Ive had one for a month, at first it hurt really bad and my gland was swollen, it also was white and protruded...almost looked "spikey"  The dentist said it looked like a wart, (possibly HPV?)  I just had a biopsy done today and wont find out what it is for another month.

I'm sorry to comment on this, but it's difficult to accept an answer to the problem, even if it is accurate, from people who can't spell basic words.  Gues on 9/12/06 "the what part is puss".  what does that mean in English.

Causes :

Bumps are formed due to injury caused to the tongue accidentally. You may bit your tongue or your tongue may get infected whiel eating any sharp food stuffs causing swelling and pain on the tongue. Eating huge quantities of acidic foods can also cause bumps. It can appear on the upper layer of the tongue or on its side and sometimes at its back. Eating lot of sweets and sugary items can also give rise to bump formation. It can also be caused due to disturbance in gastrointestinal tract and due to heightened stress and emotions. Thus there is every chance that underlying medical condition can cause bumps on your tongue. Bumps are not contagious but it is good to leave them undisturbed.

Sometimes, using hard toothbrush or rough brushing techniques of the mouth can also cause bumps and bleeding on the tongue.

Bumps formed due to trauma are called lie bumps. They look like tiny balls white or red in color and it will cause tenderness in the tongue for many days.

Treatment:

Bumps can be treated using topical ointments and gels over the counter. Several home remedies are available in the form of Aloe Vera juice and honey and yoghurt for curing bumps.

You need to follow proper oral hygiene to protect from bumps. Make it a point to brush your teeth after eating food and practice regular flossing techniques. Bumps may affect your taste buds causing infection.

You can use over the counter drugs like Zilactin and orabase for curing bumps since they cover them acting as a shield. Applying this pack will give you some relief from irritation and swelling pain.

Alternatively you can rinse your mouth well with warm saline water or antifungal mouthwash.

I've got exactly the same thing. I had a cold a few days ago, plus my throat hurts. I don't know whether this could be strep throat.

Sounds like a canker sore, you can grin and bear it and it will go away in a few days, or gargle and swish around some warm salt water to recieve some comfort.

The part where you(guest commentator) said that "having extra amounts of salt in your stomach could cause an ulcer" is NOT TRUE! This could only in part be, remotely(very!) "true" about overly processed, non iodized table salt. SEA SALT is excellent for our health in so many ways and pink himalayan salt has 89 minerals that are absolutely essential to human bodies! Processed foods with lots of hidden crappy salt is the culprit for probs because of the way it is processed and can cause damage. Especially be careful for those with high blood pressure. I am currently on a "high salt" intake because my whole foods(healthy) lifestyle didn't include enough of the minerals we NEED from salt! If you have extra low blood pressure...you NEED salt stat! The good salt would never cause an ulcer prob. Please be informed before putting statements like this on the internet for others to perpetuate!

I have that right now at the same exact place as you. Looks like a pimple in my opinion. I just took my nail and scratched it off. After it came out I don't feel anymore pain. The white ball was already sticking out but was still attached to my tongue.
