I 14 and had my tonsils out 3 days ago and I can tell you that it is way worse than people say its gonna be. I haddn't eaten since the operation but about an hour ago I ate ice cream and then had a full bowl of pasta, it hurt loads but it was soo worth it cause I was starving. They say to eat toast but I couldn't swallow this ... milk helped me a lot

I'm 16 and on day 8 recovery, the pain is unbearable and I almost regret getting the tonsillectomy, after the operation and when I came around it was a bit sore but I was STARVING I had some soup that hurt a little but managed to eat it. They kept me in over night only due to the distance I lived from the hospital but on that night I had eaten so much, chocolate, cakes, jacket potato, biscuits loads of junk food , you name it I had it! But the next morning I was in terrible pain and barley managed to eat weetabix! In struggling to eat any thing now everything I eat causes pain, I've been in tears before now with the pain. One thing i do NOT recommend to eat is a pot noodle! I thought it would go down easy but it done nothing but sting my throat...which again brought me to tears, the crisp 'wotsists' are the easiest thing for me to eat because they dissolve on my tongue. I've tried spaghetti on toast, pasta, jacket potato, curry soup(now sick of) rice puddig, EVERYTHING hurts when I eat !! craving chicken nuggets so bad ( no idea why ) and can't wait to be able to eat one!! I also get a vile taste in my mouth And after a bit everything I eat starts to taste of it and puts me off food! I'm trying my best to eat as 'normal' as I can so I can return back to work and college but it is way to painful, even drinking Ice cold water hurts !I've tried over 6 different medicines and tablets for my throat and the doctor had given me cocodamol on dissolve but I couldn't take them because thy made me gag - which hurt my throat more. I'm also coughing up a brown thick liquid every now and then which is disgusting! I have around 3 hours sleep before I wake up in pain again! My dad has done everything possible to try make me feel better -mash my food up or blend it, makes sure I take me medicine, makes me any food I'm willing to try there, spent a lot of money on my medicine as I go through a bottle in 2 days bought me the mouthwash but still this pain. If I could turn back time without a doubt I would refuse to have this operation because not even my tonsillitis hurt this much and I'd rather go through having that every month like I did before than what I'm going through now, and to let you all know I was on the waiting list for 5 years to get my tonsils out and couldn't wait thinking it would be a walk in the park but it's my biggest regret, rant over haha

My daughter just had her tonsils out, she is 10.  A few things we have found helpful Sonic sells crushed ice cubes by the bag.  The ice is great in water, blended with juice or all by itself.  We are 3 days out, last night we figured out there is such a thing as too much ice cream...  Today we blended a naked juice with the ice from Sonic and it is now her favorite, and mine too!  The juice is full of fruits and veggies and with the ice cool enough to provide relief for her.   She is dying to eat we tried some cool chicken broth today and it stung going down so we will wait a few more days!

Hey hey I'm 19 and mine out 5 days ago. The surgeon advised to try and eat as normally as you can as quickly as possible avoiding ice cream and dairy for a couple of weeks. Apparently the milk/yoghurt/ice cream builds up bacteria on the area and can cause infection. Lots of foods like toast, crisps and scratchy things were advised as these help to break down the scabbing in the back of the throat!

Yes but you can not eat anything RED because you will not tell if it's blood or not

I had my tonsills out on the 9th, so it will be my 7th day tomorrow, as soon as I woke up from surgery I was fine, I had to eat toast which was fine, and I felt better chewing then not! Then I left the hospital and was feeling pretty rough but the next day I was perfectly fine eating normal food, crusty rolls and it was all fine.. Then about day 4 it just went down hill from there it got worse and worse and worse! I think my scabs are coming off now and that's making my throat feel quite raw and sharp hoping I don't bleed! But on day 5ish I did have a little blood in my spit but nothing major! Just hoping it can only go up but who knows! I haven't ate in 2 days and I am starving! I'm 17, and I can say I wasn't expecting this when I signed up aha!

Hello everyone its day 7 post surgery for me (8 if you included surgery day). I turned 40 years old 5 days before my surgery..The 1st and 2nd day was a bit ok since the anesthesia was still there but i was nauseous because of it too but i have been sipping water every chance i get, so hungry..had apple sauce but its too thick and stays in throat unless you flushed it with water.. 3rd day i can now feel the real pain and its not funny at all, its so hard to swallow even sips of water so i dont know how others could eat burgers around this time. Had sone jello but it gave me bad heartburn and it really hurts.. Also tried ice cream but it made me have a lot of mucus so big no no. Day 4 i had some mashed potato smothered in beef broth room temp and it really made me feel good specially after not eating for a few days.day 5 i stopped my pain med because it made me so nauseous everytime i take it..told my doc and he said its fine.. Day 6 i had chicken porridge and its so good with lots of broth.. Pain is manageable.. Only water for me no any other kind of liquid coz it makes me have a bad heart burn.. Day 7 went to see my doc for a follow up and he said my throat looks good and in 2 wks the scabs will be off.. Im now having super soft bake fish and noodles and so happy.. Took a while to eat it.. Slowly but surely... Im hoping for a fast recovery.. And to everyone whose having or had their surgery good luck and God bless us

I got my tonnsils and abnoids out about 8 days ago. I am 16 years old. I honestly didn't think it would be this bad. As days go on get more energy but the pain comes and goes in many places like my ears, throat, even my tongue hurts some time. I red some of the comment saying they can eat a burger! I can barley drink my water at times because it hurts. Today's day 8 and the scabbings coming so every time I eat it burns or even swallow sometimes. As the days go on I feel it get better. I lost 10 pounds. I just hope this is over soon. My doctor said eat foods that can be tolerated and not to force yourself if there's pain. He also said drink a lot of liquids stay away from the color red in any food so it doesn't get confused with blood if you cough it up and I can have jello, mashed potatoes, Popsicles witch are easy to eat and I tryed ice cream but it's too thick and I had to stop. I do take naps during the day but at night it's so hard too sleep I keep waking up and having crazy dreams but I think it's because of the pain meds I'm on. I just wanna no how long this pain is gonna last and when will I be able too eat real food without the pain.

I know this is really really lae but in case other people read this post and see what you said it is a less than favorable option to wait. The older you get the worse it will feel in fact. I had mine removed yesterday and the surgeon got onto me for waiting so long because he had to go down into my throat and tear out scarring that had built up over the years- and I'm only eighteen.

I had my tonsils removed a week ago. I thought i would die! Besides the outrageous pain and the fact of staying home , I was living off of canned fruits , ice pops , and jello. I was in too much pain to think about some others soft foods i could eat. Today i found out about this website. I also found out i could eat some of my favorite foods. Such as spaghetti and pancakes. Since the surgery , i feel 1,000 times better. Thanks a ton for the info.
