all this reading about iuds falling out makes me wanna ask a question im hoping get an answer to, thankyou
when my 4th child was born, aged about 6months i was still breastfeeding and not getting periods still, i got an iud copper put in by my gyno
it was all good for a month,, then i got about 4 days of what felt like labour contractions, i was a bit w2orried but the pain wasnt constant, it came and went, like contractions,, on day 4 my period arrived, very heavy, i was still getting those random contraction pains, and i even had clots
lying on the couch i felt like i was dying and i felt like a was prickly dont there, like i could have a rash???, lol,,,, i go toilet to realise the prickly sensation is my iud, already out,, im freaking out,,, but have a shower, and within a week my periods gone and im back to normal
that was nearly 2 yrs ago,, me and my husband only have sex with a condom on,, but we r sick of condoms and sometimes cant be bothered in getting one on we just sleep and miss sex,,lol
i havent thought about getting another iud till today as im thinking by reading all this that maybe my iud fell out cos i was breastfeeding,,, im not breastfeeding anymore, ,, are chances of another falling out high?,, what do u reckon?

Yes the Mirena can fall out. And yes it makes you gain a lot of weight and you always always crave sweets. Just last night I was in so much pain. I went to the bathroom and wiped myself and there it was in the toilet paper cover in something like a blood clot...sorry if that TMI but falling out is very possible. It wasn't that painful but this morning as I type this I feel like I'm having contractions that are 10x worse that labor pains. Its so bad that I'm thinking of going to the ER.

I have the 10 yr. IUD and I have had it in for the past 6 yrs. now. I am a little scared at this point b/c my baby is 6yrs. old and I can not nor can my husband find the string nor the iud inside of me. Bummer~ o.O It did not cross my mind that it may be missing except I have been feeling extremely nauses for the past week. Thought maybe it was a virus, but with most virus' the nausesness only stays around for about a day or two. Really scared and about to make an appt. will follow up to let you all know if the iud in general really falls out on it's own undetected. Also, only have a sweet tooth when that time of the month comes around. My ten yr. IUD has no medicine in it, just made of copper which keeps the spermicides from entering inside of my cervix. The only discomfort is my husband hits it once in a while >:( , but he quickly learned how not to, and my periods are between 7-10 days, and a little more cramping. Even there has been a mishap, I love the IUD and don't remember any pain associated with getting it in or after it was in! 8-| I guess lucky me huh! I don't hear much about the 10 yr. IUD any more so unsure if it is still a method being used. XD

well upon reading all these reviews it makes me more nervous. i got my mirena iud when my baby was 6 weeks and she is now 7 1/2 months. i have been achy, crabby, nausated, had horrible headaches, cramping, tired all the time, slight weight gain, and eating all the time like the weirdest things. All of these have happened recently. Then last night i was taking a long hot bath after a long day at work and i was checking my string (which i could barely feel before) and i could feel them and the lower part of my mirena. which makes me horribly nervous. i dont know what to do. and i cant go to the doctors bc i have no insurance at the moment. im totally freaking out. i love my kids dearly but with my youngest two being exactally 20 months apart i do not want another baby right now; its to soon. im not sure if the mirena is coming out or what. bc im high risk for having it anyway, bc i have a tilted utures. i have had a lot of times where i can feel the mirena poking me. and it hurts horribly. i want to get it removed. but want to see it the pain all passes. hmmm??? i loved it and was fine with it until about 2 months ago? ? 8-|

I had the mirena a while back. But i got it taken out bc i had a bunch of cists forming on my ovaries. I've never heard of the mirena falling out bc its placed in there pretty tight. But the poking is most likely from the strings my husband and i had the same problem and it got to where we had to stop having sex until i got the wires cut back bc it was uncomforatable for my husband. As for it falling out im not sure but my biggest fear was it sinking into my uterus bc that has happened alot to people and it had caused death. But my suggestion to you is to get the wires cut a little bit shorter not to short bc you need to feel the wires when you check. But as for it falling out you shoulnt worried about it to much!!!!

My opinion is go get checked out bc it is possible for the mirena to sink into your uterus i had the mirena and i started having side affects like vomiting, aches, multiple cists on my ovaries so i researched and it is possible for it to sink into your insides so you should get checked out soon asap!!!!!!!!!

