Wow, I am really concerned here.  I am due to get my Mirena changed in January, 2012 when my 5 years will be up.  About two weeks ago, my husband and I were having sex and when we were done, I noticed we got some blood on the sheets.  This was weird because I haven't had any bleeding or periods for about two and a half years.  Understand that the whole reason I got the Mirena was to stop the everyday bleeding I was having from who knows what soon after my now 8 year old son was born.  I couldn't take the bleeding anymore after he was about 2 years old.  I was bleeding constantly and never knew when a period was beginning or ending!  After several tests and ultrasound and no answers, my Doctor told me that "some women just bleed" and had recommended Mirena and made it sound like heaven!  Well after 5 to 6 months of cramping and bleeding misery and me hating my doctor for making my bleeding problem worse, the bleeding finally did subside and occassionally would appear after sex.  So even though it's been a couple of years since I have seen any blood or got a period, I didn't freak out when I saw the blood on the sheets after sex with my husband two weeks ago.  Well last evening, my husband and I were having sex and there was blood on the sheets again needless to say.  I went to the bathroom to clean up only to feel something hanging out of my vagina.  That something was the Mirena!  It became dislodged after 4 and a half years!!!!!  I AM FREAKING OUT!!  It was just hanging there!  My husband didn't feel anything and we weren't having rough sex or jumping from the chandeliers or anything either, just the usual.  Has anyone had Mirena expell after being intact for this many years?  I am worrying about pregnancy and about how in the world this happened!   All I can think of is that it must have been loose and expelling couple of weeks ago and our sex last night just helped it come out completely.  I haven't checked the strings in forever either since I haven't had a period.  I actually was enjoying the fact that I didn't have to think about my birth control and forgetting that it's even there!  Has this happened to anyone after this long?!?!?!

I too removed my IUD myself 10 days ago, it didn't hurt & I had no problems the first 2 days. since day 3 I have been bleeding very very heavy, soaking through pads every hour and bleeding through my clothes while asleep. I have also been experiencing very large clots & I'm always thirsty. I have graves disease and is take synthroid after having a total thyroidectomy a year ago. I also take paxil for depression & anxieties, so I thought that could be the cause of the abnormal bleeding but after reading some of these post I'm not so sure. Because of my pre-existing medical problems should I be concerned?

Me and my hun decided we wanted to have baby #3, since I have 2 and he has none. Well I have had my IUD since 2007, I never experienced any issues. I am always moody and I never noticed any other possible issues to be concerned about. A few months after having my IUD (mirena) I could no longer feel the strings so I became concerned and I called the doctor. Of course they check and everything was ok. Well 6/23/2011 I went back to the doctor to discuss removal, after checking they informed me my mirena was out of place and that the strings were lower than usual-referred me to a doctor for a ultrasound to see if it was out of place and recommenced I use condoms because I was at risk of getting pregnant.
So I go home and feel around and I was surprised my strings were darn near hanging out and I was spotting. So I called the doctor the next day and they made a appointment for the next week. Well I googled issues that can occur with a misplace IUD and I seen some information about UTI and other possible infections so the idea of waiting to the next week didnt sit well with me. So I went home 6/24/2011 (Friday) and took a seat on my toilet and started pulling it out ( I know I am crazy and I am thankful no major damage was done) I started slow first and no major discomfort so I continued for another few seconds and before I knew it, it was OUT!! No blood no discomfort no nothing..I did feel a little happier and more excited about intercourse with my sexolic husband. By Sun 6/26/2011 I started bleeding HEAVY..but that isnt uncommon for my periods I bled heavy before mirena so by 7/7/2011 it stopped. Unable to figure out when my ovulation begins, we have had intercourse everyday since...hopefully soon we will have baby # 3

Come on girls. Don't be silly. You should never take something like removing a contraceptive imbedded into your cervix out alone. That just sounds ludacris. You could have ripped something in there and maybe that is why you are in so much pain. If you don't have insurance go to planned parenthood they will take care of you free of charge. Just tell them you make less then 600 a month or something silly like that. They will not turn you away regardless. I came on here wondering when my hormone levels would go back to normal because I just had my Mirena removed less then an hour ago. Hopefully I don't go through a horriffic expperience like some of thesse women. I was diagnosed with Postpartum depression and was still having symptoms of hormonal imbalance and issues with not being able to lose the weight I gained from my medication and since Mirena have even gained more. The the light bulb went off and ralized I had hormones going into my bosy daily with this thing so I am hoping now that it is out things will go back to normal and all this healthy eating and excersize might actually make a difference. Good luck to all of you and maybe put updates on here letting the resst of us now how your horror stories ended. Good luck to you all and Mirena is the devil >;)

Ok ladies, I removed my IUD on Tuesday 7/19/2011 morning.  I have had spotting since then and the cramps are come and go.  I called my OBGYN to see about going on the pill.  I have had a history of cysts with my IUD that I have had for 4 1/2 years.  But the reason that I had the IUD in the first place was because of very heavy periods at 23 days straight.  Either way, I was instructed to come into the office in the next week to have an exam to make sure that the IUD didn't tear any tissue and that nothing was left behind.  I am sure that the entire IUD came out but I am going in any ways.  Going on the pill will stop the cysts but the intense clotting will still be present.  I have been try for years to have a partial hysto. However, the answer is always NO because of my age. I will update my post as time goes by as I know the "flood gates" are about to open.  The next few weeks will consist of the diet of aspirin, heating pad and a high iron diet.

