I am in such distress over this same issue. I had a TT in 2008. Severe vomiting caused me to tear out all the internal insisions. A year later when I was opened up that was what was revealed. I had another in 2009. I have a very uncomfortable hard buldge, that sometimes interferes with my catching my breath. It it still mostly numb in the skin. Sometimes it feels like I am going to burst open. I had a cat scan, which showed no fluid retention. I heard all the common answers. It's fat, ( fat doesn't hurt), it's muscle spasms(can't take valium during the day) give it another year (that's almost here). Is there anybody out there who has a real explaination!!! Thanks L

I also have a bulge but in both the lower and upper abdomen. I'm eight months post-surgery and still feel very tight. I am thin and was in good shape prior to surgery (exercised plenty to get ready for it), just had LOTS of loose skin following three pregnancies (two of them, C-sections). My opinion is that the doc pulled my muslces TOO TIGHT! I read one doctor say pulling the muscles too tight could cause a bulge, or excess fat could cause a bulge. Here is another explanation I found:
"Residual abdominal bulge ... After pregnancy, the muscle do not retract back to the “normal” position they held prior to pregnancy. As with roman columns which have no strength if they are curved to one side, the abdominal muscle, which usually run straight up and down, are just not as powerful as prior to pregnancy due to their now curved anatomy. This weakness causes the abdominal contents to bulge outward giving the appearance of a persistent pregnancy."
Again, I could find no solution or suggestions for a remedy. So what are we supposed to do? Look persistently pregnant???

I also have the same problem on the upper abdomen. I had a tummy tuck 7 years ago and 2 years ago i had lipo suction due to being un happy with my upper abdomen. the first week of the lipo suction it was great but as i healed my problem is still there and i have consulted my surgeon but all she says is to keep a balance diet and to execise. I excercise every day and do abdominal work out as well. Nothing seems to work and it makes me feel so unconfortable when i want to wear that perfect tight dress. I have not gained or lost any weight but i think with the treatments done you sould see the results i was looking for. I will keep researching what will be the best way to get rid of that upper abdomen problem. if any one knows of a way to get rid of it please post it.

when i asked my surgeon to give me details on how he performs the surgery before i had my TT, i understood the impact of why they really want you as close to your ideal weight before the surgery (i wasn't, my bmi was >30)
whatever fat is attached to the skin that's left (usually the stuff just above your belly button) that's pulled down to your bikini line and stitched, CANNOT BE REMOVED during surgery (unlike the lipo on your flanks they can do). this is because the skin needs to adhere to your tummy and if they cut off or lipo the fat there wouldn't be an adequate blood supply for both healing and to ensure the thin layer of skin survives.
therefore, whatever fat is on there (and i had quite a bit), is still on there after surgery. and, well, if you tend to accumulate fat around the middle...... the upper part of your tummy has "more" fat cells left than the stretched out lower part.
From what i would guess, if its stubbornly staying there after exercise/diet. the easiest way to get rid of it is to just lipo it off if its bothering you.
as for me, i kinda just added the TT on because i had medically necessary breast reduction and didn't want to have a huge santa tummy afterwards, so i paid for the TT. it looks good, but i'm no means one of the "after" pictures. happy to have made it through the ordeal, but my tummy still has a layer of fat on it (abs are nice and tight though) and my upper abdominal area carries more subcutaneous fat than the lower part like many of the posters here

I had a tummy tuck about seven years ago and started noticing the upper tummy bulge a few years ago. It is incredibly irritating and people stare at it. I dress professionally and it drives me crazy to have this and have people stare at it. I got liposuction on the area six months ago but didn't notice much change at all. I also recently went through painful lipodissolve on the area, and still haven't noticed much difference. It drives me crazy. The only thing that I have found that seems to help is doing a very intense exercise program called p90x. I've noticed that it gets a little flatter when I do this regularly. It's good to be able to relate with others who have had the same problem too, makes me feel not so alone.

