I'm glad I found this site. I was under the impression that it happened to everyone and therefore never really mentioned it to anyone in real life. I just experienced it tonight after a long absence and decided to look the feeling up to see if there is a name. I'm a 26 year old female, and this feeling has been occurring as long as I can remember. Triggers for me are: someone borrowing an item belonging to me, someone playing with my hair (but not when I go to a salon), someone complimenting me when I don't expect it, and I expect there are others. I'm going to start paying more attention to triggers.

It really is a great feeling, and I'm sorry that everyone doesn't experience it.

hi.
i am so glad i found this site.
i am a 27yo male and have had these "tingles" for as long as i remember.
they generally start when i see someone concentrating doing something.... ie, the other day i was in a book store.... and i got these tingles just by watching someone look for books.....WEIRD!

Other things include, watching someone draw, someone discuss something of mine (ie, looking at my work, personal belongings), watching someone concentrate (read, write)

I have founf going on youtube interesting....entering in something like "brushing hair" or "playing with hair" fantastic!!!!!

>for the 30 yearold lady above

I don't know what I'm talking about outside my own experience, but here's what I'd say to you on this:

1) Be really honest with yourself (hardest step)
2) Open your mind to what your triggers are, try to understand them at the foundation (strip away the physical aspect and dig down to the emotions, memories, and thought structures underneath), and accept yourself for this completely
3) Find a place where you are not distracted or interrupted (I have to concentrate at least a little bit first - focus - and when I first learned to focus it was not automatic or easy)
4) Think on your triggers, how they relate to you, the acceptance you've given yourself on them
5) Breath normally and steadily
6) Allow yourself to open - succumb to your self entirely, from head to toe; imagine your body as a conduit, and give in. Want to give in. Feel yourself drop away under, well, your self.

Hope that helps, but again, I think this is intensely personal as much as it's shared. Every brain is wired differently (though with similar materials and mechanisms), and every soul (be it electrical or ethereal) is drawn to a different light.

Oh, another thing I use to focus on is the feeling of being whole, being fulfilled, something along those lines. Similar to a feeling of being fed, though not really in the physical sense. I often have a feeling of safety that accompanies it.

Did anyone ever setup a Facebook group or website? If not, I'm going to put one up some time this week and start correlating details. I'll post the group info here.

OK, I posted a Facebook group, with a phrase to describe both types of sensation: Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR). I made sure to add the term AIHO, too :-D, but wanted to stay away from the sexual undertones in the title, lest we be misunderstood. I've set it to a mid-grade privacy setting, so I'll have to respond to requests to join and start adding other people as admins, but then we can have some degree of privacy, as well. Only members can see photos and certain other postings, but everyone can see the wall and learn from what we post there. I'm going to start compiling some charts on the info in this thread, and I've found two others online that could be correlated. I'd really love to see some folks join and add testimonials - the more info, the better we can understand the whole thing and learn more.

Oops, tried to post a site address (sorry mods!) - you can find the Facebook group under the name "Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response Group". I'm very excited to start stats on our lists.

I posted on this forum a long time ago - back in May last year I think. Anyway, I thought I would post an update.

I started up a blog about this tingling sensation last month. Seeing as I can't post a link, just try googling or searching for " tingling in head sensation" or "tingling in my head".

The blog's name is The Unnamed Feeling. It's a blog on blogger/blogspot for the moment, and it has a few posts, with more to come. I tend to post about twice a week or so.

Have a look, and enjoy!

Wow...I was so happy to find this forum. I didn't think my search for individuals with the same thing would turn up.

Sometimes this feeling of auphoria and complete physical/emotional contentment are randomly triggered....and I'm all, "Oooo what a delightful surprise!"

But things I know will trigger this 100%:

Getting my palm read.

Someone painting of my hand or arm...not literally painting...they could be using the blunt end of a pen or a paint brush without paint on it.

Getting my tarots cards read.

Watching videos on youtube of people getting swedish massages or a head massge. (not all videos but some)

So I think we can all agree it has something to do with some aspect of attention...whether towards us or not...
such a weird thing! Someone needs to come out with an official websit really investigating this topic...we need some clinical studies and what not. Tests showing us different things we consider triggers and see what parts of our brains are lighting up.

Hi all. I just posted as a guest right before I decided to register...I listed some of my triggers and said it'd be awesome to get a clinical study going on to see what parts of our brains light up blah blah blah.

This topic has been on for so long!

It is interesting how many people experience this.

I meant to add in my last post...for me, this feeling...is NOT sexual AT ALL. It is actually a lot nicer! It is such a relaxing, pure, feeling. It's so nice...

The ASMR Group on Facebook is starting to move! We're growing, and people are adding their stats and experiences. Once we've got enough data, I plan on collating and sending to a few different researchers to see if we can get some interest. We've found some promising sites on studies into cognitive theory, the function of the amygdala and various brain 'reward' mechanisms, and some research sites that describe very similar phenomenon.

