I had Bunion surgery done by an Orthopaedic Specialist great Surgeon. The left foot had four toes done , a large Bunion on the outside of my big toe. No problems healed extremely well. Two months later I had a bunion done on the right foot. I still have the wrap for a couple more week's. In the last two weeks my Knee and now leg included is giving me a lot of pain. Why.............

I know most people posted on here two years ago but I had bunion surgery two months ago and can tell already that it was definitely worth it. Find a good doctor. The surgery wasn't as big of a deal as I feared it would be, I only took painkillers for one day and then once a week later when I pushed myself too far. It's not easy wearing a boot for a month and it takes a while to recover but I think it will definitely be worthwhile. I had some nerve loss but 90% of it has already come back. I think it's crazy that people put off/don't get surgery and opt for a lifetime of pain. With any surgery there are risks, but just remember that 90% of people commenting on blogs have either had a great experience or a horrible experience--don't put too much weight on those who have had bad experiences--while I sympathize a great deal, the truth is that they are in the statistical minority.

I had my left foot operated on last October (scarf bunion op) and experienced very little pain, so I decided to have the right foot done and the pain I have experienced since the operation 3 days ago is terrible. White hot shafts of pain shooting up my big toe and the top of the toe feeling like someone has sliced it in two, coupled with sharp pins and needles. I never thought I could experience this type of pain and from what I have read on online sites it seems to be caused by nerve damage. None of the medication that was given to me on leaving the hospital is of any use, the best is the paracetamol which reduces the pain to a bearable degree. I am due to go and see the consultant tomorrow and get the dressings changed. I hope to get some answers and hopefully some decent pain relief then.

An update to my last post.......
Today I visited the specialist who operated on me. It transpires that I had a nerve block whilst under general anesethic and this nerve block was incorrectly placed so the nerves it was meant to numb are 'live' and other nerves which affect the movement of the foot have been numbed, so I cannot move the foot without moving the leg, and if I try to move the foot I experience acute pain. All I can suggest to anyone thinking of having this type of operation is to reject the nerve block in favour of a local anesethic whilst under the general anesethic. I would not like anyone to go through the pain that I am experiencing.

i was 15 when i got my surgery done. its been exactly a year. my scar was raised and purple, appearently my doctor said i was allergic to the materials he used so he did surgery on the scar, its still purple & it kills me. i feel like there is fluid in my big toe. i left my doctor& i am looking for a new one. yes i am very young for having this surgery& it looks 100 times better then it did, just it feels 100 times worse. so it all depends how bad the bunion is and how well you go through pain. get a good doctor & make friends with him before he does your surgery. i dont trust many doctors and i sure as heck did not trust this one.

Me too. I had a lapidus bunionectomy 8 weeks ago and I am having severe nerve damage pain. In addition, the scab that forms down the incision site has healed except for a spot at the bottom of the incisiion site. This is the area from which all the burning and pins and needles eminates. I asked my Podiatrist Surgeon, Board Certified, all sorts of Podiatric designations with the American Podiatric Association and whatever else "what caused the nerve damage" and he said "I DON'T KNOW"! Really??? I think I might ask again and if I get the same answer, I'm going to suggest he find out so we can FIX it. It's awful and I can't imagine how I'll ever be able to ever walk right again!

It depends on the doctor & in the scare location. I was very dumb and I chose an inexperience greedy that wanted to make money as fast as possible. She damaged my nerves, yes nerves, more than one. i have seen more experienced doctors and I finally a male doctor told me that the locations of the scare was a big problem besides the bad doctor. So ask about the scare location it was to be on top not on the side right along the nerve. Please choose a experience doctor with a conservative approach & tell him that you don't want the scare "hidden" on the side. If he is a good doctor the scare will be unnoticeable.

I too regret my surgery. After losing my job and a divorce, while I had good insurance, this was my chance to control something which would better myself. I went to a top surgeon. My right foot ( the good one) is a Frankenstein foot with nerve damage and pain every waking and sleeping moment. There are no promises - I did everything right and regret it.

Before my surgery, my bunions were so awful and incredibly large, and painful. Every shoe hurt, and I just learned to live with it until age 32 I was fed up. What a horrible decision. The cast and crutches and scar were a breeze, it was starting to walk on the foot that made me realize that my life would never be the same. I have severe pain in areas I did not before. My big toe does not touch the ground, forcing my ankle to bear my wieght. Walking is miserable. My ankle hurts so bad I can hardly think about anything else. My other toes try to grip the ground when I walk. I limp around in agony, and my doc said to give it more time since its only been about 5 months. I know my body. This does not need more time. Something is terribly wrong and I wish I could go back to my painful bunions. At least I could sleep off the pain or massage it. Now nothing helps. Anyone else have a big toe that stick up? HELP!

It is sad to hear how many people get worst after foot surgeries. I have been in so much pain for 2 years now, and my podiatrist kept telling me, like a damage record, that everything was perfectly fine. Of course, she made a mess and I am the one suffering not her, she already got her money, who cares now?
Now, I have to have a second surgery and I am gonna need a screw, obviously, another doctor is gonna perform the surgery to try to fix the problem.
You need to see the best doctor you can possible fine now, average doctors cannot get it right, they need to practice & need feet like yours and mine to get it right one day.
Please advice all your friends about the dangers of podiatrist.

HOW DO YOU FIND A GOOD PODIATRIST? I THOUGHT I HAD ONE, BUT HE WASN'T. HE SHOULD HAVE DONE SURGERY ON MY BUNION AND THE NEXT THREE TOES, SINCE I HAD HAMMER TOES, BUT HE ONLY DID THE THE TWO TOES NEXT TO MY BIG TOE, WHICH CAUSES MUCH DISCOMFORT, AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. IT STILL PAINS IN MY BIG TOE. THIS WAS ALMOST THREE YEARS AGO.

i had bunion surgery one in 10 and another in 2012 and i now have pain in both feet i tried propping them, ortho socks and i get minor releif but it seems its getting worse, i talke to my podiastrist about the pain but he gets in a defensive mood and says "well its not because of the surgery: which pisses me off because he's not explaining why both not one of my feet are in so much pain

Hi I am not an expert on bunion surgery, however, I had the surgery, I must say due to the nerve damage I got post surgery I can only stand up to 5 hours on my foot per day. It has changed my life. Before surgery I could stand up to 10 hours. I wish I never did the surgery. Now I am considering changing my career. WOW that is profound. If you are considering surgery do more research.
