Just found this site as I'm sitting at the computer trying not to focus on my pain. I just had a hysterectomy and a tummy tuck 6 days ago. I have never been so uncomfortable or in pain in my life. I spend quite a few of my time crying. What hurts the most is my back. I have lower back issues that nobody has figured out why, but since the surgery I'm having a hard time finding a comfortable position and the back pain gets worse. Some people tell me not to overdo it and some people say try and go about your day and don't stay in bed. Jeez, I don't know where the middle is. MY draininage tubes are the second worse of it all. I hate them. They are in the way and something is always rubbing up against it. I even think one of them has stopped working. They are supposed to come out tomorrow or Tuesday. When should I start feeling better? One lady said she was at the doctor's office a week later all done up hair and all. I do good getting a shower every day and brushing my teeth. I don't see the end of the tunnel and feel like c**p. Any words of wisdom here would help.

You may not be aware of it but your severe backache could be coming from hysterectomy procedure and not tummy tuck. My mother had total hysterectomy 2 years ago and she also experienced low back pain. I suppose it was because she started moving and being too active too soon after the surgery.
When everything started happening, I did a little bit of research and I realized she was not the only one. There were so many women that had the exact same low back pain following hysterectomies.
One woman even wrote that her doctor said it might happen but all of these women were really worried as they had severe back pains. My mom had it for like 4 weeks when it finally started subsiding. Her pain wasn’t disabling but it was uncomfortable, as if hysterectomy at the age 44 wasn’t uncomfortable enough.

Anyway, I read something interesting, about a woman contracting CES after having hysterectomy done. She was also suffering from very severe back pain and had to undergo additional surgery. CES stands for Cauda Equina Syndrome and represents a compression and damage of nerve roots (cauda equina) at the lower end of the spinal cord. The disorder is rare but when it happens, it is considered a surgical emergency as it can cause permanent paralysis, impaired bladder and/or bowel control, loss of sexual sensation, etc.

So, it doesn’t mean that you will develop this syndrome if you have back pain following hysterectomy but you could ask to have x-rays done if you haven’t already.

I had crippling lower back pain after my hysterectomy. I had a vaginal procedure. A friend of mine who is a nurse confirmed my suspicion that my legs were position over my head in order for them to do the procedure more easily. They pulled and strained all of my lower back muscles. When you are under, Doctor are very rough and often treat the patient like a piece of meat with no regard for the aftermath for the patient. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi,
I had a hysterectomy in feb 08, and since then I am in severe pain in the lower part of my back.
I wake up every morning in pain and that is the way it will be all day. I opted for an epidural for pain as I was told the pain relief would be a lot better,,,,, but it wasn't and for some reason I am putting the back pain down to this!!!
I also have bad pain down both my legs and like one writer I also have a very red and tender scar and tummy.
Nobody tells us of all these side effects and it's not right!!!!!!!!!!

Hi I had a radical Hsterectomy one year ago, and I to had the very bad back pain. The pain took about 3 month to start to feel better, but even today I get a lot of back pain which I never had before the hysterectomy. Every time I am up to clean I have to stop after about 15 min to rest my back. No One can tell me why my back started hurting after the surgery. I hope you fell better soon.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy 1 year ago today. I woke up in the recovery room complaining of lower back pian also. I still have the back pain. I can not stand in one place for more than 10 min without the back pain. House work is equally tough. My doctor told me that the surgery had nothing to do with my back pain, I was 26yrs old and in good shape. Go figure huh?

I am experiencing severe low back pain after my lap. assisted vaginal hyster ectomy and abdominoplasty four days ago. I feel really good excepting this back pain which gets me down. What helps? I've tried heat, ice, pain med, and antiinflammatories. Anything else?

I, too, never had back pain until after my hysterectomy over a year ago..never not once! I worked at a grocery store a few months following my surgery and figured standing on a hard surface was the cause, but it didn't make sense because I was in excellent physical condition..it wasn't until I really started thinking about it that I realized the pain surfaced after my surgery..I've been to physical therapy with no results..I've had cat scans that determined I had a 'slight' bulged disk in my L-4 L-5..I told the Dr. there was nothing 'slight' about my back pain and he has now ordered a MRI..so hopefully this will be more helpful in determining what's going on..I'm only 43 and I can't imagine having this pain indefinitely!

:'( :'( To all of you, I am so sorry to learn of your ongoing experiences in regards to this topic. I underwent a hysterectomy in December of last year and immediately after being discharged I suffered from extreme back pain. Weeks went into months before I realized that the pain had worn off. What brought me to this site tonight is that a church friend underwent surgery two weeks after I did. She sailed through her recovery period with minimal to no problems but is now subjected to excruciating back pain. In an effort to be helpful, I volunteered to search the internet for answers/remedies; I had no idea through my search that I would discover so many women in this together.

I had a tremendous amount of support and many prayers; I offer my prayers to all of you.

Take care,

Judy

I too have the same problem. May 12 I had a Total Laprascopic Robot assisted hysterectomy. Yes a robot... the DaVinci. Anyway. I seemed to have sailed through the surgery with minimal discomfort. Although I had sharp pain when trying to pass gas or a stool. 4 days after surgery was re-admitted to the hospital with excruciating back pain. Nobody can explain it. was there for 4 days and sent home on anti-inflamatories and pain meds. yesterday noticed a difference in pain level from excruciating to very uncomfortable. I am an Labor/ Delivery RN and we have Hyst. pts on our floor. Have never heard any of the dr's mention this. I asked about being in a deep trendelenberg position (almost upside down) for the surgery, and the doctors say it's not related. (????) Who knows???

I had a DaVinci Robotics hysterectomy on 9/15/09 and since that time I have been in excruciating pain in my lower/middle back, hips, and pelvic. I have NEVER had back pain like this before. I cannot do anything. I have pain when sitting, standing, and lying down. My doctor does not believe the pain is from the surgery but I know it is. I am in so much pain tonight that I had to get up so I could see if other women were having pain after hysterectomy. Does anyone know what could be done? I thought that with all I have been through prior to the hysterectomy, I would begin to feel better but I am in excruciating pain...nothing works for me...anti-inflammitories, pain meds, muscle relaxers, nothing. I am so depressed.

I had a radical hysterectomy almost 2 years ago and have suffered ever since with low back ache. My Doctor says it is nothing to do with the surgery and that it could be my stomach muscles putting stress on my back as like most people you are cut twice and this causes the muscles to lose their tone. However excercise for the stomach just makes it worse. Help!!! :-(

I took it easy the first week, probably did too much the second and third week, and now at the end of week 3 and now week 4, my back is killing me. i have never had back pain before in my life. I dont understand, but will be talking to my doctor soon. i just hope it goes away. I do feel better after seeing how many other women have had this type of pain. unreal.

I had a lap hysterectomy on June 2, 2010. I was in so much pain and ran fever with it days after. I spent a week in the hospital and they still don't know why I had the fever or why I still have the low back pain. They assumed it was kidney issues but they checked out fine. They keep saying I am doing to much and need to rest more. I have a 22 month old... not an easy task. I find laying still hurting more than when I stand for long periods. I am off of pain meds so that I can function but I live on Ibuprophen. I will say a prayer for all the others here and I hope we can all see days without this pain. I almost regret having this surgery :-(
