Hi there everyone...
I experienced this too..Am 37 mom of a 10 year old... I have been exercising regularly for atleast 6-7 years.. I do cardio mainly 5-6 days a week. Last month, on day 7 of my period when everything was completely over and hunky dory...I went gymming and started on a different exrcise routine. A strenuous one with a personal trainer to work off some inches. I started bleeding a little. I didnt care much then, did the same routine next couple of days again and my bleeding started again!.. And on day 10, I had severe cramping and passed clots!!.. This has never ever happened before. freaked me out. I went to my gnyec and did an ultra sound and also a trans (internal scan). everything good no problems. Have been diagnosed with a harmonal imbalance which is supposed to kick in from 35+ yrs of age. Am alright now but am really scared of exercising again..Am on orgamed for this cycle and next 2-3 cycles to get me up on the good hormone -progesterone and balance out the bad one-estrogen.
But I still dont know what triggered this off and why just now?? Maybe its stress caused by over exercise?? Thats what my mom seems to think anayways. But feel comforted to know that there are quite a few ladies out here with a similar problem.

I run on a regular basis and on several occations during a normal run where I push myself I've experienced severe pain in my pelvic/uteris area. Its random, I can't predict that the pain is coming, so I can't stop running before I feel the pain. One time it was so bad I just layed on the floor fetal position crying. The pain goes away after a few minutes. Now I also have noticed some blood along with discharge right after I run and even hours after this. I've been to two different doctors and had pap smears and an ultrasound done. Except for my uteris being introverted everything was normal. The doctors can't explain it and just think that I just worked out too hard or that it was just pms which I don't agree with because it doesn't just happen before I menstruate. Maybe it is normal, but it is scary and baffling.

Hi! I'm 20 years old, never had sex, and used to exercise constantly in high school. Last year I had this problem, but assumed it was my body cleaning itself out since I had read somewhere that that was a possibility, but started drinking Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. I drank the vinegar to help control my mood swings during that time of the month. While drinking the vinegar, the bleeding during exercise stopped as well.
Lately I have not been drinking the vinegar (it just doesn't taste good and is a pain to drink). I have been exercising the past week or so, but two days ago I really stepped it up and did a lot more than normal. All day today, I have been bleeding lightly. During my exercise session today, I bled a whole bunch :(. It's not anywhere near time for my period either.
I'm going to try to go back on the vinegar since my mood swings have been coming back as well. The vinegar naturally balances your hormones and has zero side effects!
Here's what you do.
1 TBS Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, 8 oz water, 1 TBS of Honey once a day
I'm hoping it will stop my bleeding. Also, good luck everyone!

I'm so happy I found this thread! I'm younger than 16, and around the mid cycle, no joke, I get HEAVY spotting. I noticed minor spotting 5monthsago, and each month it getsworse with my exercise. This month it was terrible! I leaked! Te blood is brown. I also noticed myperiods have become 1 day longer and are quite lighter.

I have gone through this for about a year and a half. For a long time it was just very bad, curl-up-in-ball, someone is trying to twist your cervix menstrual cramps after about 10 minutes of any exercise. I went to the Dr. and she found nothing wrong, even with an ultrasound. About 3 months ago, I also started spotting a little in addition to the cramps - went to the Dr. again, still nothing. I was so frustrated because I'm really trying to get into a steady workout routine and the cramps make it hard to even move much less run.
I did some research and found some info that had to do with hormone imbalances and prostaglandins (the chemical that regulates cramping). It seemed as if Magnesium and Fish Oil supplements might help - and that a deficiency could be the cause. I was skeptical but desperate. I started taking both supplements about 2 weeks ago and within a few days I noticed a serious lessening of the symptoms. Sometimes the cramps don't even come at all (when they ALWAYS used to). And sometimes they come in a much milder form and subside much sooner - it's almost bearable to exercise right through them, or at least just walk through them. I have no idea whether it's the magnesium or the fish oil or both, but if you are suffering from this and can't find an answer, please try this!

