i noticed the spotting right around the time of ovulation and after strenous exersize. I think its the combo of ovulation and excersize especially for me i dont go to the gym regularly so when i do and Im also ovulating the spotting occurs.....no pain though.

I also have this problem and I think it's something to do with a lot of movement in the pelvic area as much as any hormonal change -- I bike and walk everywhere, several miles a day and have spotting around ovulation. I am so happy to see others with this question! I wouldn't give up the exercise though.

I thought something was wrong with me. %-) I never heard of anyone mentioning this before and I work with a lot of "women" health nuts. I have recently started working out...well for about a month. When I worked out on a stair climber, I didn't have the bleeding, but as soon as I got on the treadmill I had cramps followed by a day or two of bleeding. :$ I am trying to get pregnant and this happened during my ovulation. I don't know if I should keep working out or just stop, but I do know that I am trying to loose weight to have a healthy pregnancy.
Any ideas?

I ended up here for the obvious reason that I'm experiencing the same thing... just started in the past 3-4 months. The first time it happened was during (noticed after) my first half-marathon in January. That month I had horribly moody PMS, which has usually been mild. My daughter started her period for the first time that same month, so I thought it had something to do with that. But for the 3 months since then I've been early with my period, spotty when I run and on the moody side. I'm going to be 42 soon and NO chance of being pregnant. Aside from my daughter's cycle influence, I also thought maybe peri-menopause, but the doctor said not yet. Oddly enough, the chiropractor has been more help than my doctor. He gave me a supplement to try called Estro Factor. What a difference! I didn't think it was connected, but I've started sleeping better too. He explained how hormones fluctuate on a cycle... which is common knowledge, however when you introduce stress or diet changes the imbalance can be dramatic and wreak havoc. when one level spikes another one tries to compensate but by the time that happens, the other one may be settling - so you get "currents" or surges of various hormones. The last thing he mentioned was that the range for levels that doctors use is not accurate for everyone if the "normal" range for a particular hormone level is between 3 and 10 and you "score" a 4, you are likely low because by the time it registers on the panel screen, the actual levels in your blood are different. Anyway - get a hormone panel done and question the results if they don't find anything else. Good luck!

Wow! Like everyone else, I'm really glad I found this post. I'm in my twenties and very, very active, I am in the gym 6 days a week and training for a bodybuilding show. I don't do a lot of cardio and stick to mainly weight lifting. I haven't worked my lower abs in a while and yesterday did some really strenuous lower abdominal exercises that actually worked my inner thighs a ton too - when I got home, I had bright red spotting and it's been going on all day today. I even feel a little crampy like I am on my period. I'm almost considering wearing a tampon. This happened to me 2 years ago when I was training for a show but it was much lighter and only lasted for about a few hours. By the way, I am on birth control so I am usually very regular. Does anyone know if working out can rupture, tear, or damage your uterine lining or why this would happen?

But listening to all these girls who are suffering with the same thing definately makes me feel better. Thankyou all !!!! (Was told by the hospital its just one of those things, and I will need to try and live with it? :$

Hi thank goodness I found this forum as I have been so worried. I have been going to the gym for 6 years now but just recently have started to do Spin classes which are quite hectic and full on. A couple of weeks ago I have bad stomach cramps half way through the class and then had spotting after - and again the next day although I hadn't exercised then.
I went for a run this week and the same thing happened - I am booked for a scan next week but have been worrying about whats going on....

This is the first time it happened to me... I've been doing strenuous exercise for about 5 weeks now. Today while I was struggling with side push-ups, I felt my panties get wet, like my bladder let go. I checked (I was exercising at home) and I had a lot of blood... (in the three days before it was clear liquid, so I thought it was my bladder, or just sweat). I have been on the pill for more than 5 years now because of very heavy and painful periods (the pills help A LOT). So hormonal imbalance can't be it I think.
Now I'm not sure if I should even go to the doctor because they don't seem very helpful for others in this situation.

I am 45 years old. I am on the pill for years now. My period is regular except for one instance last year when I bled mid cycle. It was attributed to hormonal change due to sudden weight loss. I joined a weight loss program, lost 5 to 8 pounds in about 3 weeks (not really drastic but I guess drastic for my body), from 133 lbs to 123-125 lbs. About less than a month ago, after not exercising at all since March 2009, I joined a circuit-training gym, exercised for 30-minutes for a total of 9 days within 3 wk period, did not experience spotting. Never done Yoga, never done Pilates. This week, I started 45-50 minute yoga class on Monday, then did the circuit training for 30 min on Tuesday. Wednesday morning, had a smear of dark brown blood, did not really increase to anything alarming. Thursday morning, nothing when I got up. I started with my first session of 45-50 minute Pilates. Nothing until late afternoon, there was a tinge of dark brown again, no alarming increase within the night. Mid-morning today, it is more than a tinge and a smear. Based on some of the comments, it must have something to do with the sudden change in activity. Though I have already been doing the circuit for almost 4 weeks prior to the start of the Yoga and Pilates, I am assuming that my body was not use to the abdominal pressure and flexibility exercises (basic beginners) plus of course, my body being on the perimenopausal stage. BTW, I do not experience cramps or pain. I am also on my 2nd week of active pills so, might also be one of those midcycle stuff. I will give myself 3 weeks and if it does not go away, I will have to see my doctor.

The same thing has been happening to me for the past year, and again tonight when I got home from my jog. The amount of blood varies and can range between bright red to darker shades of brown. I have had two ultrasounds, and nothing. My doctor thought it could be a cyst, but that was ruled out.
In addition, I have been getting blood clots larger then before during menstruation, and the cramping that occurs after exercise is similar to that during my period. - I made that association tonight.
I was curious, has anyone that has posted had children?

Thank goodness!!!!!! My gyn - a woman - tells me it is no big deal, and shrugs it off. I had an ultrasound and pap, and they found nothing. Obviously, this is much more common than these doctors know. With me, it tends to happen more often if I am doing things with more impact: jumping jacks, hop overs, running, etc. It can happen, though, when I use an elliptical machine as well. Perhaps some of us feel embarrassed about this? I'm going to check around my gym to see if any of the women there have conquered this.

im 19 years old, no children, no pregnancies. i find that when i work out really hard, like fast running or anything my body is not used to this happens to me. i run for 30 minutes and find myself with horrible cramping. worse then my normal menstrual cramping. today it was so bad that i couldnt move afterwards. and immediately following i bleed for 1-2 days. its bright red with clear glossy mucus. went to doctors numerous times and they have been telling me its normal and my body is just reacting because my lack of exercise. but even when im consistent with my exercising nothing will take it away. i've had friends and family tell me this could be ovarian cysts. could this be? beats me. im tired of going to the doctor and paying 20 dollars copays to get no answers.

Wow, glad to see this topic. I just started exercising again after a long period (7 years at least) of not doing any formal exercise (although I remained fairly active just from taking care of the kids)...I've had 3 kids in the past 7 years, the youngest is now 3. I started doing cardio and strength exercises this month and 3 days ago started spotting. I thought it had something to do with ovulation as I am mid-cycle right now. Hmm, will definitely have it checked out w/ the dr. but definitely seems to be a connection with exercise. Wondering if it's hormones being affected by exercise. Or if like someone else said, the increased blood flow to the pelvic region causes break through bleeding?
Thanks everyone for posting, definitely makes me feel a little better about this.
