Julia I just recently can off the shot its been 4 weeks and my breast are really sore and tender to so it must be the shot.
Be aware of the Depo Shot!!! I have been on for 9 1/2 years, I decided to go off as my fiance' has had a vasectomy and I dont need to be on any birth control. Over the course of getting my injections I have had a weight gain of approximately 40-45 pounds with trying to lose even 10 of it has been impossible with all diets. I have had significant hair loss to the point that my doctor for 2 years ran thyroid tests to see if there was any failure to find that everything was normal. At the 7 year mark, my GYN doctor required a Bone Density test due to some studies that the depo was showing osteoporosis in patients, everything came back normal. So onward I went getting my shots, not having any periods and being my 191 pound self. I was due for my shot just on the 25th of this month and I have already experienced breast tenderness, stomach aches, body aches and migranes. Anyone who has posted to this, please continue to do so as there no doctor who can give us any info on this as they let us take the medication but dont take the responsibility to inform us properly. The manufacturer of Depo Provera actually indicates that we should not take this for more than 3 years!!! some of us have done this 3 times the recommended time frame. Take Care Ladies, and continue sharing.
I have taken the depo shot only once. I took it in june or july, and i started bleeding on august 27. i have finally stopped bleeding (sort of) six days ago...its jan 30. now, i'm having headaches all the time, nausea, cramping, and mood changes. i was hoping maybe i was pregnant...but now i fear that maybe i will never have the chance to have a child. warn your daughters, cousins, mothers, nieces...this is a dangerous drug. did i mention that i'm only 18........
Did any of your Drs warn you about this? I am so angry that they don't tell you. I was only on Depro for 6 months and me and hubby are now thinking of starting a family. I have now found out it could take a year for my periods to come back!!!!
oh thank goodness there are other ladies out there with the same concerns as me. i've been on depo for the last 7 years, had a two year break without before that, and previous to that was on it for 5 years. the first time i went off depo everything was fine, my period came back almost immediately. THIS time around it's not back yet. i had my last shot in october 06 and the only thing i have had is incredibly sore and growing breasts! i have literally gone up a whole size. none of my bras fit and they are so sore i can barely even move without them hurting! funny, but as reading all of the other comments, i too, have been incredibly hot and having hot flashes all night long (but chalked up to a warm feather bed) and am incredibly moody. my husband can't stand me sometimes :-)

has anyone had luck getting pregnant? i have gone off in hopes of trying for a baby by the end of 2007. i'm terrified i've messed my body up permanently with this shot and will never be able to conceive. i loved the years of no periods, but now, i want it all back and hope i didn't ruin that for myself forever.
is anyone pregnat after getting off the depo shot iam hurting the same way with my brest ad iam worried email me at ****** and please tell me write in the sbject what it is about just type depo and i will no so i dont delete it
PLEASE

This woman's experience sounds about the closest to mine. I was on Depo for 9 months (three total shots). Initially, after about five months of pretty steady "spotting," the periods vanished. Shortly thereafter, though, so did the libido -- and that's when I ditched anything hormonal in favor of old-fashioned diaphragms and condoms.

At any rate, my last shot was in July of 2006. I figure that means the effectiveness of the last shot wore off three months later, last October. Now, four months later (in February 2007), my periods haven't returned, my breasts are mega-tender, and I'm starting to put on a few pounds. I wondered: Does this experience sound familiar to anyone else? I got the vibe from a few posts that it could take up until 1.5 years (18 months) for a period to return after stopping the shots (not certain whether or not this is based on prolonged usage). My gyno told me that I was on it for a short enough time that I probably don't have to worry about bone density issues. I plan on going back to the office soon and checking up on these other issues. In the meantime, though ... any insights?

Thank you so much. Based on some posts here, I'm extremely glad I stopped taking Depo when I did!
I had my last Depo shot in September and I figure I have been taking it for around 8 years. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in December and my cancer is hormone receptive, so no more birth control. I am so glad to read this post as I was having extremely sore breasts too and have still not had a period. I have the hot flashes as well and find that I am extremely tired. I was chalking a lot of it to the cancer, but it has been a month since a very successful surgery and both breasts are still tender. The cancer was in the left breast, so when the right one was sore I was a bit freaked out!! The oncologists like to work around your cycle when scheduling treatement, but as of yet, I have not had one. Interesting to read all your comments. This information should be available to us through our medical doctors, but it is absolutely not. Trust me, I have seen a doctor almost every week lately!! No one has brought this to my attention.

