HELLO PEOPLE IN SEPTEMBER I WOULD HAVE HAD THE MIRENA IN FOR 5 YEARS, BUT I HAD IT REMOVED ABOUT A WEEK AGO BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO HAVE A BABY. AT FIRST I SPOTTED FOR A FEW MINUTES THAT DAY, THEN IT STOPPED, AND STARTED AGAIN IN ABOUT 24 HOURS. SO ON FRIDAY ME AND MY HUSBAND HAD SEX AND BOUT 3 HOURS I SPOTTED BUT SENT THEN NOTHING. I NEVER HAD ANY PAIN DURING OR AFTER. I LOVED IT THE WHOLE TIME. BUT EVERYBODY BODIES ARE DIFFERENT AND WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT REACTION. THE ONLY THING I DIDNT LIKE WAS HAIR LOSS AND WEIGH GAIN.

I have had no troubles with my IUD and I have had it for four years. I love that I don't have all the troubles that I have had in the past but now that I think about it I have had hair loss for some time now. I have not gained weight, in fact I have lost almost 55 pounds in the last three years. I now wonder if the hair loss is related to this IUD..
I am going to check with my doctor and I have planned to replace my IUD next year as is will be 5 years. I have only benefited for this IUD. It is sad to hear some many women have not have a good experience but as you said everyone is different.

I just have to chime in on the other comments. I had the Mirena removed 2 1/2 weeks ago and yesterday I notice heavy bleeding. Now just to let you know I've never experienced heavy cycles before the Mirena, except for after giving birth. I had the Mirena in for 3 years and to be honest I had no problems as far as bleeding except for hair loss etc. This is getting crazy though because it's non stop. Every two hours I'm changing. I'm now my doctor. Thanks for the comments ladies it really helped me understand that I'm not alone in this matter. Thank you!

Go to the doctor immediately if you are having very large clotting.  This could be serious and you need to seek medical attention.  I have the Mirena in right now, have had it for about 5 weeks, am going to the doctor this afternoon to get it removed.  I have gained 7 pounds, my hair is falling out by the handfuls, bloating and cramping all the time, and haven't stopped bleeding since they put it in. Totally ridiculous and miserable!  I think it is more than 1 in 5 women, but when you think about it, that is a lot of women!  good luck

I went to the health dept. today to have my iud removed (expires 5/31/11). The Dr. couldn't find the strings. She suggested I go get an ultrasound to make sure it's still there, then take it from there. I just felt them last night, so I know it's still in me. Until today, I've had no issues. Now I'm bleeding and having the worst cramps in my life. Does it go away? I still have that blasted thing in me. What should I do next?

If you want to remove it, I suggest you see your OBGYN as it has been in for some time.  You need to do your research and look it to possible attachment to the uterian wall and scare tissues.

I had Mirena inserted in dec of 05 and had it replaced again in 2010. I had it removed 10 days ago the 6th of may due to nausea at night. I had no problems until I had the new one put in. Since having it removed I only had about three days worth of slight bleeding not heavy at all. Since the fourth day I have not had any bleeding. I think every woman is different and all have different things happen. Keep your heads high. It will all get better. :)

Let me first start off by saying that I have endometriosis; which is why I went on the IUD to begin with.  If you don't know about endometriosis, I must tell you that it is extremely painful and there are many complications and symptoms with it.  The IUD was to create a false sense of pregnancy; which helps the endometriosis to be less active.

I have to say that after being on the Mirena for 4-5 months, my cramps got a lot better, the bleeding basically stopped and I was able to function more normally during my so called period.  I had the Mirena installed for 5 years.  While on the IUD (over the 5 years) I slowly added 60 lbs to my body, I began getting migraines more frequently, my hair texture changed, my skin became more acne prone, I felt tired all the time and found it VERY hard to sleep.  Funny thing is, I never attributed any of the symptoms above to the IUD as I had an extremely stressful job and anything was better than the suffering of the Endometriosis I had experienced previously.

I had my MIRENA taken out nearly 2 months ago.  While I must say that I feel a lot better with it out and my headaches have basically gone away, I have been bleeding for the entire time it has been out.  Sometimes the clotting is extreme, the flow is worrisome in that it seems like a lot of blood.  I am wondering if any other people have experienced bleeding for this long?  I am getting to the point were the clots are causing a lot of pain and it is very haunting of the pain I experienced previously with my endometriosis.

I am just curious how long your bleeding lasted after removal?

I had mine Mirena removed on 5/6/11 and I'm still bleeding. It seems no one can tell for how long it will last. I'm tired of it and don't know what to do. I don't want to take another hormones to stop it as suggested by the doctor... but it seems it will never stop...

OK, Answering to the question when the bleeding stopped. I had my Mirena removed on 5/6/11. The bleeding stopped on 5/27/11 without any medication. So it continued for 3 weeks. I hope it helps.