Hi everyone,
I haven't quite read everyone's posts but simply I get the same symptoms when I exercise: intense cramping like pms (but far worse) and bleeding after running. I'm 23, I have been on and off BC for 2 years. After trying 7 or so pills I couldn't find the right one so I have been off it for 7 months now. Also, I probably should mention that I'm an elite sprinter who has run internationally so I often have track sessions which cause me to bleed.
MOST Gyno's and Dr's have been clueless. Not much help. I have no history of STD's, I do not have Poly cystic ovaries, my pap smears are clear and the only offer I have been given is that I may have endometriosis.
So here's my take:
-It may be genetic as the same thing has happened to my Mum and her sisters.
-Intense lactic running sessions induce bleeding and cramping
-my gyno said: "It is common for people who have gone off the pill, to experience bleeding after exercise due to hormone imbalances"
-my biology lecture told me a story: she was out hiking with her partner and he had an allergic reaction to something. And has a result she had to get help. In her frightened/shocked state she ran for help, managed to save her partner and after the whole her ordeal she bled (menstruated). Her theory is after periods of great shock the female body bleeds because well, having kids under stressful conditions are no longer ideal. LONG story short, maybe its natures way of survival? VERY out-there I know.
So you're probably wondering how I even train? I found that Naproxen derived tablets taken an hour before intense exercise stops me from bleeding an cramping. NO pain what so ever. I use 2 tablets of Naprofem before training. It does give me a funny tummy though.
Apparently that type of anti-inflammatory medication is great for our problem (or that's what my gyno said). MAKE SURE YOU CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR- THESE DRUGS DO HAVE A LIST OF SIDE AFFECTS. I haven't experienced them though
The fitter I have got, the less I take the tablets or need them. Also I am still trying to find an answer as prevention is better than cure. Good Luck everyone.

Just figured I'd join the herd and say I've experienced similar issues. Symptoms: bleeding and bloating associated with exercise. 24 years old, healthy plant based diet, never pregnant, no birth control or other drugs, tested clear of STDs, thyroid levels normal, blood test normal etc etc. Only thing Doc could say after I told her my story, "well, maybe it was just a coincidence." I started exercising in may of 2012. Just doing 15-20 mins of cardio on a stationary bike and a 6 minute routine that mostly targeted legs and abs. I started while on my period, and noticed light bleeding for a few days following my period. I stopped exercising for five days while on a trip and did not bleed. When I came back, on my second day of exercise I decided to take a jog rather than use the stationary bike. Afterward I noticed discomfort and cramping throughout my pelvic region and thighs. It was strong enough that I had to take a few ibuprofen to ease the discomfort. Later that day the bleeding returned and this time it was heavier. I stopped exercising but the bleeding continued for at least a week, maybe longer. Only recently (Jan 2013), after seeing an OBGYN (and getting no answers) did I start slowly introducing exercise again. I've only been doing about 15-20 minutes of light cardio on the stationary bike most days. The bleeding is hardly detectable, but my period ended days ago and I'm still detecting blood. The worst part though is the bloating! Most of ya'll didn't mention bloating, but when I exercise, I am ALWAYS bloated. I've been bloated ever since I started. At first I thought it was how I was eating. After 2 weeks, and a period later, it finally occurred to me that it's likely the cardio causing it. When I first began exercising in May, the bloating was also present. I want to exercise, even if it is just light cardio. The bleeding is hardly noticeable, and if it remains as such, I don't mind. I feel so much better on days that I ride the stationary bike. However, the bloating defeats half the purpose of exercising! I want to feel energetic, but also look good too. I feel so fat and uncomfortable. I have thought for years that I may have a hormonal imbalance, as did my ex of 5 years who works in the medical field. Based on all of the above, I'm going to try some herbal remedies, like taking chaste berry as mentioned by another commenter.

Thank god to this post for putting my mind at rest! I'm 27, not currently sexually active and on the birth control implant so I haven't had a period in over two years now.
I went hiking up a mountain a few days ago and there was a part where I had to scrabble over some rocks...I lost my footing and ended up with my legs a lot wider apart than I intended, and I could definitely feel some weird internal muscle twinge. After that I've had some fairly light spotting, no cramps or anything to go with it tho.
I guess because it's been so long since I've had any periods I was getting a bit worried....but I think I must have just injured myself a little internally and hopefully it will stop in a few more days....I don't want to go to a doctor or anything about it, I have to travel abroad soon so I don't really have time....anyways, thanks to this post I feel a lot better about everything.

I am a 38 (going on 39) year-old mother of two. I was always physically active before and during my pregnancies (my kids are now 10 & 7), and never had an issue with bleeding, other than my normal monthly periods. I moved in 2011 and my periods got rather strange, but my OBGYN and I chalked it up to the stress from moving. Early in 2012 I began running and doing a 30-minute cardio work-out about 4-days/week. Since then, I've had the spotting on & off (usually from mid-cycle through the first day of my period). I have not been too alarmed about it because I have some girlfriends who've had similar issues, but it has put a damper on my sex life since I only have about 2-weeks/month where I'm not bleeding or spotting. I am currently not on any birth control (my hubby took care of that! :-)) I have an appt. w/my OBGYN in April...hoping to get some answers because I've about had it w/the on & off spotting & light bleeding!! I'm glad to hear I'm not alone and that others have or have been having this same issue!!!!!!!!! %-)
