I'm so happy I found this thread! I'm a 36-year-old female and have had this since I was a little kid. I love it and will be sad if I ever grow out of it.

My triggers are:
-unexpected compliments from strangers (never happens if I know the person)
-thick accents (didn't realize that one until I read it here)
-someone touching or using something of mine, usually small children
-small children doing something tactile
-being given detailed instructions by a stranger
-when I was a kid, someone drawing on my back did it. Don't know if that would still work.

Once it happens, for a few minutes afterward I can make it come back by remembering the experience that triggered it.

I too would love to know the cause!

I'm 22 year old male college student. And I have experiencing the same thing since I was very young, and to be honest I thought I was the only one, but I'm glad that there's a lot of people get it too.

Triggers:
as a kid)
-When my friend used to play with my hair or when she used to draw things on my arm.
-When the class is quiet and the Teacher is writing something on the board.
-My 8th grade Geography teacher's voice, would do the same thing for me, if not put me to sleep.... everyone in class would fall asleep once he talks.

as an adult)
-My Economy teacher's voice did the same thing to me.
-Alot of the DIY videos on youtube would do it to me, especially if they have that special voice, or the objects they work with would make tedious noises.

I'm a 32 female from Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK.

i have the same experiences as outlined here, the triggures for me are the same as you've all listed so far. i can 'bring on' the sensation by imagining triggures. sometimes i get the sense of having 'run out' of the 'energy' required for the sensation and also it 'building up'.

not everyone experiences this. i've mentioned it many times and people don't know what i'm talking about. someone should research this! its such a pleasant and enjoyable feeling!

I've been getting these since I was a little kid. Still remember the trigger, too. It was some children's book about a piece of a meteorite that lands in a village, causing a whole bunch of scientists to go out and examine it.

Now, whenever I watch or read about something being strictly, scientifically scrutinized, I get it. I just got it about 15 minutes ago from reading a description of how the FBI vets potential recruits.

25 year old male from Australia here. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I think tonight was the first one I've had in a long time, which is what made me search the internet and find this thread. As far as I can recall, my only real triggers have been the "another person explaning something in detail" and occasionally "someone using something of mine", but I suppose I could have been triggered by an accent as well.

Just 10 minutes ago I was reading a blog in which the blogger posted an explanatory email to him from a telemarketer -- this is the first time I've been able to trigger it purely from reading.

I remember bringing it up with my mother when I was about ten years old and she said she had the same thing -- assuming it's not universal, I wonder if it's hereditary?

I was so excited to find out there are loads of other people who get this! I'm an 18 year old girl from England and I guess I've been getting this sensation since I was little.

I experienced it a lot in secondary school - I would watch my friends next to me as they wrote or doodled things carefully and just enjoy the tingling - like a head massage. When a friend drew something on my hand or an object of mine the sensation would be intense. I also had one teacher whose voice was sort of soft and a bit lispy - there was just something about the timbre of her voice that would make my scalp go wonderfully tingly. And when someone is describing myself to me - for example, when I get feedback from someone about my work - the tingling starts as well.

It must be something to do with attention - that would explain everything except my science teacher's voice!

They really should do a study into it or something. This is fascinating :-)

Hello! This is a great thread and I had to dig around for it. I have been getting this feeling for as long as I can remember, and I am 31. I can remember as a child in school when someone draws something on my back or brushes against my clothing, so attention, even inadvertent brings about the sensation. However, I most often get the sensation when I see or hear someone focus on something or perform a simple task. Writing with chalk on a blackboard, drawing a picture, sorting through papers, etc. As someone else mentioned, Bob Ross was able to conjure up the sensation for me many times in the past.

I tried to describe the sensation to people many times over the years but I was unsuccessful. I searched for this thread now because I just felt the sensation while sitting at work at the computer, listening to the sound of the broom wisp across the floor as the cleaning staff swept the lab. It is strange to think that and act like that can bring such a pleasant feeling, but so be it!

Whoa! Lots of replies. I wasn't expecting any considering no one ever knows what I'm talking about. So has anyone asked a doctor, yet? Maybe we should e-mail doctors we can find and link them to this topic. See if we get anything that way? Post results!

Oh and PS: I stated in my original post (the first) that if I got an itch while experiencing the sensation I would allow it to continue because it intensified the feeling. I take that back because I'm not sure thats actually true. And I also take back saying I feel nauseous afterwards. I don't actually. Its just the weird after the sensation sensation. But its not nausea. Just thought I'd clear that up.

I get this too, I'm so curious as to why it happens, I thought everyone got it, then found out they did and was really confused. There has to be a reason.

I'm one of the people who posted previously. I asked a psychiatrist friend, and he suggested that it could be a form of synesthesia, where sensory systems overlap (e.g., seeing a color and experiencing a smell). Apparently there are many different kinds of synesthesia. I think this sounds pretty plausible!

If it is then what two regions would be overlapping?
