All of those symptoms (painful swallowing, burning, chest heaviness, feeling like food is stuck in throat; you don't have to have heartburn) sound like GERD (gastroesophageal REFLUX disease). That is where the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus is weak and stomach acid is irritating and sometimes damaging your esophagus.
Alcohol, cigarettes, spicy/acidy/fried/fatty/caffeinated foods/drink make it worse. An OTC med like tums/zantac/pepcid/prevacid/pepto will help with that.

Not to scare everyone but all the symptoms that are being described on this thread are symptoms of a potentially deadly illness called Alcoholic cardiomyopathy . I'm a male 29 years not long out of the army and generally fit and healthy . I used to drink heavily most weekends and did so for a few years and during the week after a good drink I had most of these symptoms . I visited numerous doctors , had bloods and everything done and was also told it was anxiety . Anyway 2 weeks ago I had a very bad episode which I thought was an anxiety attack and ended up in hospital , Turns out I have Alcoholic cardiomyopathy which can eventually lead to heart failure . All caused by drink and have never even suffered from anxiety . I urge people to Not take for granted that your symptoms are anxiety I did and look where that got me

Wow, sorry to hear that man. I did have that fear when looking up what the hell might be wrong with me. I woke up yesterday with minor chest pain and shortness of breath. It's much better today so I'm not worried to much about it. I did see the Alcoholic cardiomyopathy. Alcohol has been fun, but breathing is a lot more enjoyable.

Also to guests who are reading this just like me, you gotta look at what a lot of people are saying, "Oh yeah I've had this happen for a few years, but after a few days I could breathe normally again, and then I was back in action with drinking." If that's not a f*****g wake up call, I don't know what is.

You might be allergic to caffeine. I have that too. Mine is a result of nerve damage I incurred while drinking. Peripheral neuropathy. I noticed one day I couldn't do caffeinated coffee anymore and then years later I couldn't do decaf. I have the same symptoms as you. You feel short of breath and feel like you're gonna faint but the doctor says your oxygen levels are great.

I was taken away in an ambulance today after a night of heavy drinking. I woke up gasping for air with my heart beating out of my chest. after being awake for a while I started getting worked up thinking about it, coupled with the hangover, and ended up getting hit with a sudden, intense wave of chest pain, blood rushing to head, dizzy, panicing like crazy, and I called 911. Once i was surrounded by emts i slowly calmed down over half an hour. Ive had all the symptoms listed here many times before, and like many of you, i thought the having to manually breathe was the scariest part. Doctor said i was fine and it was either alcohol withdrawal or a panic attack, maybe a combination. One thing I haven't seen you guys mention that I noticed; Its at the absolute worst when i eat a large meal at night (i get very hungry when i drink). The heart works extra hard to digest while sleeping, and still more so when sleeping while drunk. THIS CAN KILL YOU. I used to drink like crazy, lately ive been drinking like crazy only 3 or 4 days a week instead of 7, and i know what its like, so i won't tell anyone to quit drinking if they are not ready to make that change in their life, but never get wasted and NEVER get wasted and eat a large meal. if you get drunk, get moderately drunk, drink a bottle of water, eat a small snack, and go to sleep. Do it in moderation. Today i poured the better part of a handle down the sink, threw my smokes in the trash, and i dont plan on touching my energy drinks for a long time. I'm sure i'll miss the liquor here and there, but I won't when i think about today, sitting there waiting for ems thinking I was going to die. It is very comforting seeing all of you guys sharing your stories, I went home still very worried after the doctor said it was nothing major, but seeing this pretty much confirmed what i thought, that alcohol was what was causing these breathing problems that i often have. btw, to anyone that got these symptoms, quit drinking, but still have breathing trouble, go to the gym, it works wonders.

It sounds like drinking and smoking have given you a form of COPD or Emphysema which can cause that feeling. If you go without drinking and smoking and up your cardio daily (meaning stay focused with your routine) you can recover and start feeling better. The body is amazing and heals effectively but one night out and it will ruin all of your work. I used to be an alcoholic. Stay focused and start feeling good :)

I also have had these symptoms and thought I was going to have a heart attack. Its from a mild form of alcohol poisoning. Smoking cigs on top of it causes the worst onset of symptoms. I have been a heavy smoker and moderate drinker for years. Its time for a change. Glutathione deficiency: This antioxidant is found in the lungs. Since drinking alcohol lowers your body's glutathione levels, it can aggravate your COPD symptoms and cause a flare-up. Decreased lung function: Chronic alcohol consumption is associated with decreasing lung function in patients with lung disease.

Pickle Juice helps for the hangover salts thing. I am in the same boat and plan on completely quitting drinking. I think I had a mild heart attack and survived, that's how bad my chest pain was from my nasty hangover. Drinking just isn't worth it.

Hello, I recently went on a two-week drinking binge (beer and hard liquor mostly). I started feeling like I had something in my throat the day after the binge had ended and ultimately started feeling chest pain and tightness. I am also experiencing symptoms of acid reflux (and taking medication for that).

I have started to research what this could be as it has been two days since I experienced my first symptoms and I still havent regained my appetite and chest is still tight.

I am narrowed the options down to GERD/acid reflux or Holiday Heart Syndrome. I am going to the doctor tomorrow again (first time they told me to take medicine for heartburn).

How long did the symptoms last for you guys? I will not continue drinking after this as this has not been a pleasant experience. Also, how did you help make the symptoms disappear? Should I go for a walk or just relax at home?

Thank you everyone!