If anyone who hasn't yet joined is interested, you can join by searching for the 'Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response Group'. Some folks mentioned a concern about not exposing this particular characteristic to friends and family in their Facebook network - don't worry about using an account with all your history on it; using a new, alternative account is totally OK. We just want to share with each other - nobody is going to ask for all the dirty details on your social network. Just what you're comfortable sharing. All the stats will be anonymized before being sent anywhere, and any kind of further participation (like an invitation for study) will only be sent as a volunteer opportunity to the group - no direct solicitation or pressure to be involved.

It's amazing reading the experiences of others - one thing I keep seeing over and over is people's surprise when they realize they're not alone, and not crazy :-) Based on what we've gathered so far, we're everywhere around the planet!

Haircuts, and when someone is focusing on me. Helping me with Homework, trying to explain something to me. But I had the weirdest one today, I walked into a video game store and looked around at some games and it just happened.

I spent hours one night looking up this feeling, and I cant believe i finally found it!

im a 17 year old caucasian male and i have had this feeling since i was a little kid. What gives me this sensation is pretty much what everyone agrees with, calm slow speaking or directions, usually by a much older person...etc. But i have also gotten it at other random times, like while reading other peoples experiences on this thread. I cannot make it come out the blue but i can semi-control it once i have it. Thinking about it and staying calm keeps it going and even increases the sensation until it gets to greater and greater "pulses" sometimes. and if i do anything physical or begin talking with someone it mostly goes away. I hope some research has been done and we can find a name for this

and for the previous posters:

-yes, i consider myself artistic and creative
-i can easily "read" others emotions and understand their feelings

ok well as for these chills..i have had many points of view shared with me...from stuff about the soul to physical reaction of the subconscious triggered by any kind almost any kind of trigger to create adrenaline depending on the trigger there are different effects but for sure it taps into our potential(heat endorphins the list goes on)...no matter who u are or what u believe it is true...its not hard to see the normal benefits but untold natural power that this holds...i have taught many people how to control it and use it for many different uses...and also other weird things have happened while i tested the bounds of not just one person doing it but two using and sharing this as a bond and transfer of energy's...in my latest test i used someone who knew nothing of what i was doing but got her to do this....

we both sat in front of each other u can either touch finger tips or hold hand in front of the others hand palms towards each other flat about an inch a part...concentrate on breathing and one who knows how to trigger it is needed and the other only clears there mind...
i have many things happen...feeling pulsing or like a energy (not only heat) circulate in one hand and out the other...yes u can think im crazy but the whole point that ur all here means that u as well as anyone else cant explain this more than its a natural reaction to something...let alone prove it...but she finally felt it after a few minutes and she freaked and her whole body spzed in what i could read as fear but her body in a bolt of energy she shot back(her movements not some cartoon c**p)and her auto safety guard was her top body leaning all the way forward to make a vertical fetal position...she said she felt a dark heavy energy..i dont consider myself evil but i am a person who holds alot of negative emotions...alot of pain anger and deep very deep depression...(yes ive been to psychologist,he said i was unique and a tad weird, but not crazy)...after that it was like we felt like the other person...and it happened at the same time....like im normally one who is very cuddly and always wants to show affection twards the one i like and shes the opposite...and we completely switched roles..she goes u know what "im a b***h" all i could do is laugh because i now could feel all the weight she carried and all the stresses shes been holding on to..we were in shock for awhile as to the experience we both went threw...
im not saying this will happen for anyone else or ever again but i dont know what to think...i couldnt understand.if it was just me..then its just i got something wrong with me...but i was raised christian and they tell me the chills are gods blessing...but if its gods blessing then why can i do it on command with just a second of concentration...anyway she was raised strict Mormon very sheltered, very protected..and she reacted that way not knowing of what i was trying to do...(no drugs were involved i dont use drugs of any kinds and like i said i have no need for psych meds either)

Like a lot of other people on here i came across this randomly. I am always googling everything and yet it never dawned on me to google this. I guess it is just one of those things that I had come to believe only I experienced. I know a few times when I was younger I tried to see if anyone I knew had this sensation but most just thought I was a little nutty.

I am 40 now but have been having this since I was very young. It seems like it happened a lot more often when I was younger but it still happens now and again. I seem to have a lot of the same triggers as others on here. One in particular that I remember from when I was younger was going to the tailor. My family always used the same family tailor and they would always hem pants for me. It was an older German couple that were the tailors. Whenever I went there and they started doing their measurements I would just get over taken by a supreme sense of bliss.

I have had a lot of other triggers in my life. It is always centered around someone doing something in my presence, usually doing something for me or helping me with something, but not needing me to be doing much but observing. I have noticed recently that is happens sometimes while I am listening to phone messages. At work, I get a lot of sales calls and sometimes the voice of the person and the tone can cause me to have one.

I also came across this video that kind of does it;

Without the internet I am sure I would have gone to my grave without ever knowing another person who shares this experience. I guess we are lucky :)
