It's been a year since my hysterectomy. I'm 59. No weight gain but I've always exercised 5 times a week Feel great. It was an easy recovery.

I just had a consult with my gyno a day ago and after years of suffering from excessive bleeding during menstrual cycles, she proposed two options: Oblaytion, don't even know if i'm spelling that correctly and hysterectomy. I was floored, never thought of a hysterectomy, never! So next week i'm going in for my pelvic ultrasound to see where I am with fibroids. I was diagnosed at 16 and hospitalized with multiple fibroids but I was so young no doctor really presented what that meant. I guess If I'm loaded with them, the only option is hysterectomy. I am freaked out. Your site was helpful with uch positive feedback, however, the other sites had just as much "negative" comments. I just don't know what to think. My weight is a huge concern, yes call me vain, but I cannot afford to gain weight. Let me explain, I always had trouble putting weight on, always "too" thin by many opinions, so now I'm probably 12 lbs over what my weight should be at 47 yrs (132 lb)I am so uncomfortable, bloated to say the least. (I am just as bloated if I am 5 lbs over my comfort weight, which in essence is about 120), I don't know what to do. HELP... any comments and suggestions would be fab.

I would ask for a vaginal pelvic ultrasound. This is much more comfortable for you since you don't have to drink and hold all that water, and they can tell the number and location of fibroids much easier. What I was told at Vanderbilt was that if the fibroids are in the wall of the uterus that oblation will not remove them. It may or may not help your bleeding because the fibroids may still be there and bleeding into the wall. If they cut them out this can be more bleeding and a longer recovery than a hysterectomy because they cannot control the bleeding as well. For me since I had to have surgery on the ovary anyway it was an easy decision once I knew the facts. Every situation is different but one thing I learned was that it is always good to get a second option, and if you have the insurance pick the place you feel has the best reputation and patient care in the area. I did and I am VERY happy that I did.

Hi everyone, It is now 2weeks since I had my total hysterectomy (via keyhole) and I feel great, better than I have done for years, apetite is still not what it was, but thats not a bad thing. To be frank, bladder and bowel function is slow to improve, but I know from my consultant that in my case there was quite a lot involved separating them,so I guess Imust be a bit patient. For all who are waiting to have surgery Ican only say please try and be positive, I can only speak about my own experience of course, but at 56 I now feel like I have been given a new lease of life. Regards to all. Lyn.

Hello ladies,
I am 31 years old, mother of 1, I was devastated when they told me I needed a hysterectomy. I have been trying for the last 2 years to conceive a second child with no luck. e needed up with cervical cancer. After a couple of leaps, and a cone biopsy I was told that if I didn't have the hysterectomy, that my life would be in danger. Of course I agreed with a very heavy heart.
After lots of depression and sadness, and tears, I finally had the surgery just under three weeks ago. I had a total hysterectomy, including removal of my cervix, but they left my ovaries. I had to had an abdominal surgery because they were looking for other complications that could have been corrected then if any arose.
though I have heard vaginal or lapriscopic hysterectomies are better for healing purposes, I'm notoo bad right now. It's like I had a c section, my discards will be almost none, he did a fabulous job, I'm still having bits of being uncomfortable, walking, sleeping etc, but I have lost 15lbs since. I have a normal appetite, and I am crossing my fingers that this will continue. I haven't lost any weight in the last five years since my pregnancy with my son. So this seems to be a blessing. Maybe all my problems stemmed from the damned thing that gave me grief every month. Lol.
So far, I was depressed with the no more children thing, but right when I came from surgery those thoughts vanished. I think the benefits to this are outweighing the negative things. Though I am lucky to have a child already, if you front I hope you find the strength. Eh what the hell we ware women. Strength is our middle name. :)
have the surgery, it might save your life. Be strong, this is a new clean slate. Xoxo

I am 33 years old and exactly 1 week ago I had a robotic partial hysterectomy, pelvic organ prolapse lift, a urethra bladder sling and a stomach biopsy. So far I have lost 8lbs in 7 days. I was in the hospital for 2 days. Day 5 I began to feel better than I had the previous days. The worse part about the surgery is the air they filled me with during surgery, gets trapped inside after causing pain and pressure. I had terrible bloating, huge belly and a packing bubble wrap feeling in my shoulders and it felt hard to breathe. It seems the air, gas and digestive pains have been the worse for me. I had 5 small incisions in the row of my belly button out and 2 incisions vaginally where they were able to use surgical glue. I was encouraged to walk the morning after my surgery and have been very mobile, just warned to not lift over 5lbs. Days 1-3 were the worst from the digestive gas pains, air and bloating from surgery. I have gotten mild head aches, but day 6 & 7 were great! Later in the day my pelvis will feel a bit sore, but not pain. If anyone is going into the hospital for this procedure, I recommend saltine like crackers for after surgery, peppermint tea, and light chicken soup w a bit of brown rice for after. That seems to be most soothing. Also, if you are a light sleeper, like I am, bring ear plugs or sound proof ear muffs to the hospital for better sleep. I had a hard time getting up and down off of couch and bed for the 1st 3 days, so I recommend so bladder control pads and lots of stool softeners or fleet enemas to have at home. I hardly ever go to the bathroom (once or twice/week), and after surgery it is worse, have had only a small amount. I am happy I had the surgery, though, bcs my prolapse was becoming very bad and my uterus seems to have had adenomyosis which was spreading onto other organs. Waiting for pathology report to confirm. Do not be too afraid, stay calm and prepare in advance. Pre-freeze some light broth, non-cream soups, saltines, decaf peppermint tea(not mixed w tea leaves, just mint leaves only) and get some Depends or something. I personally was not up for visitors for the first 5 days and if you have little ones, like me(a 3 year old), try to make sure someone can help out with them bcs it would be painful if they were to bump into your belly. The 1st few days were the hardest, but 1 week later I am mostly tired, but not unbearable or terrible. I only took 2 percacet the 1st 24 hours in hospital and have not taken any pain meds at all after. Did need tylenol yesterday for headache.

Hi. I've just come across an old post of yours. I'm probably going to be having a sub-total hysterectomy, leaving my cervix & ovaries and I was wondering, since its 3 years down the road for you now, how you have found things ? Did you gain weight, did it muck around with your hormones etc ? Any advice you can give me ?
Thanks now

I am having a full Hysterectomy as I have a tumur in my uterus which is the size of a grapefruit and a sist on one of my ovaries, I am 34 never had children and am sooo scared can't sleep and am comfort eating so am putting weight on before I even have the op. Any advice from anyone maybe just to calm me from panicking would really be helpful. Its nice to hear the positives, as many have said there are loads of negatives that have scared me even more than I was before.

This is exactly what my sister told me about her hysterectomy. May I ask if you had a full or partial hysterectomy? My sister had a full one.
The description of your symptoms are exactly like mine, but also I have thyroid condition and can lose weight so quickly that a shift in my hormones keep my thyroid levels on a never ending roller coaster. Thanks for the encouragement.

Hello Julie,
I have a total almost 3 years ago June, and I was only 32. My doctor prescribed me Estrodial 1mg because I was so young when getting the procedure done. It helps decrease menopause, and with your bone density. I feel great since I've been on it, and only felt the hot flash 2x since the surgery. The only down fall, my breast got a size bigger...lol.
