Hi. I'm worried about my mum. For nearly a month, now, she's had a strange combination of symptoms. She gets a burning feeling in her head and down her arms, has a lack of appetite, feels nauseus and gets night chills.
At first, she was told it was just anxiety because I, too, was seriously unwell, but the symptoms persisted long after I was fine, and the loss of appetite and nausea had actually started before. On hearing that, she was put on antibiotics for a stomach upset. When that didn't work, she had tests for malaria and typhoid. Both were negative, but because of the symptoms and because she's had malaria before, she was advised to take a malaria medication course anyway. Which she has done.
She also took a liver test; she's had a fatty liver problem before. That problem has returned, but she is on medication for that. But the chills and burning sensation cannot be explained away by the liver problem, and the last time her nausea subsided and appetite returned after 3 days on the liver meds.
Her symptoms persist. Some days she feels a bit better, eats almost normally. Some days it's worse. The doctor has literally thrown up his hands and said "I don't know what's wrong with you." !!!!!!!
She also has a cervical rib that gives her nerve problems, which can explain the burning sensation, but what about the other symptoms? The chills, nausea and lack of appetite?
Anybody have or heard of anything similar?

Symptoms such as pain and general discomfort, as well as nausea and lack of appetite can be caused by numerous gastric/intestinal diseases... Also, which is rarely diagnosed: ovarian cancer. She may have cysts on her ovaries as well. I would have my stomach x-rayed and an ultrasound done on my ovaries. As for the burning sensation.. it may have something to do with nerves and or ...in severe case, hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain) which may cause a stroke.
You need to have your mom see a licensed professional because her symptoms sound very dangerous, especially if they are persistent.
Hope she's doing good though.

@ snowish : the doctor just told me that it was a viral/bacterial infection vise versa one turned into the other, gave me antibiotics or some kind of medicine, didnt really work or help. Still feeling like this after several years.... I wish i knew what it was, this is an ongoing problem for me, i get it a couple times of year, how often do you get it?
@ lennyray : Yes, I have exactly what your mother has, its been an ongoing problem for me, no one can figure out what it is, its very strange.

Hi. Thanks for your replies. It seems to be all sorted out now. A gazillion tests - including the scary C marker test - later, FINALLY found a doctor that realised what was going on. It WAS anxiety related - hyperacidity. Yeah, I know! Sounds like much ado about nothing, no? Some anti-anxiety meds, tablets to treat the acidity itself, and diet changes, and mum's right as rain. So PHEW!

Try visiting a dietician. Even once it was diagnosed, docs could do nothing. The symptoms kept recurring whenever mum stopped the medication. It took a dietician to finally put her right. She still gets bouts on and off, but they're nowhere as severe, and she knows what has caused it, and what she needs to do to stop it.

To Lennyray and anyone who can help, I have all the same symptoms as Lennyray's mom and no one can really tell me why. The chills are have been going on for months. I've been told that my calcium level is very low and so is my iron, while the ammonia in my blood is very high. I keep getting burning in the liver area and have no gallblatter. I also have pain in the left lower side of the front of my body and get bad headaches when I think alot.
