Hello all. I just wanted to say thanks to the person that mentioned going to the dentist. I'm in the process of ruling out dental issues as a culprit, so it may be awhile before I know if this can be fixed by a dentist. In the meantime, I'll share what I know in the hope that someone else may benefit from the information.
My story is the same as yours: sore throat for over a year, aches and pains, swollen lymph nodes on both sides of my throat, and numerous trips to the doctors office. Over the past year I've had the flu twice, a cold twice, strep throat for the first time ever, bronchitus, and the list goes on and on. I had a full physical with bloodwork that came back normal. I finally asked my doctor if she thought I was stalking her! I had to blatently point out that I was in her office every week before she suggested an immunology panel. The results came back the evening before I started back to school; it showed that I have some kind of blood disorder. She referred me to the Kansas City Cancer Center. I'm now awaiting the results of this last round of blood tests. My biggest fear isn't that I have Leukemia. . . no, my biggest fear is that the blood tests will come back normal and I'll be right back at square one. What to do when you know you're sick but the doctors can't find anything. Yep, that's the worst pain.

I cant believe its not just me~ yay im not going physco like my parents are always telling me. Im 16 and I've had it for probably nearly 2 yrs. The person who said they had a lump in front of their ear first I DID TOOO!! its got big and purple like and doctor said it was swollen lymphnoids or watever they are. It would come and go there but it didnt really annoy me that much. UNTIL i startedgeting a constant sore throat and it makes me tired and im constantly feeling my glands and trying to stretch my neck or something for the pain to go away. I alwaysss get sick too. I am a proffessional swimmer and its been really hard to deal with. So i decided to get my tonsils out cuz no-one cud figure out wat it was and its been 2 months and ive already gotten a cold and my throat is still sore. I just dont know what to do now and i need a cure badly!!!

Well... I'm not sure at all, but looks like I have something similar and I've been on a raging quest to find out what I've got. I'm a vocalist/singer and I had just been getting into recording and pursuing my career when all of this happened.
A while back, probably a month ago, I was just getting over being sick and I was coughing up all of the nasty stuff and feeling much better. One day, I noticed that I was singing flat in a very odd way. I'm very familiar with my voice, and... well, this is hard to explain... I would be singing a note that felt right in the larynx but would come out flat. It's as if I had to sing half a step higher than normal to hit the notes I was trying to hit. Before all of this, I could have headphones on and generally just feel where the notes would properly be - not speaking in terms of vibration but in terms of how stretched the vocal chords needed to be. It seemed like I now had to stretch them just a bit further to hit the notes desired. In testing it further, I found that almost half of my vocal register was gone. If I tried to sing higher, it wasn't like vocal nodules where my voice would crack to a whisper - it was as if there was a vocal governor, keeping me from going higher than a certain note. My vocal chords could tighten all they wanted, but it wasn't going past that note. Trying to do so felt like I was flexing my neck muscles and tongue to the point of pain.
Another thing I noticed was that the higher I went in pitch and the closer I got to that new limit, it felt like my throat would close up. It kind of felt like my vocal chords would hit a lump. I also noticed that when I swallowed, it didn't hurt, but it felt as if the left side of my throat was numb. This was combined with the sensation that there was something like phlegm back there that needed to be cleared out but never could. After analyzing further, it felt like there was a lump on the left side of my throat that was around the same area as the swollen lymph node. Docs gave me antibiotics, but no progress in 10 days. Returned and received a steroid shot. My voice seemed to get a bit better after a while, but only a little bit. I'm still without about half of my upper register and it's been probably a month now. The pain from yawning has gone away but nothing else has. I share the sentiment with one contributor that said that life seemed over without the voice. Singing is my life, and I really wanted it to be my livelihood. It's caused so much depression every time a song comes on that I can't sing.
Worth mentioning:
Had chest pains around the sternum and saw an ENT for that - got diagnosed with esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus) and the doc gave me a script for acid reflux. Reading this thread, I found an article that discussed two forms of acid reflux. Something mentioned a hiatal hernia and I am almost POSITIVE that is what I had considering the pain, but I'm no doctor.
I'm concerned that I might have throat cancer due to HPV-16 transmission via oral sex. My girlfriend recently got a call noting that she tested positive for HPV, and HPV-16 has been found a strong cause for throat cancer near the tonsils, back of tongue,... well, here is a snip from webmd: "Oropharyngeal cancer occurs in the area beyond the mouth from the base of the tongue to the back of the throat." I'm very concerned this is what it is. Please please PLEASE get this looked at people. I'm going into the doctor next week to talk about this.
Also - HPV ends up affecting around 80% of people at some point in their lifetime. Yes, 80%. A very high percentage of these though are not high risk and are handled by the immune system. HPV can be passed via skin contact and a condom will not protect you from it. Sometimes the symptoms of HPV don't show for over a year. If it is in fact a high risk form such as HPV 16, it can be spread to the throat via oral sex. Risk of throat cancer in individuals that have been in oral sexual contact with an HPV infected person increases 34-fold.
I will post an update once I return from the doc.

