Should I wait for the pain of my anus to go away to do this. I had bad constipation last night and was in so much pain.

Yes it can. The tears can cause severe burning spasms. You must keep BMs soft! Mirilax, or magnesium can help. Fissures take a very long time to heal. H Fissure oil is helpful too.

I have suffered from a fissure for several years on and off. The pain is intollerable. My advice, after BM use balls of cotton wool run under a very hot tap, squeeze out excess water and place on area to relive pain and clean. A cream called rectogesic can be used, but DO NOT use as much as it states on the packaging (it will give you a headache) use only 1cm, then wipe off what is on outside with the above cotton wool balls.

The other thing, with a persistant fissure that will not heal, try Clotrimazole cream (used for Thrush or Jock inch sold under tradename Canesten in UK), put it 'right up' on the infected area. This will clean out fungus that often seems to grow after a spell of having a fissure. The first time I discovered this I thought I was in heaven- after suffering for months I used a big splodge of the cream, came and sat down and physically felt my swelling going down and the pain easing! It was wonderful, pure ecstasy. The fissure then went!

I'm really not sure about giving myself an enerma with saline- it sounds painful- the pain is bad enough... I think the internal use of the creams helps by providing a barrier.

Mine seems to be related to bad diet (when I get lazy and eat too many take aways and not enough greens/ fruit), also to stress, that can bring it on, as can some viruses. I think it's just something that will reoccur throughout your life from time to time. So find your way to deal with it. From what I've read surgery does not work. But the good news is when I get a bout now I can usually either nip it in the bud with the above treatment or it generally goes within a few days.

Having a bout now- I got lazy and have a virus/tummy bug :-(  But it's the first time for about a year and a half, and it's going :-)

Lastly, try and relax when the pain is high- I know this is hard, but the sphincter goes into spasm (from the pain I guess), this just adds to the misery... try and relax it, use the cream to help lubricate it... then when you are finished lay down and relax for a minute.

I hope this helps some of you x

I've had this for 14 months. I've seen 6 Doctors and said I had an itchy, butning bottom (anus). One of the first told me I had Pruritus Ani...and said "try this", then all the rest confirmed the diagnosis and said, "here, try this". Then I looked up the translation for 'pruritus ani' and..............you guessed it.......it means "itchy anus". All the Doctors were doing was parroting back to me in Latin what I told them. I now am now convinced that the old saying "50% of Doctors are below average" is absolutely true...and i have the worst luck in the world to be able to find 6 in a row.

Now - back to the subject. After one damages the skin at that tender place it takes time to heal - but that process is confounded because it is re-damaged at each bowel movement. Due to the fact that the skin is damaged and sensitive it now becomes sensitive to normal 'poop'...AND...mucus from the anus as well as that produced by 'roids'.

First - buy a hand spray unit and hook it up to the water supply on the toilet. The cold water feels great and helps with the 'burn'

Second and most important. - even the slightest bit of poo left inside or outside the anal ring might burn. This has to be removed. The outside with the spray (and pat dry) and the inside by:

Get some thin medical rubber gloves and vaseline.

Wearing a glove, smear some around the anal ring.
Take 3/4 wraps of toilet paper to make a pad - slightly moisten a spot on the pad with WARM water and, using the middle finger, against the pad, insert about 1-2 cm of wet pad INSIDE the anus. Be gentle. Remove and discard. Repeat until all signs of 'brown' are gone.

The warm pad will feel wonderful and the removal of any residual poo will cause the 'burn' to cease quickly...and stay away.

Repeat when needed.

My burn is now gone for 4 months although I still have 'roids' on occasion as well as a fissure that continues to heal and return. My nights are trouble free (no pain or itch).

Sounds like you need to increase your fiber intake. You'd be surprised how many Americans do not eat enough fiber. Try meta-meusel tablets or powder. 1 tablespoon or 1 capsule once a day for 2 weeks. Epson salt baths and hydrocortisone cream can ease discomfort. For the cream, this is only for external irritations. Do not squirt it up your ass!

I had a really bad hemi and this regimen seemed to do the trick. Also, certain foods cause burning stools. Try and figure out what in your diet could be causing it.
