I had a bilateral ureteric reimplantation when i was 2, it was highly effective until around the age of 15-16 since then i have had recurrent utis and even symptoms with no actual infection with long periods of discomfort frequency and bladder spasms. I am now 22 and have seen a specialist four times and they only keep feeding me antibiotics which do not solve the problem. I cannot imagine the rest of my life suffering from this.

I am a 17 year old male who's had this done while I was a toddler. I would like to say after a little while of back and forth with my potty training, now im perfectly fine and the surgery has done wonders throughout my life. it wasn't a pleasant experience to hear about but it does wonders. the medical advances today have definitely helped me.

Hi,
Thank you for your post, it helped ease my fears. How is your daughter doing? Did Dr Duel do the surgery?

I had this surgery at 10. I had symptoms at 2 but I wasn't healthy enough for surgery. I'm 36, during my marriage to my ex husband we tried unsuccessfully to get pregnant and now again wth my fiancé of 7 years we have zero success. I have horrible pain during periods and am miserable 2 weeks every single month and suspect endometriosis caused by having this surgery.

Our 21 month old boy had this surgery five days ago. He was in a lot of pain the first four days after surgery. That has improved but all that blood in the urine. It has not. I'm glad he has a doctor appointment in five days.

How is your daughter now? My son had double reimplantation 4 years ago due to severe hydronephrosis. Even with surgery he still has kidney reflux. This year he had to have another surgery on his bladder because he developed a diverticulum on it that was collecting urine and causing severe UTI's. He is 6 months post op and is having major difficulties urinating, he strains really hard to get it out and has been wetting his pants constantly. It seems as though he does not even feel that he has to go. He is going to Cornell is NYC in 2 weeks for video urodynamics on his bladder. I am so worried, upset and frustrated for him. He is 5 and has had so many procedures done. His urologist is a very sought after Dr and even he is stumped.

I am 16 and I had a Bilateral Ureteral Reimplantation. Since I was 3 I would get about 5-6 kidney infections a year. I went to many doctors and they said it was normal and told me to just drink more water. When I was 15 I was having kidney pain everyday. Turns out both of my kidneys are FULL of scar tissue from how many infections I had during my childhood. So we talked to a different urologist about it and he scheduled my surgery.
The surgery took a lot longer than expected because I’m diabetic so I lost a lot more blood than most people do during the surgery. After they transferred me to my room I was kept on a strict schedule of medications. I was given a catheter and was told I would have to have it for about 2 weeks. I stayed in the hospital for only 3 days after my surgery and was kept on a clear liquid diet for about a week. I however got out of the hospital on Easter Sunday (2017) and had no way to get my prescriptions filled. I did okay for the rest of the evening but at about 2 in the morning I woke up to excruciating pain and I couldn’t even begin to move. It was honestly breathtaking. My mom had to drive me all the way back to the city where I had my surgery (hour and a half drive) the bladder spasms come in waves.. they’d slowly start coming on and then slowly go away, they each lasted about 5-10 minutes. Not to get too graphic but it almost feels like someone is putting a hot knife in your urethra. I got back to the hospital that morning and they kept me there for another about 5 days or so. When I got there they tried multiple medications to get them to go away, morphine, dalodin, and finally Valium they were giving me a small dose of Valium very hour and a half. It was working to keep my pain down. They did a scan on my ureters and found that one of my kidney draining tubes had fallen out of my kidney and got coiled up in my bladder. They had to take it out immediately. I kept my other one in for another week, I got my catheter out a week early because it was causing me pain. My urine was red/pink for a full two weeks, and I had to pee about every 10-15 minutes (no joke) I slept with a puppy pad underneath me because I was also afraid on wetting the bed.
I know it sounds insane but I am so happy I had this surgery, I still get about 2 kidney infections every year, however that’s due to how damaged my kidneys are. The quicker you catch your reflux the better. The scar has faded a lot in just one year.
I recommend the surgery but stay on top of your medication so you don’t get a bladder spasm cause once they start, they’re hard to stop.