I don’t know if all these are the same thing, but they all have to do with the throat and is chronic. I’ve had a similar problem – I started feeling like I have constant flem in my throat, and constrictive feeling when breathing. Went to the GP, did several courses of antibiotics (which didn’t help), have a chest scan which showed nothing. After this I went to an ENT who noticed that I have a very large Adenoid (which in apparently uncommon for a adult), and a badly deviated septum. With the camera he put down my nose into my throat I couldn’t see any flem. So he concluded that what I feel is the adenoid; I went in for an operation where they removed the adenoid and fixed my septum.
Two years later I have the same symptoms – sore throat, feeling of having to clear my throat the who time, pain moves from side to side but mostly sticks to the right side, and accompanying ear ace (it almost feels as though my ear lobe hurts also).
The ENT recons it could be reflux which constantly irritates and burns my throat – initially I responded to treatment for about a week and hasn’t since responded to anti reflux medication, the initially response could have been a fluke.
I’ve been to see a homeopath – which didn’t help, but its because they word with what you tell them, and I think I described it wrong. I have a constant feeling for flem, which I only feel so severely because my throat is inflamed and sore. So she treated my postnasal drip, for which the meds worked. I’ll go back to see her.
I also recently went to an Iridologist who diagnosed me correctly without input from my side – he said that my body is very much infected with bacteria and fungi and gave me a month’s supply of ‘detox’ meds. I’m only in day 5 on the medication now but I will let everybody know if it helps at all. This is in par with other information I’ve gotten on the web relating to chronic throat infections
On days that my throat is particularly bad I’ve noticed a sharp decline in my energy levels, which I assume is just my body taking more strain due to what ever is causing this.
I also busy reading “10 secrets of 100% healthy people” which basically deal with live style (eating habits). Live style is undoubtedly the part is all this (because the body can heal almost anything if it functions well), however most people like us don’t want to hear that if you eat and live a certain way for 5 years you’ll be well – feeling conically ill, in pain and run down is crippling.
I’ve had little luck with treatment but I’ll report back if I find anything that works, so far the Iridologist has been the most impressive, I would recommend giving that a shot.

