I am happy to see that i am not the only one with this weird problem.
Originally, I was told that polyps might be the cause of the bleeding. The cervical polyps were removed and I still experience bleeding when I exercise intensely running, or biking. My doctor did not have an explanation.
I have NOT had children. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I do not take BC.
I am wondering if I clench my stomach and abdominal muscles hard when I exercise with intensity, would that cause irritation to the cervix, causing bleeding.
After sex, exercise the next day causes discomfort. Sometimes bleeding.
Also, I notice that the bleeding is not always there after an intense workout.

I have been looking all over the medical websites for an answer. I am so glad I found this site. I am 35yrs old, no pregnancies, not on BC. I am a runner and log about 20-30 miles a week. I have been bleeding after heavy exercise for about 5 years now. No abnormal PAP's and I had an ultrasound to check for polyps or cysts, none found. No doctors seem curious or anything. I'm going to try the hormone therapy.

I have the same problem!! Spotting started about a week ago. I was sure that it was related to intense cardio esp. when I jump on my spinner bike. It was when I first noticed it. I thought maybe the seat was pressing up too much against me or causing undue friction. I decided to cut that out and to only focus on my treadmill. I didn't spot. However, I took a 30 min. power walk the other day and I spotted again! I have done intense cardio on and off throughout my life and have never experienced anything like this before. I am 29 years old. The only thing that I have changed is that I have started taking St. John's Wort about 2 weeks ago for depression/anxiety. I am wondering if that is related to my spotting. I will try cutting that out. Cutting out exercise is not an option right now since I want to lose the last 10 lbs. I have only recently started to get back into exercise after a 3 year hiatus. In the past 2 weeks, I have lost 10 lbs. as my body reacts very well to exercise. Maybe I lost too much weight too quick?? I just want this to end. I also don't want to wear a pantyliner 24/7 :-(

I am having the same issues! im 20, a virgin, have done ultra sounds, blood tests, everything is apparantly okay. i bleed after running on the treadmill for 20 minutes. i DID have a theory that my doctor disregarded, could it be that running is not so good for the uterus? because i know that when you bleed during your period, its the uterus wall lining that you bleed out. maybe running causes too much movement in the uterus and tears at the lining, thus we get cramp like pains and then bleed a little.

The same thing happens to me during my mid cycle. Today I went to the gym and did cardio for 30 min. I discovered a huge amount of blood after. Its happens all the time during my mid cycle. The other day I felt my left ovary beating or pumping, I know it was like moving inside. Weird. I will post if I'm pregnant, I had unprotected sex right after my period.

Just a thought ladies...have your thyroid hormone levels checked, because I've recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I've been having the same problem you've described for a few months. Apparently the thyroid affects a LOT, including menstration. I was having all kinds of irregularities with my cycle, and the medicine they gave me a month ago is starting to work. I have to go back in a couple of weeks to get a higher dosage, but I can tell that it's making a difference even with the lowest dose. Anyway, if you've tried everything else or if your doctor isn't sure, ask for a blood test to see what your TSH levels are. They should be between 0.3 - 2.0...anything higher or lower could be causing your troubles (including the breakthrough bleeding and feelings of fatigue). Good luck!

It's a great place to share my experience...
I seldom exercise until a few months ago when I tried to stay fit.
I'm 36 by the way, never been pregnant but want to have baby in the near future. Normally before or after the period, I can have spotting. 2 years ago I had a Hysteroscopy surgery to remove uterus polyps.
2 months ago, after running, I found some brown blood, and it got worse the 2nd day. That was about ovulation day. A month later, after playing tennis, I had severe pelvic pain. It last for a few days, and got better without taking any medicine. I went to the GP, but was dismissed in a few minutes. When I was on holiday in China, I saw a specialist, done cervical ultrasound and a quick pelvic exam. She found my uterus is not mobile enough, and possibly have Endometriosis and pelvic adhesion. Chinese gynecologists are generally very experienced. She suggested me to have another check after coming back to Australia.
I also went to see a famous doctor doing Chinese medicine. He gave me 20 packets of liquid enough for 10 days. My holiday was 1 month ago, after that, I haven't had unusual bleeding. His medicine is only for stop bleeding. I lost the prescription. Only remember they all have the same purpose - cool down the body. He asked me to visit him 2nd time after bleeding stopped. But it'll be another year for the next trip to China.
I'm going to see a specialist tomorrow. Hopefully he's good...
Guess some people here might have got polyps. When last time I had it, I often had bleeding after exercises. The ultrasound couldn't detect them unfortunately. I had two done before the surgery. None has discovered polyps. Hysteroscopy is the best way.