I had a tummy tuck 9 weeks ago. My upper belly is protruding and when I bend down you can definitely tell that there is quite a bit of fat left above the belly button. I know I didn't gain any weight and most of the swelling is gone. So it truly is fat above the belly button. I asked my surgeon about this and his reply was: If your surgery was performed by a qualified surgeon, the procedure in a full tummy tuck is not to disturb the tissue above the belly button. The reason for this is that the blood flow to the bottom of your belly comes from the top of the belly. And if the tissue above the belly button is disturbed then you would loose blood circulation in the bottom portion of the belly and your newly attached skin will die. Then you would have a very serious complication of skin lose. So, the tummy tuck really is a two step process, you are supposed to come back when you are completely healed, my surgeon suggested 3 month after original surgery, and get a lyposuction of the remaining fat in the upper belly. Most surgeons of couse don't want you to know that, since they don't want another follow up lyposuction, since they'll have to do that for free - since you have already paid to take care of the complete stomach fat when you paid for tummy tuck.

I know this is an old thread -- but I am in the same situation. After losing 165 lbs, I had an abdominoplasty in January 2008. There were complications including bleeding (fixed by return to surgery) then a huge seroma requiring drains for 26 weeks, and a belly button that leaked and didn't heal. February 2009, my plastic surgeon went back in to remove the belly button and clean out some of the necrosis....all went well...EXCEPT -- within 2-3 weeks I had a large football-shaped protrusion on the upper right side of my abdome. 2 years 3 months later, I have gained 40-50 lbs from pre-abdominoplasty -- and have gained 14 inches around my waist. The curvature is so severe that I cannot even keep underwear or pants up without wearing my surgical binder for it to "grab" onto. There are no stores that make clothes for a humpty-dumpty shape. This has been horribly distressing both mentally and physically. My gastric bypass surgeon finally ordered both endoscope and colonoscopy to look for any problems there....NONE. He also went in laparoscopically to make sure there was nothing wrong. So now I'm back at square one -- and I simply don't know if I can continue to live with this. Most doctors just look at me and say "hmmm I don't know".

WOW. I can't believe so many people have the same problem. I had my tummy tuck (full) a little over a year ago. They also did some lipo suction at the same time....around my back & hips. I LOVED it for the next few months. But soon I noticed my stomach seemed fuller & harder. I walk or ride my bike 3-4 times a week...no difference. I'm numb all around my belly button too. I haven't read where anyone has been told a solution that was any different. But has anyone tried body wraps? I'm thinking of doing that. Exercise - at least for me - just seems to make my stomach bigger and harder. I'm 122 lbs and have thin legs. I'm 56 yrs old. So I don't want to lose too much weight, it makes you look older. (HA - need to plump out those wrinkles!)

