I had Mirena for 3 years and had it taken out yesterday after experiencing EVERY side effect! I am 27 and loved the idea of hassle free birth control. I already have 3 kids so I felt 5 years was a good gap. I had it put in after I had my youngest kid and gained ALL of my baby weight back in no time at all! I have very high blood pressure and my skin looks like I just entered puberty. I tried for a year to get it removed my former ob/gyn wouldnt do it. I however wasnt taking no for an answer and found a new doctor. Last week he ran blood work and I received the results yesterday and my hormones were out of control. Thank goodness he was able to take it out. I feel like I just gave birth though. I hate Mirena! ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed **

I have had my Mirena since 2008 and recently had it removed on Tuesday of this week. I started my period after intercourse the next day and filled regular size tampons in less than 2 hours. The next day, the bleeding became more and more heavy. I switched to Super and began to fill those in less than 1 hr. Bleeding profusely, no cramping bloating or any PMS, just large amounts of blood. Then lastnight I slowed down to almost nothing, this morning the dam was left open and I bled through super tampons in less than 30 minutes. I just used the bathroom and to my suprise three golf ball size clots. WOAH! So I called OBGYN, she is calling me in some meds to slow down the bleeding. FYI, there is a medicine out there for this sort of thing. THANK GOODNESS, don't think I could do this for a month like someone up top posted. This is ridiculously crazy! The things women do to prevent issues they are having, I think from now on I will just let mother nature handle it all. I will never do this to my body again. EVER

i had a very similar experience. i had my mirena in for 10 days (which was 10 days or pure hell) and i suffered with constant bleeding or spotting and severe stomach cramps and shooting painsin my legs. when i told my GYN that i wanted to have it removed i was made to feel stupid and weak as their response was always 'give it time this is a really good device'. thank god i was strong minded and pushed to have this dreadful thing removed.
after it was removed i had light bleeding for 1 day and for the next 5 days i was bleeding uncontrollably changing my pads every 2-3 hrs which left me feeling miserable and depressed. but i am pleased to say that on last day it just came to a sudden stop! which made me feel so much better instantly
i hate the mirena and would NEVER do that to my body again!

I AM MISERABLE! I had my Mirena removed on Thursday, I started bleeding literally as soon as I left the dr's office, and now I've bleeding thru a super tampon and pad, within 2hrs. I don't know how long this will last, so as a pre-emptive strike, I'm going to start supplementing w/iron, vitamin C and b-12 vitamins. What a way to bring in the New Year!!! :'(

I a very worried as I am going to have my Mirena removed in just a few weeks as I have had it for almost 5 years. I am not sure that I want to have a new one placed at this time. I know that you can have the replacement done at the same time. I had the worst periods before hand and now I am worried about the after effect and the removal side effects. The only problem I had in the last 5 years was ovarian cysts. However, I have had the same pains since I can remember. For all I now I could have had the cyst troubles for my entire life. I know that ovarian cysts can be a side effect of the Mirena. I guess I will soon find out what is best for me. I am not sure that I want to have a new Mirena placed but I will continue the search for answers before my appointment. I don't want any more children and I am really hoping to have surgery to remove my uterus so that I don't have all the troubles that I have had for some 20 years. Only time will tell. Good luck to all you women out here with the Mirena. With my over all experience, I would recommend the Mirena.

I've had The Mirena inb for 1 month-it sucks, I'd rather have my severe cramps back and my personality the waY IT WAS! My Dr assured me my moods would not be effected- flat out lie! I asked if he was certain, being a hormone treatment & all- Liar I'm at the end of my tether with all this extra pain, the depression is intense. I'm a mother & work in the body art industry. Pre -Mirena I was in pain most of the time, but I could still function at work- My job doesn't mix with depression & anxiety- which I've never had before. I want it out NOW, don't care if i'm in pain for the reast of my life, I can deal with that- but not mixed with all this other c**p Mirena has caused- seems to be some cash cow for Drs. If men had these problems, they'd all get a week or 2 off work every month or these problems would be solved.
Now I've got the joys of mega bleeding for who knows how long, probably accompanied by pain. Before the pain humbled me- Now with Mirena- I'm a pshyco b***h that cris at the drop of a hat. I wish all you ladies the best of luck & hopeefully this rant helps ohter women make a better choice :-)

Yea, I agree! I will never do this to my body again!!!!!!!!!! I had mirena inserted on Monday, and by that same friday, I was doubled over having severe pain shooting through my ovaries. Not to mention the out lashes (mood swings) I had on my boyfriend and in front of my 3 year old baby girl!!!!! I went to the er (because my doc was on VACATION) This all happened within FOUR days of having it inserted! So I went to the ER and they were going to send me home with PAIN MEDS. and I refused I wanted it out immediately! That same day my pain dissapeared and my moodswings are GONE! But I am filling a pad an hour and after reading I am starting to get worried!

