I have been experiencing bleeding along with the passing stool for the last two weeks. I have been looked at (read fingered) by a doc, no hemorrhoids were found. Now, my doc wants to perform sigmoidoscopy on me and I would really like to hear more about the procedure. Will I be put to sleep? I am really worried. I am scheduled for the next week. I hope someone can get back to me until then. Thanks

Hi there! Unfortunately you won’t be put to sleep but don’t worry, you will survive, at least I did.
When you are done you may go home. The feeling is a bit irritable since they examine you by fingering first and then they place endoscope inside your rectum and let some air into your stomach and bowels, so they could see better. That’s not so comfortable as you may experience some cramping and awful bloating after the exam. Luckily, you don’t have to undergo a colonoscopy when they view a whole colon. Sigmoidoscopy is indicated only for rectum and the beginning of the colon (1-2 feet out of whole 5-6). Luckily, the procedure doesn’t last very long. I was stiff all the time. I don’t know if they are going to do any biopsing on you, I suppose it depends upon what/if they find something.