I have also been going through similar circumstances for about two weeks now. I have experienced a swelling in my throat (mostly on the left side). Along with it, is difficulty swallowing pain and clogging on the left ear, some pain behind my eyes and now in my left cheek.
I had just previously been on a strong anti biotic just three weeks earlier for similar symptoms-only not so bad. Now it has come back much worse than ever. I have had this problem before. It was due to a severe nasal infection that ended up traveling to my through and even effected my voice box. It had made my tonsils and other glands in my neck swell significantly. I have never had it as bad as I do now though.
If it is any consolation to any of you (suffering the same thing), it can sometimes take a few treatments of anti biotics to take care of the circumstances. I also found out that what had caused my nasal infections were mold that I was constantly fighting around the very cheaply insulated windows my landlord had invested in. The mold just by itself (or any other allergy) may cause not only repeated nasal infections that can travel to your throat-it may cause significant swelling in the glands within your neck even without the presence of a nasal infection. Any allergy may cause this en adults and children. Any viral or bacterial infection may cause it as well-this is why it is often difficult to rid yourself of it. If it is an allergy, anti biotics won't work. Finding out whether it is an external or internal (food or drink) allergy is also difficult. It may not be cancer or tonsillitis. It may, or may not be strep or mono. Going through all of the tests is annoying though. It's what I've had to go through and it's a pain in itself. Take time to find out. Make sure you have a doctor that's willing to work with you or your loved one going through this. If they're treating you as though you were a hypochondriac...get a more sensitive doctor! You know if you are feeling pain or not! You know what you are witnessing your loved one go through. Find someone who will not give up on you! That is the frustration I have gone through. Don't let what it could be play on your mind (I had to make a concerted effort with that)...it only helps you look like a hypochondriac to the professionals.
Maybe this is the same you are going through. I hope what I've had to say helps you...I've had quite the 'journey' on this topic...apparently I'm still not finished! ;-)

Hi everyone, do you think this is caused by cancer?
I've heard that some kind of cancer causes sore throat. <maybe nose cancer, maybe throat cancer, not sure>
I found a solution on a Chinese website. Many people were cured using that medicine. My friend will bring me some next month. I will let you guys know whether that medicine works or not.
Hope it works
My throat is killing me, and my ear hurts too.......... :-(

Hi, I had mono last year and I thought maybe this off and on sore throat had something to do with that? I don't want to make this a big deal yet but for like two months my throat has been killing me. I don't know why I keep getting this and it hurts a lot. I also don't want to tell my mom because I don't need her thinking my Mono keeps reappearing, I DO NOT need another lecture. But its killing me, it hurts so bad.

21 y.o. female
That's funny... I also have had general immunity problems after travelling outside of the US to Japan. The sore throat/sore neck puffy nodes started when I was visiting my husband's family in Korea and have not left me ever since for 2 years. Constant trips to multiple G.P.s... despite the fact I've been going steadily to the same G.P. for over ayear now. go to get tested for strep when it feels bad... always negative... always looks inconsequential to the doctor looking at my throat. Will finally go to an ENT... not getting my hopes up but at least I can (hopefully) be clear if it's serious or just something I have to live with.
Turned out I had EBV 2 yrs ago when I got back from Korea.
Many of us are female, and I know I have PCOS... although I'm not classic as I'm not completely overweight and my main problem is not difficulty getting pregnant... more hormonal stuff (fatigue, hot flashes)... vitamin D deficiency...it can contribute to some immune weaknesses.
Cut down on chemical exposures as much as possible... sleep is the only thing that helps but if I go out and try to develop myself (working out for stamina) usually results in puffiness, pain all over again... same for any stressor. Also improves when I have breaks from school. Was fine when I had a week off... as soon as I went back it puffed up again.
been tested for:
HIV (even though I'm monogamous and have 1 healthy husband who hasn't even caught mono from me!)
numerous CBCs...
auto-immune...
metabolic function...
Will keep you posted on what goes down at the ENT...

