Hi. I have an irrational fear( or not so irrational) that something sharp will touch my eye and I may go blind. I, therefore, avoid any sharp-edged objects like pencils, toothpicks, etc like the plague and don't even get me started with knives. I remember my mom showing these news clippings of kids getting poked in the eye with a pencil when I was very young and I am pretty sure it started around that time. Now that I am 22, I still have this phobia. What should I do?

HOLY COW THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE, I’ve had this for soooo long it stresses me out. For about a month or so it hit me really bad and I couldn’t sleep because the second I closed my eyes I had REALLY vivid nightmares of basically anything stabbing my eyes. I cried a lot as it was starting to really affect my social life and everything but when I tell people about it now they just reply “ummmmmm okay”. I can’t deal with check ups at the optometrists, it just doesn’t go well, with the whole machine thing where they flash a massive light in one eye at a time and it triggers me so bad. What you said about it being caused by something traumatic happening to an eye in your childhood... ho-ly fu*k. There is this one very strong memory I have when I was probably 7??? My parents were watching some kinda doctors show and I walked in halfway through to see a lady have bloody eye surgery. There was a needle in her eye and everything, I never forgot, especially the night mare I had that night. It explains a lot. I’m so happy I found this page, I thought I was being crazy or stupid before I discovered that other people have the same thing.

I can't believe someone else has this. I wear a ball cap 99% of the time because it's the only thing that seems to protect me from it. Or I just neurogically decided that this protects me. So I'm not crazy? Sometimes I'm fine, then your brain thinks about it and it's back...I've had this as long as I can remember and I'm 49 now.

when i am in shops, if the long metal things they hang packets off on the shelves are empty and there is heaps of them poking out it really gets to my head, and i cant stop thinking about them poking me in the eyes/forehead, i have to close my eyes rub them and fully turn away its really weird!,

I have the same thing. It only happens when anything is pointed towards my eyes though. I can use knives fine but if someone points at me with a pencil or a finger or anything I just imagine a scenario where I like trip into it and my eye is stabbed. It's always been like this and doesn't really bother me but it is embarrassing to explain because I have to leave the situation or turn away and protect my eyes. I can't think of a single traumatic event that might have caused this. I also have had a tic involving my eyes since I was young, I don't know if that could be at all related. I haven't asked ay doctor about it but I'm pretty sure it is a tic. I wish I could figure this out :(

My 10 year old son has talked about this for two years now. Recently he has been talking more so I came down and Googled it. He too talks about his nightstand and also the corners of shelves at department stores. Especially if they are glass! Anxiety is an awful thing and I definitely do not want my children to experience it. I guess it's time to look into this a bit more. Thanks for sharing this.

Whenever I hold something sharp in my hands I’m afraid that it’ll get in my eye (especially my right one).
I try to stay as far as possible from people holding a knife.
Also, these past months I have hesitated to do ANYTHING that requires a sharp object ( but usually I was needed to to it so I keep my head as away from my hands as possible)

If I need to cut someting I put the scissors down as soon as possible and get away from them.

I often imagine myself stabbing my eye ( which is uncontrollable)

Ah.... And besides all of this I also have other psychological problems

I feel relieve that I am not alone. One time in school I couldn't take any notes because I felt like I was going to be hit in the eye. This feeling caused me to cover my eyes for the full period. Also, I get the fear that something is going to cut my leg when there are no sharp edges in the room.