This is a letter I sent to my plastic surgeon (I also sent him links to
this site, so maybe he can help everyone on here):
Dear Dr.,
I am kind of
happy to find this forum because I’m not so alone, but it’s making me very
depressed, because so many people have the same exact thing as me, and I don’t
see anyone getting any help for it. Here are links where 87 people reported
similar or exact conditions as me. This is just from one website. This seems to
be a pretty common complication following tummy tucks. Is there a name for this?
Is there anything that can be done to fix it? All the people on that website are
wondering what is wrong with them, and nobody has any answers for them. If the
same exact thing happens to all these people, doesn’t someone out there know
what it is by now? I have upper belly bloating/distention/hardness after I eat,
and this usually gets worse as the day goes on. I also have GERD, Hiatal hernia,
gastroparesis, umbilical hernia, and I don’t know if my herniated L5-S1 disk
that I had surgery for, and my diverticula are a result of the compression in my
abdomen as well. But the most troubling problem I have is the shortness of
breath, and inability to get a deep breath, especially after eating. I am not
overweight anymore, but the symptoms haven’t resolved. I am afraid to eat, and I
thought if I put the effort in to lose weight, I would get better. I weigh 145
pounds at 5’6” which is 10 pounds less now than I did on my surgery date.
Another patient only weighs 100 pounds, so this problem isn’t caused
by weight. I also thought the suture removal would resolve everything, but I am
concerned there are a few sutures remaining in my lower abdomen, because
everything is still pushed upward. I am afraid to get pregnant because I can’t
breathe as it is, and I am scared for my health, and the health of the baby. Is
there some sort of expander that could be used to stretch my stomach out? I have
read a few things about doctors doing that to release the intra-abdominal
pressure. I feel like I went from young to old overnight. I have diseases that
normally only happen to people older than 50. And I got them all the day I woke
up from surgery. I can not take prilosec every day for the rest of my life
because it is not a long term medication. Plus I would rather fix the problem
than treat the symptoms. I don’t see the point in getting a Nissen
Fundoplication if the pressure from my lower abdomen is just going to push my
stomach back up into my diaphragm. I also don’t see the point in repairing my 3
hernias when there there will still be pressure that will cause them to herniate
again. You have been doing this for over 30 years and you are board
certified. Is it possible for you to suggest a name for this condition to the
Board, and a solution to fix it, or even just to tell them that this condition
exists so they can do something about it? And maybe make some sort of
recommendations to try to prevent this from happening in the first place? I
mean, it seems like common sense to me, right after a tightening procedure,
everything is too tight, so it needs to be untightened. If I buy a size 0
wedding dress, and I squeeze my size 6 body into it, I will not be able to eat
very much, and my lungs and breathing will be restricted. I do not know why so
many doctors are acting like they have no clue what this is when its pretty
straight forward to me, and to all the other patients that have it. If
I figured it out, I’m sure a doctor has too. I understand they
don’t want the liability, but most of us just want to get back to normal. If
this complication could be prevented in the first place, they wouldn’t have to
worry about any liability, because it wouldn’t happen anymore. All 87 patients,
and probably thousands more, are worried, and wondering what is wrong with them.
How can they get better if every doctor they visit has no clue what is wrong and
has no diagnosis for them. They seem to feel like maybe they have some rare
disorder that nobody else in the world has ever had, and no doctor will be able
to fix them, and they probably start to get discouraged from going to any other
doctors. On this forum, I have seen doctors blame the patient and anything else
they can blame, and I’m starting to think that they want patients to feel
hopeless so the patient will go away. Or to make patients feel like it is in
their head, when it is such a relief for all of us to find this forum, and see
that we are not alone, and it is not in our head, or caused by weight or
smoking. They say to lose weight, how can someone who can’t breathe lose weight?
They won’t prescribe any weight loss pills to help me lose weight even though
gaining weight could kill me because of the pressure. I really need a gastric
bypass because I am terrified to eat because I’m worried about gaining fat
inside my abdominal cavity. I have also been to 2 sleep studies where the doctor
told me I’m borderline narcoleptic, but he wouldn’t prescribe adderall for me,
even though he prescribes it for all his other patients with narcolepsy. I can’t
even make it through a day without needing a nap. And it’s sad, but my “naps”
are like 5 hours. I get really tired everytime I eat for some reason. I had a
job, but I lost it because I can not be productive and alert throughout a
whole shift. Or I would be too tired and have to call in, or have various doctor
appts, surgeries, etc... I would not have made countless trips to the ER, and to
the lung specialist, the gastroenterologist specialists, the orthopedic surgeon,
and gone through painful tests like endoscopy, getting the tummy tuck sutures
removed, back surgery, getting needles stuck in my back and in my leg due to
sciatica from a herniated disk, and bought expensive medicine, and paid
expensive doctor bills unless I really wanted answers and solutions to a very
real problem. I haven’t even been able to hold down a job, much less move
forward in my career because I put my life on hold for another surgery or
another test that’s a waste of time, and doesn’t work. My life has been on hold
for 4 years, and I’m just existing. My marriage, and my relationship with my son
have suffered. I have been such a burden on them with all my medical problems,
and my inability to be the energetic 32 year old that I should be for them. They
have had to take on some of my share of the responsibilities because I’m tired,
or because I can’t breathe, and it isn’t fair to them. I have to look my son in
the eyes and tell him we can’t go to the amusement park, or anywhere else
requiring walking, because I can’t breathe. And I have slow stomach emptying,
which means I eat at different times than my family, and I’m tired all the time,
so we sleep at different times also. I feel like I’m not a part of my own family
anymore. And I feel like it is my fault for being so vain, and wanting to change
my stomach to have some confidence and feel pretty for my husband, because he
deserves it. And all he got was a wife who is more self conscious, irritable,
depressed, and who has a bunch of medical problems that he has to deal with. And
all the financial burden is on him because I am pretty much useless. He has to
work overtime and he never gets anything for himself because there is only
enough money to pay bills. And he never complains about taking care of me and my
son from a prior marriage, and never throws it in my face that I am deformed
now, and that nobody would ever want me besides him. If he even does want me
anymore. I wouldn’t want to be with me if I was him. I have also become insanely
jealous, because I feel anyone would be a more fun wife than I am, and just
about everyone looks better than I do. I used to be so healthy before this
surgery that I didn’t even buy health insurance because I never went to the
doctor. I feel as if I bait and switched my husband. He married a happy,
spontaneous, energetic girl that had a good job, and who had goals in life,
and looked pretty good besides having stretch marks from my 9 pound baby. And
he ended up with a wife that is exactly the opposite of what he signed up
for. It has been so depressing to go from healthy and attractive, to sick and
deformed overnight. It’s been hard to face my new reality, and harder for me to
accept it. It’s been a hard adjustment period, and I still am in denial, and I
want to be my old self again. My husband wants to have a baby, and I want to
give him his first child, but I am too sick to even do that for him. I need a
solution so I can move on with my life and have a baby while I am still young
enough to do so. Please, I really need help, and I don’t want to waste time
with doctors unless they give me a real diagnosis, and a treatment plan to
actually fix this problem. I would even get breast implants placed in my stomach
to stretch my stomach out if that’s what I have to do. I will do whatever it
takes, as long as it works, because I really want to be happy again. I don’t
want to play the blame game or be vindictive. I have not acted that way towards
you in 4 years. This complication doesn’t happen to every patient, but it did
happen to me, and I want to figure it out and fix it, so I can move on. I
just need your help to fix this. I have insurance, but some people posted that
insurance won’t cover “cosmetic” procedures, and I do not have money to pay
for any procedures that are not covered. I do know that I need some sort of
extender, then hernia repair. I have also read a post on here that said that a
tummy tuck is a two part procedure, and their doctor did lipo on the upper
abdomen, to get rid of the upper belly bulge. That might create a little more
room and decrease pressure on the hiatal hernia. Hopefully we can find some sort
of solution to this, and help others that are going through the same
thing.

