Can you please tell me more about pseudocyesis.
Pseudocyesis is a disorder in which a woman gets an impression that she is pregnant and even develops all the symptoms of pregnancy but the pregnancy hasn’t occurred and there is no fetus. Most commonly, the disorder appears due to strong need or desire for motherhood.
Women stop having periods, their breasts swell, abdomen enlarges, she starts secreting milk from her breasts. Even uterus and cervix could be showing pregnancy. Her abdomen may expand and she will look pregnant but it is usually just gas, feces, fat and urine. The symptoms may last from a few months to a few years. The incidence of the disorder has decreased because of many screening tools today but sometimes these screening tests may not be enough and women who suffer from the disorder may need counseling.
Pseudocyesis may even lead to depression when a woman realizes that she is not pregnant.
Many women who suffer from this disorder have other psychological issues that need to be addresses and psychotherapy usually helps.