Thanks all for your candor. It is very helpful.
My last injection was in June '06. It took my body six months exactly to start having periods again. However, every two weeks thereabouts I keep bleeding. It only seems to last for a couple of days though. I too have been experiencing extreme breast tenderness (niple) and lumpiness. Putting ice seemed to be the only thing thusfar to desensitize them and ease the discomfort. I have noticed pain radiating down my arm. While the pain isn't extreme, it makes me quite concerned as to the possibility of a heartattack? While I understand that a heartattack can happen at any age, I am only 33 and would hate to think that Depo was the primary cause. I'm paying paticular attention to my diet (lower fat and vitamin supplements) and exercise (strength training and cardio). Did you know that lifting weights can help your bone density? Check it out.
I have been on the depro shot for about 4 years. I came off because of the weight gain. I am a very health person. I eat a very good diet and I have an active life style. I gained 11 punds in the first 3 month although nothing changed in my diet or activity level. I have been off for about 7 months now and it has been very bad. I started to loose weight after joining herbal magick, everything was going so well. Now my brestes are soooooooo sore. My nipples hurt so bad even if I touch them. I have started to put the weight back on. (I worked so hard to get it off.) All weight gain seems to be in my boobs and stomch. I feel like sh*t all the time. I feel so mis-lead by my Dr. I was told non of this. Iam so sad all the time. I cry for no reason, or maybe it is because i am so angry. the depro shot has turned my life upside-down.
I too have been having some problems with it. I went on the Depo 6 weeks after my first child was born. I missed a shot about a year later no problems there started my period and was able to get another shot. 2 years later i went off it again and got pregnant before i had another period, after the birth of that baby i got a shot before i left the hospital. Due to financial reasons I had to go off it again a year after my second child was born. That was in december, in janurary i had what i thought was a period, very very very light though, i mean almost no bleeding at all. I am spotting in between what I am calling my period which is still very very very light. Not having any soreness but definately seeing the moodswings. Really wish I would have not gone on this 5 years ago.

Hoping and Praying for a normal life again soon %-)
Anybody has any suggestions please let me know.
I was on the depo provera injection from January 2004 until October 2006. During that time I gained about 17 pounds (from 107 to 124). When I came off the shot in October I had no problems for the first couple of months. I lost about 10 pounds rather quickly. Some time during January or February I started having bad pain in my breasts, especially my right one. I started my first period since coming off the shot a couple of days ago. It is a lot heavier than I remember it being before the shot. I felt nauseous for about a week before my period started. I even thought it was morning sickness, and I might be pregnant.

WOW, your story sounds as if you are living my life! I would not recommend Depo to my worst enemy, my body is so messed up. I have never actually looked forward to my period but I hope for it every day just to get rid of some of this bloat. I have been off Depo since June 2006 and we are into MArch 2007 with no sign of my period at all. I also am glad I stopped Depo when I did, I had only 2 shots and my body is still not normal!
I have also stopped the depo shot. I was on it for about 4-5 years. My last shot was August 2006. I was due for another shot at the end of November but my husband had a vasectomy so I didn't get it. It's now March 2007, no period yet. I've been getting alot of migrains, on and off nausea, hot flashes, sleepless nights. I gained alot of weight being on the shot, 20-30 lbs. It's so hard to keep it off. My cousin was on the shot for several years, she said it took her 9 months before she had her first period. This was about 2 years ago, she is pregnant now. I've been experiencing alot of cramping the last two days. Is this a sign that my period is about to start? Can anyone tell me what to expect with my periods. How bad will they be? Thanks.
Hello, I recently took the depo provera shot this past Septemer the 1st 2006. I want to have a baby so i chose not to take the shot again when it was due in Dec. My period is yet to return and i have had such crazy things going on with my body such as, muscle, bone pain..hot flashes, cravings and now lower cramping around ovaries.
I am ready for my period to come back..DEPO is the DEVIL