I am glad to hear you are doing well.  I am not sure if this is any relation to your experience, but for the last two days I could swear that I am Pregnant.  HOWEVER, I know for a fact that I am not.  Breast are tender and strange cramping feeling.  I WISH YOU the BEST of luck on your mission.  I for one am not looking to have another baby and I have made sure that there is NO chance of my symptoms being baby related.  KEEP in touch and once again good luck.

Mirena has been one of the worst experiences of my life.  Before getting it, I researched and knew some of the possible risks and side effects.  But I chalked it up to "well most birth control has side effects."  I just thought I would be okay and it would be convenient to not have to worry about birth control or condoms until my husband is done with school.  WRONG!  First off: Insertion painful....cramping after painful.  Then the moodiness and sort of "mental fog/depression" came on about a month into having it.  Tired ALL THE TIME. I am normally an energizer bunny, work-out feened.  I was taking 4 hour naps in the afternoon, snapping at my four year old daughter.  Skin breaking out.  Worst of all was NO SEX DRIVE.  My husband and I were only married a month and he wondered what was wrong.  Finally, I realized after about 3 months of having it in, feeling like i was slowly going mad....that it had to come out.  NOW!  And of course I could not get in to get it removed until 4 weeks later...because my doctor [who pushed me extremely into getting it saying "i would love it and have no problems"] was on pregnancy leave.  Really?  Thanks doc.  Shove one of these up your vagina and see how you fair!  I realize now that a lot of doctors do not practice for the right reasons and don't genuinely care for the welfare of their patients.  A lot of them are out for the $$$MONEY$$$.  So one hopeless night I began crying to my husband [i had been continually for the past 3 days] that i needed to get it out...that i felt crazy.  He looked things up online and saw many woman took it out themselves.  So being the "go-getter" that he is said "we are taking it out now."  After continuous attempts at grabbing the slippery strings, I thought he had pulled it out [it was hurting me and causing cramping when he pulled it].  He got a hold of the strings again and said he felt a STRONG IMPRESSION to not pull.  By then I was crying and scared, and he was too.  He then decided to call the hospital where his father used to deliver baby's [his father is a retired OB/GYN doc].  He called labor and delivery, and told the nurse he was Doctor ____________'s son and asked to speak to the doc on call.  The female doctor got on, of course knew him [his father practiced for a long time and was in Arizona's top 200 best doctor's mag.]  He told her I was having problems with my mirena and if we could come over to her at the hospital and have it removed.  Long story short...went over....she removed it. [my husband had pulled it from my uterus to my cervix].  Well, no ER, no charge.  I feel so lucky and grateful.  NOW I AM BLEEDING HEAVIER THAN I EVER HAVE 3 days after removal.  Hope it does not last long.  I am afraid of birth control in general now.  I would rather get pregnant.  =]

there is sooooo many issues with woman and mirena. i am thinking why cant something be done. stop this iud from being placed into any doctors office. all of these terrible things we have gone through because TRUST me i have went through and i am still going through my share if problems due to this c**p!... its almost scary. if they can pull other things off of the shelves then why NOT mirena??... just because 10 out of 100 people dont have problems? they they are the lucky ones!  and if no one has had issues yet and is still on it.. trust me it is to come.. 2 year i had it and 2 years i have had constant lower back pain. awesome not to have a period but really when i think about it... how normal is that?.....   and the straight constant bleeding after removal for weeks.... and blood clots... i feel like im messed up for life!.. im pissed. something needs to be done and FAST

I have looked up numerous webpages to see how long this would last but didn't find a lot of answers to the length of time.  So here is what happened with me...

After having the Mirena removed, it started lightl but that night I started bleeding heavy.  I had clots but nothing bigger than maybe a quarter or so. I bled heavy for almost two weeks.  I am hoping that as of today I have stopped! :)  The mirena worked for birth control, but it threw my hormones off completely.  Mood swings, night sweats, etc.  I also had false pregnancy symptoms, such as actually feeling like a baby was MOVING inside of me. I have been pregnant-and given birth 3 times, I know what that feels like!
