what do you do when you cant urinate or completely empty your bladder after your tonsillectomy?

I had difficulty urinating for about a week after my surgery. I was able to pee, but had to force myself and even then I only managed a little bit. I was extremely swollen because I retained all the water and having that plus not being able to pee, it was really awful. I can't say for sure why it happened. I'm not sure what you can do besides wait it out. I found that everyday it got a little bit easier. If it doesn't for you, then you should probably head back to the doctor.

The same thing happened to me! I was wondering if it was normal. I guess so. I just had mine out five days ago.

I had no idea that this was even a problem that you could have after a tonsillectomy. Can you tell me a little more about it? I think that this sounds like a pretty awful experience and I wasn't aware that it happened to some people. If you're still on the forums, can you enlighten me? Thanks so much!

I'm on day three and I have difficulty urinating as well. It's not really that bad I just have to really squeeze to get it out! But the throat! Oh it sucks but I just keep thinking how my throat will probably never hurt like this again.

Have you considered using a catheter at home or something like that? Maybe that would help you with your issue if your doctor would be okay with that. What do you think?

I'm just starting my 2nd day post surgery, and noticed having difficulty right away. Dr. told me to be on an all liquid diet for first day or two, but i can't urinate, it's really kinda upsetting me. my wife called the hospital about it, they said that it was normal and it should pass, but that if a complete inability to urinate occurs with a lot of pain, to go to the ER and a cathater will be put it. Luckily it hasn't been that bad, but trying to sleep with a full bladder and only being able to empty very little at a time is very disheartening. Anyone been able to find natual ways of relief??

I'm glad to hear that you've been doing okay. The best that I would recommend is to massage a little bit to help relieve your pain. Have you been able to urinate a little better since posting?

I'm so glad to hear others have this problem and I'm not the only one - it's considered normal! I really started to worry. I had my tonsils removed yesterday and have had a problem urinating right away. I can urninate but it takes a lot of push to get it out! Pretty uncomfortable but at least I'm able to go....

I just got my tonsils out earlier today and the same thing is happening to me. It was not till the fourth time i went to the restroom that I realized i was really having to force it out instead of it just flowing out like it usually dose so its not just a few people, its happening to many people.

Im on day 3 of surgery recovery and having difficulty urunating and going to the bathroom. I hear from other people that it is normal. So I haven't asked the doctor. I find it easier to pee if I drink lots and lots of liquids. I also found that the more dozage of medicine (pain killer) I take, the harder it is to pee. So I beleive is the medecine's side effect. Don't let this scare you. Peeing slow is nor payingfull at all, just annoying. Hang in there.

It is not normal to have such problems with urination after toncil surgry. They probably did something with your urethra and bladder also when you was under anesthesia. The simplest answar is that you got a catheter during the surgery and they installed it in a clumpsy way, but was taken out again before you were fully awake. They possibly also did a cystoscopy or other examination in your urinart system. One fairly often chooses to do another planned procedure or examination at the lowewr body at the same time, because the opportunity is good for doingit.

Just got mine pulled out yesterday. I find jumping in the shower helps me pee immediately.