I had my mirena for 20 months. I didn't have a period for the first year, then I started having one regularly every month. It fell out on it's own last month and I started having pregnancy symptoms. I went to the dr last week and I'm not pregnant but I have PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) which can give you pregnancy symptoms. The PID was caused by the mirena, it's a very common side effect. It will always come back and can cause infertility and increase your risks of tubal pregnancy in the future. I am in horrible pain from this and it was all caused by the mirena. I gained about 60lbs in the time I had the mirena and I got horrible acne. I'm glad it's gone, it was horrible. The worst part of PID is the 2 antibiotics you have to take are $175 and $45. Luckily I have great insurance and I only pay a fraction of that, but it is still a lot to pay every time the PID comes back. Everyone beware of mirena, there are a lot of symptoms I wasn't informed of and now I will have to suffer with PID for the rest of my life: Thanks Mirena!

I had the mirena in for 1 1/2 months. I have had cramping after and sharp pain along with spotting. Then I stopped spotting for a while and then started back up again. One day I thought I had started my period and was three day into it. Last night I went to the bathroom and to change and when I looked the IUD came out with my tampon. Now I have to call the doctor and see what I have to do. :'(

My IUD fell out THIS morning. I stumbled across this website looking up information. Me and my boyfriend had sex last night, and the string this morning was out all the way. I started bleeding, and went to the hospital. She didnt have to look far, because if I were to tug on it, just a tiny bit, it would come out. She said they are made to come out, and that It will not cause any damage, but they look just in case. I also had to have a pregnancy test, and it tested negative. This is absurd. I think this needs major remodeling, if someone were to get pregnant on the Mirena, the possibility of having a miscarriage is huge, and baby may have complications. Mind you I am no doctor, and am giving no medical advice. Just speaking from my terrifying experience. They will offer the morning after pill afterwards, and this causes nausea and cramping, and she also told me that tying my tubes is a better idea.

Hi I had the Marina inserted in Sept 2009. It wasn't painful at all. I have had a regular period every month plus spotting in between them. I was told that it can take up to seven months before you stop having a period. My periods were regular same time every month. Jan 2010 I started on the 23 and stopped on Feb 3. Then I started again on the 8th and its has been very heavy. This evening when I went to the washroom I thought it was a clot I was passing but when I looked there was the Marina in the toilet. I guess that is why my period was so heavy. I will call my doc in the morning and let you know what goes on from here. I did have 10lb weight gain and craved sweets also. Also have had sore arm muscles since November not sure if it has anything to do with it or not.

How deep should in put my finger in before I feel the string? Will it be an obvious feel of sting?

I had the Mirena IUD for nearly 5 years. It works like a dream. And I'm extremely fertile with 3 children and no problems conceiving. So I KNOW it works.
It just came out tonight in an unusually large clot. Since the clot was unusually large I checked it and saw something that looked like a string and some white. So I examined it more closely suspecting that it was the Mirena and sure enough, there it was completely in tact. So I'll be calling my Dr. to have a new one inserted. I suspected it would happen since it's almost time for it to be changed anyway.
Mirena works great. Much better than the pill because the hormones are so much lower and you don't have to think about it. I love Mirena!
I think those of you who had problems with it coming out early should check a few things:
1.Your Dr. may not have inserted it correctly;
2.If you've never had children, this may be something to consider since it was designed for women who've had kids (at least that's who they promote it to);
3.If you have a toxic diet & lifestyle (lots of processed food, white sugar, white flour, soda, etc.) your body may be weaker in handling "foreign objects";
4. Also, if you've gained weight - sugar cravings happen from vitamin deficiency. Usually B vitamins which means you're not getting enough whole grains. And by "whole grains" I mean WHOLE - brown rice, barley, quinoa, amaranth, spelt, REAL whole wheat from the health food store.
If you have a toxic diet you can easily gain weight and experience cravings. Just remember that cravings are an indicator of vitamin deficiency and you need to balance out your diet. Go organic and get a good nutrionist (alternative) who can get you on some good vitamins.
These are just thoughts and I'm not a doctor, but my experience with Mirena has been exceptional so I thought I'd share these as they may help.