Just wanted to write a brief description of what has been going on with my throat. In early November 2010, I began to feel an abnormal pain in my throat. I went to the walk in clinic. The doctor their told me that this pain was nothing but maybe a sinus infection and told me to go and buy some advil cold and sinus pills and some saline nasal spray also gargle with salt water...I did all of the above. I then went to go see my family doctor as the pain persisted and my nerves started getting the better of me thinking that this could be something more serious like cancer...my family doctor told me that this was nothing but an infection and gave me zpak antibiotics. I finished the cycle of antibiotics and went to a different walk in clinic. i spoke to a female doctor there and she told me that this was probably due to a post nasal drip...she told me not to worry about this...The pain and lump feeling in my throat were still there...so I went to the emergency dept at my local hospital...I spoke to a doctor there that told me that he strongly feels that this was not cancer and adv that 4 doctors have now explained this to me. So I rode it out a little longer...I then was getting frustrated with the pain so I went back to my family doctor. He looked at me again and said that this is nothing but sent me for blood tests anyways...I went and did the blood test, urine test and EKG. After a few days I went to follow up with him...he advised that their was nothing wrong with me but adv that my liver levels were up a little so he is sending me back for hepatitis a b and c tests as they may have an affect on the liver...I should mention that I have yet to do this test but I will get it done. I was still experiencing pain and felt the lumpish feeling in my throat so I went back the walk in clinic on appleby and dundas...I met with a 5th doctor and he ordered an ultrasound to be done on my thyroid. I set up that appt for Dec 16, 2010 at 3:00pm. On Monday Dec 20, 2010 I followed up with a doctor back at the clinic and he told me that there is no suspicion of cancer but that my thyroid was a little enlarged...he adv that if the pain persists for 2 to 3 weeks that I should go back and follow up with my family doc who should send me to an ent to check with a scope. It's important to note that I quit smoking on November 14, 2010. Today is December the 23, 2010 and I have been having a ruff day with the throat. Today there has been constant pain...I have taken 3-4 advil cold and sinus about two swigs of benilyn mucous and fleghm. A clonazepam and a warm wet cloth. Only minor relief from the pain here and there...happy new year, Jan 1, 2011. I haven't added anything here in about eight days, but over the course of those days I have been experiencing pains still localilized to the one spot in my throat, which I take to be a gland...however I still get frequent shooting pains throughout my throat neck and mouth. I also get frequent headaches...I purchased a big jar of extra strength Tylenol rapid release tabs at walmart with a gift certificate that I got from my mother for Christmas. I have been taking these consistently (2 every 4 hours) for about 4-5 days now. It seems to help a little bit...but not very much, it makes my every day life manageable. Today is January 3, 2011 4:56pm and I just wanted to check in and say that I didn't take any pain medication yesterday or today. The discomfort and shooting pains haven't been so bad. I am praying that this continues. Also wanted to mention a few more things. I have noticed over these past couple of months that my urine has a slighty stronger urine smell to it. For a long time quite possibly a year now I have been experiencing pains in some glands in my back as I believe that this is caused by wearing compression shirts. Quick update...Jan 7, 2010. Throat is starting to feel a little better over the last few days no pain medications although it still acts up and hurts every once in a while. Today is Jan 9, 2011 and I just wanted to give an update on my symptoms... I have been noticing and this has been for a long time now that there is pain in my lower throat localized to one specific lump feeling and the other is in my gland area. I hadn't felt the pain in my lower throat area in a little while so much as I did when I went to shovel snow on Friday early Saturday am Jan 8th 2011. I'm going to get the blood test for my liver and hepatitis done if I can find the sheet otherwise I will have to go back and see my family doctor to get another one. I am going to ask my family doctor to send me to an ent specialist aswell and if he doesn't do it I'm going to ask another doctor to send me. The pain in my back glands gets pretty bad swell, one doctor told me that this was lipoma and not to worry about it. I'm at my family doctor now, Monday Jan 10,2011. I want to get the bloodwork request form and I want to get a referral to an ent...
Please note that the above are notes that I have been making to myself over the duration of these symptoms. I truly believe that we can all overcome this, but we need to follow up with one another. Let's not be selfish if we are feeling better...let's advise what works. Also I think that it would be a good idea to write down things that we may have been eating or doing or wearing or what the weather was like...etc just prior to these symptoms. If we all notice a common denominator it may be trigger. If we know the trigger then we know how to prevent and it could possibly help rectify our symptoms....God bless

Big Slim et al...get your tonsils out, yes even if you're over 60! For the first time in years I have no sore throat, no swollen lymph, no pain when I yawn and no pain in my year. Scoff at surgery? I scoff at folks spending thousands and thousands of dollars (insurance dollars as well) having ct scan, mri, PETscans, barium scans, ultrasounds not to mention office visits and over using antibiotics and pain relievers. I do continue to use FloNase to keep the nasal passage from swelling and I do the saltwater nose rinse. I tell you what, it changed my life. It is nice to know that in the future if I have to have antibiotics odds are my body won't be immune to them! Best of luck folks, and I hope you all find an answer.
