Boy am I happy to have found you guys. I haven't worked out for a good seven years now and the last two weeks got back to my dance aerobics class. I am 52, and this coming Sept is two years without a period. Starting in March I've been having acupunture for the menopause symptoms AND was taking herbs that I stopped first week of July because of a brownish clear discharge THAT my gyno said might be due to a building of uterine lining due to some Chinese herbs. Pap, pelvic etc all "a-okay" with her.

My "brownis/clear" discharge that I've had off and on since starting the herbs (it was subsiding due to stopping them) a couple of days ago began to have a teeny tinge of red, and just in the morning is when I've had it...after a bowel movement...sorry if TMI, but ya never know who needed to hear that... o.O This afternoon, there was a bit more red looking so much like "the olden days" (beginning of a period) AND feeling like those days! Crampy!

I called my docs, all gone for the day so I have to wait until Monday. Thank God for Google and YOU! I am not as afraid. Even though I quickly remembered about...4 years or so ago when I ran our treadmill a few times after not working out for a few years, I came up and had had red spotting (I wasn't menopausal then, but PERI for sure...) I still got scared. To be honest, worry wort that I am, I won't feel totally better until I talk to my doc, which just might be a bummer cause she will set me up for tests (more days of worry).

Whew...least I am no longer panicking. I will get back here to share results since I've wondered so many times in reading your stories...what you found out. ;-)

I'm 23 with no history of pregnancy and not on birth control. I have light bleeding and heavy pelvic pain right after I run. I have a family history of endometriosis, which I believe can cause this type of spotting. It's supposed to be a rare disease (5-10% of women) and my mother had it for 35 years (literally!) before being diagnosed.
Both my mother and myself started periods at age 10, which is one of the common symptoms, as well as intense pelvic pain. Take this list of postings to your GYN so that they can see that many women do suffer these symptoms and take your health more seriously. Change doctors if you're dismissed with this problem. If your doctor cant give you a good explanation, s/he isn't a good doctor, or at least isn't being a good doctor to you.
I wish everyone well with this. For my case, endometriosis has no cure so it can only be managed, but it's still important for you to find out what's causing your problem, whether it sounds like this or not.

Wow! The last couple of months i have been experiencing the same thing, especially after intense cardio sessions. The cramps can be really painful and sometimes i'll have to stop exercising and go home. I'm 26 and came off the pill about 3 years ago, so i have never experienced unusual periods. I went to my doctor and got the same response, she hadn't heard of it before and the pap test came back negative. Has anyone been told as to why exercise causes these symtoms? I guess it would just be good to understand why the body reacts this way. Thanks to everyone for putting me mind at ease, at least I feel i'm not the only one experiencing this.

Bless you all. The same thing is happening to me. I'm 35. I just started back to high-intensity exercise two years after my c-section. It's the middle of my cycle and kickboxing=light bleeding for 24 hours. I was at the doctor this morning. She's scheduling a bunch of tests and mentioned cancer was a possibility. I was pretty upset until I read this. I'm still going to have the tests done.. but, I feel better about the possibilities. Thank you all for sharing.

Hi everyone
I have been having mid - cycle bleeding for the last 8 years or so, even before I started exercising. Since starting to exercise a couple of years ago, it has got much heavier mid cycle but there can be a light bleed or spotting at other times of the month. I have to wear a panty liner all of the time. Doctor has given me the all clear but in the last 7 months I have started to try for a baby with no success as yet so I am interested to know if anyone has conceived while experienceing this problem.
Thanks

I'm 21 and have recently started a beginners' running program with my friend, where we alternate between walking and running for 20-30 minutes, 3 times a week. It's very low-stress. Today we went out at 6:30 am and I was very thirsty but because I was late I didn't drink anything before we left. I felt okay for a while, but then on our way back my stomach started hurting a lot and I felt nauseous and extremely thirsty. We stopped by some place to get water and while I was waiting for my friend to get it for me I started collapsing. My stomach was hurting too much for me to stand back up and I had gotten so light-headed I couldn't keep my head up anymore. It was very embarrassing!

I guess someone called an ambulance, but by the time they came my friend had gotten the water and I was starting to feel at least a little bit better. They checked my vitals and let me go. Said that I was probably a little dehydrated.

I took a nap and just got up to go to the bathroom, and I'm bleeding as if I were on my period. I'm not on the pill, and have never been sexually active. I've had spotting since I was a kid, but this is as much blood as I have on days when I'm actually menstruating.

Thank you for this. I started my period when I was 9 and my mom when she was 10. I checked the Wikipedia article and my mom and I have most of those symptoms, so maybe I'll mention it to her. She also has large fibroids in her uterus.

Hello.

It might not be any help but apparently exercise is supposed to increase the blood flow in the genital area, it might be why we bleed after exercise but not so much at other times. I've also found that sex is so much more intense since taking up running! Its amazing the day after the run, and I really notice the difference if I haven't been for a run.

me too! i'm 20 yrs old and i have the same problem. i'm still a virgin so imagine my surprise when i saw spotting! it usually occurs whenever i'm working out. i had this last summer, when i was working out regularly and it scared the hell out of me. when i stopped working out, i stopped spotting. right now, i had just returned to the gym and it's back again. i'm so relieved by the fact that we all experience the same thing and most of us have one thing in common - we do extensive cardio workouts such as running. i love to run and i would hate to give it up because of this. thank you for sharing! now i know i'm not alone!

Hello,

I've been having the same problem and it just started with me. ILast Wednesday I was working out mostly with weights like: Dead Lifts, over head presses and some other things. When I was finished and i went to change i found blood on my panties. I got really scared but it stopped after a day. I haven't been to the doctors yet and I am not sure how common this is. Did i force myself too much? I am 31 and i know for sure i am not pregnant and i am not sexually active. I will make a doctor's appointment but I wanted to see what's your suggestion.. Thanks!!!

So happy to find this thread! I recently started running to get ready for a 5k race. ( haven't been running in years) I've been running every day for the last 2 weeks. Only about a mile each day because it is sooo cold outside right now. I don't keep track of my period like I should, but I'm 90% sure I shouldn't be getting it right now. The last few days a few hours after running I've been bleeding, not heavy.. just enough to notice. I can't remember having any cramps. Today when I got back from running, I noticed I had bled quite a bit. But I don't seem to be bleeding anymore. I googled it (because that is what I do with everything) and it seems like a pretty common abnormal thing which makes me feel a lot better!

I too have had this issue numerous times. Once I was put on the pill to regulate the bleeding. Back off the exercise a bit and take it slow. It is such a wonderful thing to have the internet so we don't all have to be scared. If it is the first time you have experienced it, I would see a doctor just to be sure.

Good Luck, everyone!

OMG. i'm so glad i found this thread. okay, i'm 18 going 19 this year and not been very active in the gym. I started lifting weights and running cardio about 5days ago in a bid to keep fit. I felt fine, but on the 5th day, after running my cardio workout, i noticed blood on my underwear. It is unlikely to be my menstrual period since mine ended just 7 days ago. My menstrual cycle has always been consistently taking place every 4 weeks or so.

In fact, it didn't even feel like menstrual flow. This blood is ALOT heavier than my usual menstruation and brighter red in colour. It has been flowing for the past 8hrs or so and has soaked up 2pads. It's getting me really worried and i'm going to see a doctor tomorrow, since it's rather late now. I google-ed the issue as i always do with everything else and got myself worried when most results warn of cancerous growth. Impossible that i have gotten sexual diseases since i'm still a virgin :-) but this heavy bleeding is worrying the hell out of me. cross my finger and pray it's not cancer.
