Hey people.
I am also an AIHO/AIE/AIOEU/ASMR "sufferer."
I am a 19 year old Caucasian male and I believe I have had this sensation my whole life. Some of my strongest memories of my early childhood (Age 3-6) have been of having this sensation.
I get this sensation from various triggers like listening to people around me, or having someone playing with my hair, or watching someone concentrate or work, listening to some music or certain voices (particularly strong Asian accents), soft touching or tickling, repeated noises, and many others.
One trigger that stood out for me was when I was walking with my mother and my younger sister through a parking lot towards Target. My sister was conversing with my mom and for practically no reason whatsoever, I got one based around a very strong and seemingly deep love for my sister existing and being my sister. It is hard to describe the sensation or the basis of why I got it then. It is not sexual in nature, although that doesn't mean sex can't trigger it. I personally can't describe its connection towards sex being that I have not experienced sex yet.
I remember bringing this up with my mom once. She didn't seem to know what I was talking about, therefore I didn't go into detail with her. The "Non-Feelers" just don't get it.
I actually just was on the internet and it dawned on me that I, for the first time ever, was going to try to find out about my head tingles.
I actually thought I was alone with this until I finally found similar posts. I am so glad there are others out there. It is surprising how many people thought they were unique/crazy with this. I definitely thought that either I was special or insane. Why do you think that this feeling makes us feel so good, but feel very uniquely alone in our experience of it? I find that very intriguing.
I can't imagine people not having this feeling. Maybe it is more intense or meaningful to others. I personally think those who recognize it and question it are those that experience it with greater intensity. I guess it is possible that others don't feel it whatsoever though.
This feeling is definitely the best feeling I can experience. A sexual orgasm is more intense yes, but this feeling is so pure and warm and relaxing. Because of those qualities I believe it beats a sexual orgasm any day.
I really want to see if people with certain qualities experience this or if it is totally random.
In response to some other posts-
I do consider myself artistic and creative especially in my imagination.
I also think I have great perspective and I believe it is my greatest gift/"talent." I believe I can connect and read others emotionally very well.
I consider myself sympathetic and empathetic.
Although I am probably very biased with my answers to these questions, I can pretty confidently say that with as little bias as possible these answers are true.

I just had a sensation after watching a youtube video, and decided to go on google and see if it ever happened to anyone else and found this. I haven't had one in a while (few months). Last time I had one was a complete stranger talking to me on the phone. I had this alot when I was younger and ive never told anyone. Usually a teacher writing on the chalkboard, getting my hair cut, someone borrowing something of mine, or even watching Bob ross or other painters on tv would always trigger it. And like others its the same thing tingling sense of calmness euphoria around the back of the head going down to the spine. Usually if im really calm and dont move it will last a long time. And like others I am a good artist my Dad, uncles, aunts can all paint pretty well. Im usually really good about reading people very quickly and I am a empathic person. I recently started playing the guitar(Ive never played a instrument before) and im very good at it, was almost easy to me. I would like to know what the cause is for this its seems we all have very similar symptoms. Im a 23 year old Caucasian male.

I'm Caucasian/Male/19yr
I've experienced this for as long as I can remember. I've always thought I was the only one to have this feeling because I never heard anything about it. It is so nice and intriguing at the same time to find other people with the same feeling.
My triggers are:
-Hair being cut/played with
-Arms being drawn on/being touched
-Seeing a demonstration(mostly on products)
-Someone explaining something to me
-Tutorial Videos (but they have to be done in a certain way, I don't really know how to explain it but, if its a professionally done tutorial I won't get it, but if its done by an average joe then I will)

Hi everyone.
I am a 25 year old male from California. I am very active, athletic, and healthy. I have many similar triggers for this sensation as others have posted such as watching someone doing an intricate task, listening to someone read, etc.
A few triggers I have not seen mentioned (I may have missed them if someone did) are the sounds from women eating, chewing gum, sucking a lolipop or other hard candy. I suppose my sensations are somehow sexually related because the biggest trigger for me is when a woman kisses or breathes into my ear. It must have been really apparent how much I liked having this done to me because I never had to request extended periods of this from any of my girlfriends. Youtube videos that work like a charm for me are ones involving kissing. I'm not sure if videos of men and women work or even exist on Youtube, but I prefer to watch and listen to the videos containing females exclusively. It's the sounds that really get to me. I don't even have to watch the video. I just have to listen to it.
I tried to keep that as clean as possible while still adding my personal experiences of this awesome sensation. I hope to learn and listen to stories about it from all of you.
Good luck to everyone in feeling it.