I had my abdomino about 5 years ago. My upper abs are distended too, but I can feel that it is fat. Fat that was not there before and will now not go away.

I had mine 5 years ago. I also have the upper bulge,IBS,Hypertension and Irregular heart beat. I feel that its all coming from this procedure. None of these problems run in our family and I was very healthy before all of this. I am noe on more medication than my 80 year old parents! Future is not looking good for us girls! Lets face it, the Doctors will never say that is what caused it. Look at the money they would lose. Sure wish I had never had the procedure!

I am having the same issues as everyone here only I didn't know there were so many of us experiencing this...I always feel bloated and my tummy is hard and balloon like around my belly button...I look pregnant!! I did gain weight a few years after my surgery but thought this would go away after I lost the weight, by the looks of it, that's not going to happen...its been almost 6 years since my tt...I had twins so my tummy was really bad...vertical scar from c-section...excess skin, honestly it looked like I had a pair of butt cheeks stuck to my stomach...I wont say that I am 100% satisfied with how my tummy looks after I spent all that money, but it does look better than before...of course bikini's are out and even with a girdle I still look preggers...after reading all of your posts I know now that there is no fix for this so I will try to be happy with how I look...and for those of you who are thinking of having it done, think about it...does your tummy really look that bad? It may look worse after your tummy tuck :/

I too, am glad to hear others having the same problem as I do. I had one of the best surgeons in Hollywood, It was done for a TV show, but the need to be very careful on a diet and exercise was not stressed. I don't really blame them, I should have known. But now that I live with the bulge, and in a small town that knew the experience I went thru. Making me feel like I failed or wasted a perfectly good oppurtunity. I have tried losing again. I got 8 lbs off but after that, nothing. I would like to know if something can be done!!