I have had the mirena for about 4 1/2 years. I have ethier spotted or lightly bleed the whole time. For about the past 3 weeks I have gone from spotting to light bleeding to a heavy flow. I am so annoyed with this stupid thing, so I am having it removed on Thursday. I don't know if this is normal once you get to the end of the 5 years but I can't take it any longer. I got it because I had very heavy painful periods not because I want to bleed for weeks straight. I am amazed at how many huge side effects this iud has. Does anybody know if the 3 weeks of bleeding is normal at the end of the time frame? I appreciate any feedback!!! Thanks

Just figured I'd post this had the mirena put in about 2 weeks after having my second son (they are 15 months apart) got the mirena because I'm allergic to latex and I get sick off of estrogens and raise your hand if you can remember to swallow the mini pill at the same time each day... hmm you neither huh? So, I think great stick this thing in and have a few cramps after maybe no period either great. So I had the thing put in and had some mild cramps but sex hurt my husband is well endowed so if he fully went inside he was hitting my cervex and pushing the thing into the walls of my uterus my hair started falling out by the handful and i was so exausted all the time and now bleeding alot and cramping too my midwife says be patient your body is readjusting to it so i did and the hair loss did stop i got my period maybe every other month and had no weight gain however i was still tired all the time and was losing my sex drive little by little because i know that 90% of the time having sex would hurt me a couple of nights ago I cried and i begged my husband to let me take it out I couldnt stand it anymore it had been 10 months since i got the mirena put in I couldnt even enjoy the simple pleasure of being intimate with my husband without feeling like i was getting stabbed in the uterus he finaly agreed that i could so i went to the bathtub washed up and pulled the little sucker out slowly after wards i was shaking all over but there was already a noticible difference in the way i felt i hadn't even realized that my uterus was hurting the entire time i had it in not just during sex as soon as it was out the pain stopped for 2 days after i felt leaky first clear then pinkish liquid started periodicly gushing from me felt and smelled like amniotic fluids then yesterday the bleeding started along with mild but persistant cramps that feel like back labor im using my kids cloth diapers to catch the mess I just cant wait for this to stop and i will not recommend mirena to anyone not that our stories will happen to them because sometimes they wont but its too big of a chance that bad very bad and worse things will happen to anyone who gets this devise I'd rather never have sex again than get that torture devise replaced and i love sex anyone who reads this and wants to know more liame me at moc.oohay(at)024u4lrigad

I just had my mirena expelled after a couple of exciting nights...and I'm glad its out. If the heavy bleeding and passing huge clots don't let up I think I'm going to the emergency room. I rather swallow a pill everyday than to deal with this uncomfortable IUD. And to think of how horrible the first months were there is no way i would put myself through that again.

I had the Mirena in for only 3 months and it was absolutely awful. I bled the entire time and had horrible cramps. I got it out last week and finally called my doctor after a week of heavy bleeding. She prescribed Medroxyprogesterone for me and I'm hoping it will help. I've only been taking it for 24 hours and there isn't a noticeable difference yet, but I'm praying it works soon. I will never suggest the Mirena to anyone. I wouldn't wish the past few months on even my worst enemy.

I had the Mirena for 3 1/2 years and I thought it was the answer to my prayers. I have 3 kids and 2 step children in the house and my husband and I are not ready to have another or know if we even want another child. I also had severe cramping and very heavy bleeding while on my cycle. I loved it for a while, but now, I am proud to say I got my Mirena removed three days ago! After having cysts, mood swings, weight gain, constant cramping and having pregnancy symptoms, IT'S GONE!!! The deal breaker was when after 3 years of not having a cycle, I started to bleed for no reason and when my GYN tried to check the strings I almost jumped off the table because my cirvex was extremely inflamed and tender. She suggested that I have the IUD removed after I finished the antibiotics. SO... Tuesday I went in prepared for my GYN to say I would have to have it by dialating my cervix or something since she never found the strings; however, after about 10 minutes of painful brushing and searching for the strings, she blindly used some long skinny forecepts and yanked... actually taking it out was not painful at all. I bled lightly for about a day and a half which I expected and then it stopped. Now 3 days later I am bleeding and clotting like a stuck pig... not to mention cramping horribly. Is this considered my first cycle? Should I start the pills that my GYN perscribed?

:O I am so thankful I found this site and thank you all for sharing. I had my Mirena removed 8 days ago after having it for 4 1/2 years. I had mini periods rarely while I had it. (Which was nice compared to how my periods used to be.) The day after removal I started bleeding and passed one of the biggest clots I can ever remember seeing. This has been going on for a week, and like a few others mentioned, it seems to be getting worse. Probably my favorite part of having the Mirena removed was experiencing what I thought was a UTI and finding out from my Dr. that I have Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). I researched it and one of the causes of BV is having an IUD. Oh, by the way, my favorite part of having the Mirena would be gaining 45lbs! XD (Sorry just a little sarcasm!)
I wish Doctors would give a little more insight to the side affects of not only having it in, but also the nightmare after having it removed.
