Trade in your marathon records for a jump in the mud and you'll never want go back. Tough Mudder typically comes near big cities once a year, so finding similar competitions around your hometown can assure you to feed your addiction all year long.

This is Sparta! No, this is just another weekend warrior event (props to the marketing crew for embracing the popularity of the 2006 hit-film 300). This event again is similar to Tough Mudder and offers many different lengths from three miles to more than twelve. Runners drench themselves in mud and water as they do in Tough Mudder but often honor the Greek Gods like Hercules in the Hercules Hoist. In this event you must pull your rope tied to a weighted ornament and carefully place it back on the ground. Here's where we find another difference from Tough Mudder: if you fail during a task, you are disciplined. Burpees are served up to those not tough enough to conquer the events in the same manner the Spartans conquered their enemies. As you cruise through the internet for videos you'll see competitors jumping over fire, climbing rope, scaling walls and challenging themselves all while having a great time.

Emulating some of history's most talented warriors in a multi-mile competition is a great way to challenge yourself and add a positive sentiment to the term "weekend warrior."

Warrior Dash

Warriors, come out and play! Now, I doubt this race is based off the 1979 cult classic film "The Warriors," but the catchphrase could work to draw in competitors. Another tough off road race, this 5k challenges participants the same way as Tough Mudder. Some obstacles may differ slightly but most are almost the same as the previous mentioned races. One event that stays unique to Warrior Dash is "Goliath." During this event you will climb as high as a small building before sliding back down the other end. Like many of the events in these races, the mental factor can be the difference in completing an obstacle and opting out.

Heights are a major fear of many individuals and conquering your fears to defeat Goliath will have you feeling like David as you slide down and chase the next obstacle.
