I just had my gallbladder removed 2 days ago. I started feeling the pain in my back - right side, by the shoulder blade (not the top, but in my back) again and was really worried. I'm hoping the "phantom pain" I'm reading about will go away and I won't have to deal with it for the rest of my life. But I do want to share that prior to having the surgery I stumbled upon something that actually helped ease the pain. Pamprin Maximum Strength. Blue box. Not pink. I've often had bloating issues and pamprin maximum strength was the only thing that helped me. When I started having gallbladder attacks, I didn't know it was my gall bladder - I thought it was my back. So I was taking muscle relaxers and ibuprofen and all sorts of things to no avail. One day I decided to try the pamprin and my God it helped! The additional ingredients are a diuretic and an antihistamine, of all things. But it works. So... I'm feeling better that the pain I'm feeling is phantom - worse that it may not go away - but at least there is an OTC that helps. I'll always keep Pamprin Maximum Strength on me at all times! (I should get paid by them to say that!)

Hello, hoping someone out there has some reason for having broken glass type feeling in my left breast after gall bladder surgery. Surgeon has no explanation. feels injured, and gradually went away, but breast just does not feel right.

That's exactly what I'm having ... broken glass feeling in left breast, plus awful awful dull all over back ache. which started about 10 days after the gall bladder was removed. Then the belly button site got badly infected, and I'm just not feeling "right"

Hi everyone,

I was misdiagnosed 3 years ago as having costochondritis. After talking with my chiropractor and having acupuncture done i was told to get a ultrasound on my gall bladder. It was discovered that i had gallstones and that my gall bladder was severely infected. A week later on my 20th birthday i had my gall bladder removed. It has been 5 months since the surgery and i'm still feeling the pain. Though i have had a scope done and it was found that i am celiac. Often times since we don't have our gall bladders we aren't able to digest certain foods anymore, like my situation. Celiac doesn't always show symptoms right away or at all such as my case. Since i have cut out gluten my phantom pains have gone away. Though on the odd occasion when i decide i'm craving something with gluten in it i will feel that same sharp pain between 10 mins - 2 days after i have it. This just depends on how long my body takes to process it. I highly suggest cutting out all gluten products and try that out for a few months it may help.

Sometimes the easiest thing is the healthiest thing

I had my gallbladder removed in 2007. I was 24 yrs old. Ive had gallstones since i was 14. I was so glad that i finally decided to remove it due to constant attacks. But i developed other problems after; heartburn, reflux, diarrhea, right shoulder pain (only when i walk for more than 10min at a time) and phantom right shoulder blade pain that comes and goes. All of the problems i developed after does not compare to how painful the gallbladder attacks were so im still glad i had it removed. But when the pain in my right shoulder blade starts, i get scared thinking im gonna have another gallbladder attack but then i have to remind myself that i dont have a gallbladder and the pain now is not nearly as painful as when i had a gallbladder. For the heartburn, i just finihed a 1 month course of prevacid daily and so far that seems to have worked. Diarrhea seemed to have gotten a lil better but now its acting up again. I have no idea why i still get right shoulder pain cuz after all these yrs the gas is definitely outta my body. When i mention it to dr's they just think im crazy. So getting your gallbladder removed can be a good thing but it comes with side effects that we may need to live with for the rest of our lives. I'd still go ahead with the surgery cuz the side effects are not as bad as having those awful attacks. Your liver still makes bile but it doesnt get stored so it spills into your intestines so tou can still develop stones which can be the reason we are still having pain but its inconclusive so im still trying to do more research..

I had this pain upon waking up from gall bladder removal surgery. I felt like there was knife in my back. The pain lessened but then there was a constant back ache. It took 2 or 3 months for it to completely go away. A neighbor that also had gall bladder removed said the pain in the back on her right side or kind of mid back went away after three months for her. I don't think it was a gall stone left over like some people are saying, I'm pretty sure this pain (feels like a constant pulled muscle or throb and can get more intense somedays) is your inside healing from the trama of the surgery. i would also believe that it's the phantom gall bladder pain. Whatever it is just be patient and in a few months it will fade away. (I realize this post is old but this may be helpful for others experiencing the same thing).

Have you tried altering your diet to reduce the side effects? I have to carefully watch my fat intake or I would get side effects of diarrhea and gas etc. after my surgery I went 1 1/2 months eating little to no fat. It was extremely helpful and then I eased into eating more fat. I highly recommend this for anyone out there recovering from surgery. now I can eat almost everything I want but I have noticed if I go out to a restaurant or eat a very high fat meal I will get looser stools and diarrhea.
About your shoulder, you may want to see a chiropractor or physical therapist and try a good massage focused around the area. That surgery may have tweaked something inside and they may help you to fix it. Yeah air really shouldn't be able to last this long but then again I had a helium balloon I got for a birthday and I loved it when I was a kid and it held air for over 5 years (it was the small kind tied tightly to a balloon stick) i realize that thats completely different from a human body but maybe you do still have air bubbles or something.
I'd seek help for the shoulder pain from a physical therapist if you aren't getting help from your dr. Try a chiropractor, get a deep tissue massage, and eat a lower fat diet for a few weeks and see if any of these things help your shoulder pain.

Hi, I had my gallbladder out in 2005 due to some tiny gallstones.  I have had pain ever since the surgery.  I get pain in my right upper abdomen and it goes thru to my back on the right side.  It's very annoying.  I have had numerous CT scans, Ultrasounds, and MRI's which show NOTHING.  It's kinda scary because I'm worried they might be missing something.  I don't havec any other symptoms except GERD.  Very frustrating.  It's  a dull nagging pain which never gets too bad...but once in awhile it's sharp pains that shoot thru the area and they are very uncomfortable.

Hi there, I found myself reading these messages because I'm experiencing pain in my right mid back approx. where my right kidney is located. In your message you explained the reason for the Phantom pains thus your bile duct still being attached. I had bilary dyskinesia where my gallbladder wasn't functioning properly because the sphincter wasn't shooting out the bile properly and no gallstones were present... an(other reason why it took 3 physicians 7 months to figure out what was wrong). so all of it was taken. Which makes me question why the cycle back to being in pain?

i had my gallbladder removed two weeks ago and it has been a horrible, painful experience as I got so very sick on pain meds that I didn't take them. Christmas Day was only 9 days since my surgery and was the first good day I had since the surgery. I have been doing OK since and thought things were progressing/healing properly. Earlier today the mid back and right side (liver area as well) started bothering me and it has been very intense for the past two hours. I am not sure what is going on, but the pain is very intense. I have had a heating pad on for the past two hours but not much relief. Does any one know what this can be...if feels muscular...intense cramping of muscles or spasms. What could this be? I will call my doctor tomorrow.