I am 29, single, in excellent health and shape. I have had heavy spotting twice after heavy cardio. No pain, but my menstruations are also painless. I went to see a gyno and he just said its perfectly normal after physical excercise. No tests. But I am in Canada, and they tend to underprescribe tests here (USA has the opposite problem).

I am a mother and a runner. I have been running for 20 years. I have in the past 2 years found that after a hard run I will have bright red to brown bleeding which is light and will sometimes last the day, sometimes 2 days. I also have found that after a hard weights workout the same thing happens. Also, it can happen after intercourse. I am not on the pill, however I do have a mirena. I am a midwife and spoke to and been examined by Gyneas, and their suggestion is to go on the pill to regulate the bleeding - which I will not. Another of my Gynea friends explained that the vaginal mucosa can be very vascular in some women, in which exercise can affect it. If I get any more answers I will be sure to post them. I didn't realize there are so many women having this annoying problem. I DON'T think that it is normal, and this is why i will endeavour to find an answer.

Same thing happened to me I was doing ab workout machines and when I got home I noticed I was spotting, reddish/brown. I went to the gyno and got a pap smear and she said that it was the straining of the muscles and not to worry. I left feeling a little skeptical with that answer and have not gotten a second opinion as of yet. I just get this intense lower abdominal pain and pressure that starts at and around my uterus that carries all the way up to my mid abdominal section. I have gotten some good tips from the above reading, thank you ladies!

I am glad that I found this website. The same thing has happened to me several times. Usually it's soon after a menstrual period. I will be doing a cardio workout, not particularly heavy, and then I will have some red/brownish spotting afterwards for the next couple of days. The first time, I was freaked out that I had cancer or something, but then i went in to see the OB/GYN doctor, and she said I had a normal pelvic exam and normal pap test. She said there could be several reasons for the abnormal bleeding, which some of you have mentioned: 1) sometimes women spot during ovulation, which is usually mid-cycle 2) it could be polyps 3) it could be hormonal imbalance, caused by stress or other things. She advised me to get hormone tests to start with: TSH and prolactin. We'll see how it turns out.

I have seen a ton of posts about this topic, but no real explanations, solutions, or reasons. I have been having the same problem every time I work out. I get extreme cramping in my lower abdomin to my back, followed by a few hours of spotting (almost after every workout, not just during ovulation). I was wondering if anyone know what causes this and what some possible treatments are.

I am an Ob/Gyn. This is not a rare as it might seem. When you ovulate, the estrogen decreases right before you get the LH surge. This estrogen withdrawal can lead to a little bit of vaginal spotting. The estrogen and progesterone then increase following ovulation during the luteal phase. Intense exercising can sometimes change the hormone balance in our bodies and may contribute to a more rapid drop off of estrogen(theory?). My recommendation would be to track your cycles on a calendar in addition to the episodes of spotting and see if it coincides with the time of ovulation. If you have more frequent bleeding between your periods, you should see a doctor who may want to perform an endometrial biopsy. Hope this helps.

I have been bleeding over 4-5 years now when I exercise. I am 44 years old. My OB doctor says its from ovulation. I have and always am checked every year. No problems. Thank goodness. He wants me to do a surgery for cryoablation. I really don't want to have a surgery, but I am tired of bleeding every time I workout. They say the surgery works, but not all the time. Thank goodness they have mini pads to wear. I wear them everytime I workout! What do you think I should do?