Amazing stuff! You should all speak to your family if you havent already, and see if they experience the same thing. Strangely enough, my father, sister and brother experience the same sensation. Whenever I get it I just sit there like a vegetable and try and think about nothing else other than what brought on the feeling! Its the only way I can hold on to it. I call it "head pins and needles".

Hi everybody
As many of you, I decided to google this sensation and found this thread. Like you I'm surprised and pleased so many people experience it. It doesn't seem to be something rare as many of us came here.
My triggers are people doing things with concentration, people talking slowly and calmy explaining something, and as many said, sometimes haircut.
My guess is this comes from some kind of empathy with the person if he/she is doing something as we imagine what would be the feeling of doing it.
The sensation is not on the scalp for me, but rather from the interior of the head, like near the hypothalamus, and then it spreads to the back of my head and down my back. I thought that maybe here we were exagerating something pretty common among people, which is the pleasant sensation that comes from a massage (a good one), but after talking to my girlfriend I see that she can understand the kind of sensation it is, but she never felt it while watching someone (but during my massages she does). So I'm pretty sure this is something special. Someone spoke about ynesthesia and I thing there's something about it there.
Keep this thread live!!! And let's create a facebook group!

There's one already in place for it: (if the link is censored, it's called 'Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response Group' - you should be able to search for it. The logo is just a big circle.)
The group is trying to collect statistics on it to get clinical researchers interested, and members are discussing triggers, the similarities between sensations, what the possible physical and mental causes are, and what our day to day experiences are. You have to join by request, to keep random browsers from dropping in and littering the wall with jokes or insults (some people truly don't understand it because they've never had it, and therefore can't imagine it), but you should get a quick response to your request, and then you can come join us in figuring it out.

Yes, I'm 13 and I didn't know other people felt this too...
I'm pretty glad I searched this up :)
This is the biggest trigger for me.
I find that make up videos give me tingling especially.
Sometimes, I even feel this tingling a bit in my back..

I love this feeling! I normally feel it with a soothing voice that is generally quiet, yet confident, and explaining something very linearly--not starting and stopping, just confidently moving through their point.
So...I give you a link to something that gave me this feeling recently while listening to NPR in my car. Listening to this professor Kenneth Shea I quickly became calm and almost sedated. It sounds so weird saying but it really is an amazing experience. I'm glad my brain responses to interesting scientific things! Kenneth Shea is the man being interviewed whose voice is very soothing, Ira Flatow the host not so much, so give it a second and listen through. It's almost hypnotic!
See if you agree!

Update from the ASMR group:
- We now have a research team formed!
- A forum and www research website has been created, called asmr-research (it's an org site)
Note: if you can't reach the link, just Google "Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response support & research", without quotes - sorry, mods don't allow direct links on this forum.
Should see in search return:
Quote:
- We are using the Facebook group, website, and forum to build a portfolio for proposing micro-financing of an independent clinical research effort. :) It's going to take a lot of convincing, and a lot of community participation, so if you have the time, please stop by the forum (it's on the website, under the 'Support' tab), and add your basic stats. Anything will help, and if you're feeling really adventurous, we'll be looking for volunteers soon for some online data gathering and experiments! You can be part of a very ground-level group trying to explore this sensation and document it for what appears to be the first time!

wow i never realised so many people had this. i've never talked about it to anyone because i thought i was the only one that had it. i'm a 20yo male and the first time i remember getting it was when i was about 8. I love the feeling but only experience it about once a week if that. i usually get it if things/tasks/favors are being done for me such as
Hair being cut/played with
-Arms being drawn on/being touched
someone cleaning my house
My main one is probably when someone washes the outside of the windows of my house. i just sit there and watch and listen without moving because it's such a good feeling.
I also get it when someone is paying close attention to something
So has anyone actually figured out what it is?
Don't have enough time to read all of the posts

Hey guys, I have been having this feeling since early teens. Perhaps I had even earlier, just don't remember it.
For me its all about sound. Certain sounds that people make trigger it. The sounds have to be very soft, rhythmic.....its kind of hard to describe them.
Also, if someone whispers it can go off really hard. However, the whispering works only with certain people. For example I remeber making up a spelling test and we were in another class so she had to whisper the words to me. That feeling was going crazy in my head. I can still remember it.
Also I can get a very strong felling when someone cuts my hair with scissors.....
Also when I experience it, I kind of don't see anything, I mean my eyes still see stuff, but they are not focused on anything. Its as if i go to sleep with my eyes open. I almost drift off in to another world.
This feeling is mostly in the back and top of my head.
the interesting thing, is that I was able to get a feeling similar to it by applying quick bursts of pressure on the neck. To be more specific, I applied pressure bursts to the back sides of my and it felt as if i was pushing on a rubberband(hard one). You can sort of feel the pulling pressure emanate in to your head and you also get the AIHO(as some one described) feeling.
