I am glad that somebody else uses ice cubes. I wrap the cubes in a cloth so the cube isn't such a shock to the anus area. The itching seems go away, but only temporarily. The only problem is that the cube eventually melts and the itching begins again. The itching only happens at night. I also love coffee, but I have had the itching stop for a period of time and then come back while still drinking the same amount of coffee the entire period of time.

I had horrible itching for like a year and a half (I'm a male, in decent shape, almost 40). It was really starting to stress me out and was something that was taking up way too much of my thoughts. It was itching, bleeding, just horrible. I tried everything short of surgery, but I finally cobbled together the treatments of three different doctors (colo-rectal, gastroenterologist, dermatologist ) and after almost two weeks, I'm feeling like a cloud has been lifted. So, there are lots of causes for the itch, but here's what worked for me.

Keep in mind that this was very difficult at first, but now I'm feeling SOOO much better that it was well worth it. By the way, I pretty much started all these things at once and was extremely disciplined - I had to get my life back together, it was that bad. I don't know if it was any one thing or not, but the combination worked.

1. Change diet
2. Stop trauma during BM
3. Pramosone E cream (twice per day)
4. Anucort suppositories (twice per day for two weeks)
5. Nightly bath with Epson salts

1. Changing my diet was by far the hardest, but the one thing that, in retrospect, I am most thankful that I changed. I stopped drinking coffee and sodas. That part was excruciating because I LOVE COFFEE and DIET COKE! I switched to water and herbal tea. I switched from eating hamburgers, Mexican food, BBQ, cheese, and highly processed food to eating a high fiber diet - not quite vegetarian, but definitely cut back on the animal protein. Fiber One cereal is actually really good and even better with some fruit on it. If I go out to eat, I substitute the fries for vegetables or fruit. My wife was great and started to cook meals that catered to my needs - bless her heart. Now, keep in mind, I'm not some hippy dippy herbal medicine spiritual healing type AT ALL. I'm going bow hunting tomorrow for heaven's sake! I'm a red state, meat eating, second and third helpings kind of guy. But seriously, the diet change was the critical component for me. After a week or ten days, you'll stop craving those things you craved before and start getting a taste for water and veggies. Dring lots of water! Did I mention the weight loss? I lost like 5 or 6 pounds in the first two weeks.

2. The diet change is critical because you need to soften your stools or you will just keep traumatizing the rectum. Stop using toilet paper - use baby wipes instead and be gentle, you've got to get things to heal up. I would bring them to work as well should nature call. You must resist the urge to scratch because it will just set you back to square one. For the first four or five days, you're still going to have some itchiness. I found that Benadryl gel worked really well for subduing the itch so I could sleep at night. Everything was much worse at night and in the morning - it put a big damper on my sex life because you're not feeling super-romantic when you all you can think about is how badly you want to tear into your posterior.

3. Pramosone is just a steroid cream with some other healing ointment in it. That took care of the external itch in the 3-inch diameter area around my rectum. But, there were a bunch of small tears going up into my rectum and the cream just couldn't fix that.

4. Anucort suppositories are just like a little bullet full of steroid cream. They helped to heal the tears. Caution: there is one side effect to a high-fiber diet that affects the suppositories. Until your body gets used to the fiber, you are going to be really gassy. Should you find yourself really gassy, like at work or something, I suggest you discretely make your way to the bathroom or you are going to blow a greasy mess down your pants. I was fortunate enough to discover this side-effect at home rather than at work where it would have been rather embarrassing. Take precautions, seriously! You have been warned!

5. I don't know if the baths really helped a lot or not, but it was something that was recommended and it actually felt really nice and it will help you to gently cleanse the area. Now I understand why women love baths so much.

Honest to God, I don't think that medicine alone would have made a lick of difference. I had already used a bunch of steroid creams without success before I put everything together.

The diet is the key. Trust me!
Good luck!
Be strong!
Get well!!

This seems to be working for me. While probably not the "cure" to the cause of the itch it is certainly a huge relief! Genius! Do glad I stumbled upon this post!

It really sounds like pinworms to me also. My daughter has had them at least 10 times and your husband's symptooms are exactly what she describes.

Hey guys, I just thought i'd let everyone know what worked for me....i went to two normal GP's and the creams they gave me never worked....perhaps made the itching worse. I went to a bowel specialist and he told me the normal GP's had given me creams that were not appropriate...he gave me a cream called "Sulgan N hämorridal- sable" (It's a swiss medication as im living in switzerland). I used it for two weeks along with a very milk soap to clean myself, alcohol and scent free baby wipes and plain white toilet paper when going to the toilet. So far so good! no itching at all for about a month. So happy!!

I suffered with this problem for 16 years. First it was once in a while, and it progressively got worse and more often. I was always uncomfortable; constantly keeping my eyes out for a discreet place to scratch and have some relief. Eventually it got so bad that it kept me up at night. The numerous things I’ve tried to help it have not worked, and some have exacerbated the problem significantly. In particular, I’d been prescribed Balneol by a reputable proctologist which resulted in a rash developing in that entire area. I’ve also tried over the counter creams that have perhaps helped in the beginning but quickly stopped working. I’ve now have had the itching under control for one year. It requires ongoing maintenance, but it works.

1)      Use water instead of toilet paper (a bidet conveniently accomplishes this. I purchased one that is not expensive and easy to install. You can find it here:

You can use toilet paper to tap the area dry once it is clean.

2)      After each stool, clean the anal area with apple cider vinegar using a cotton ball. At the beginning especially, you may feel some burning for up to 30 seconds. As you begin healing, it will be less uncomfortable.

3)      Keep the anal area lubricated using Vaseline.
