thank you ladies! I have the same problems so ditto...I had my Mirena removed and asked the doctor what kind of side effects can I expect to see after the removal and he told me none...so I don't want to waste a trip and who knows how much money to ask him what is wrong with me to be told he doesn't know...or go through a bunch of costly tests. It sounds like I just have to "go with the flow" and hope it ends soon. I'm taking iron and vitamins because of the blood loss but I really doubt there's anything that they can do to stop the bleeding and nature has to take its course. Also having IBS and clotting after removal. Just want to say I'm very dissapointed in the Mirena..had it for a year and was always spotting, darkish bad smelling blood...almost like it takes too long to shed (your lining) so it stays in your uterus too long kind of thing. I'm no doctor, but that's my guess. It started to get worse, and smell was a better contraception than the actual Mirena itself. Hope you all get better...will try the red raspberry tea so thanks for the help...

Glad to find this topic and know other have this trouble too.. still a bit worried and thinking about the ER right now. Had the Mirena put in as a last ditch before ablation or partial hysterechtomy (they wouldn't consider either option till I tried this first *grrr*). Had it in for 3 months, and had terrible experience- 3 solid months of bleeding, nausea, pain, dizzy spells, and discovered that it affected things round about- the constant pain and so on caused my blood pressure to go up, I kept getting infections that I never dealt with before that (and which have gone away now in just teh 3 days since I had it out!!), the pain and infections played havoc with my diabetes making it 3 months of sheer heck to control my sugars.
Now 3 days after having it taken out, because I was in so much pain, I was told that it was coming out on its own, my body was trying to expel it, and dialating, etc. Ugh!! As if thats not bad enough the bleeding is getting worse- soaked a new pad AND tampon in 1/2 hr, and when I went to get new again it poured into the toilet . If I try a kegel tightening the blood pours again, enough to soak through the toilet paper quickly. (pardon the bluntness there, but I hope it helps if anyone else has these symptoms). If this keeps up tonight I am on my way to the closest ER. The cramps suck big time, but that's not new. Just scared about the volume of blood.. I read anything over 24 pads in a day I should call the gyno, but at this rate 48 pads and 48 tampons in a day will be absolutely RIDICULOUS!!
Time for another round of pain meds and another pad replacement *sigh*
It might work for lots of people but in my case this was the worst birth control/way to try to control my menses EVER, and I have been on every kind out there trying to help the pain and bleeding. Hysterechtomy here I come! Please!

I had mine removed October 4th, 2011. My doc told me to expect heavier mucus, some bleeding, and to watch for signs of infection. My husband I needed to abstain for a week after removal.
What my doc did not tell me that "heavier mucus" is more like your vagina has the flu! Have you ever felt like your vag sneezed all over you?! I have. No issue with abstaining the first week doc. Who wants to have sex with a snot rag?
Then came the cramps. Boy did they ever come.
I feel like I have to defend my level of pain tolerance before I continue. I worked an 8 hour shift in 2009 with a ruptured appendix before being convinced to have surgery (not because I'm stupid, I was getting married and had a dress appointment the next day.... OK I'm stupid.). Even my gyno has told me my pain tolerance is too high and I need to listen to my body more. My point is, I can take it.
Back to the cramps. They started about 3 days after removal. Not too bad the first day. I actually had forgotten what cramps felt like and though I had gas or something. The next day brought on the clots and I realized I was actually having a period. By the end of my day I was going to go to the hospital. I curled up on my couch with a heating pad and cried. It was an ibuprofen and vodka kinda night. I did not go to the hospital.
The pain subsided the next day and even more the next.
October 13th, 2011: Everything seemed fine. Back to "normal" even. I figured I got off easy. The following week I spent in Las Vegas. Lot's of drinking, unprotected sex (with my husband), woohoo!
Came back to reality Oct 21st, 2011: That night.... some light spotting.
October 22nd, 2011: A moderate period and some clots. Lot's of small ones. Changing tampons every 3 hours.
Sunday October 23rd, 2011: I wanted to die yesterday! The only thing that helped was moving around. Lot's of moving. Walking, running, anything. I spent ALL day in the kitchen cooking pies, and pasta, desserts, homemade everything (Martha can suck it). Why? It helped to move. It only hurts when you stand still.
TODAY October 24th, 2011: As I type this have to stop and take a deep breath every so often. These cramps are kicking my ass. All I want to do is go to bed and sleep but laying down doesn't help. I feel like a butchered cow. I'm so tired and so weak. I'm nauseous. I drank a Rockstar and ate some food. All I want is protein. I am craving a tuna fish sandwich or egg salad or a really, REALLY rare steak. I always crave protein when I have my period but this is out of control. I had tuna out of the can for breakfast. I feel like some kind of a protein vampire! Hubby is getting steak for dinner whether he wants it or not. With a side of boiled eggs and tuna salad. LOTS of spinach. He will be lucky if I even cook the damn thing.
I believe my uterus is a) extremely pissed off and getting revenge, b) cleaning house. After 4 years of almost zero (I was one of the lucky ones) periods it has to clear away the cobwebs (metaphorically speaking).
I'm going to give myself another hour, take a hot shower and call my doc just to confirm what I (we) are experiencing is normal.
Hang in there Ladies!
