Hi everyone;
I just wanted to add my story. I was a very heavy drinker and had my first severe acute attack of pancreatitus in December '05. I was hospitalized for 12 days and then quit drinking for 6 months. I began to drink again and had three more severe acute attacks over the next few years. There was one in January of '08 where my family was told I had a 50/50 chance to live. I made it through and drank again. I was back in the hospital in March of '08. After that I finally stopped drinking but my condition had turned chronic. Now I deal with severe pain every minute of every day. I haven't been drinking or been hospitalized since March of 2008 but my quality of life has gone down hill. I have had to take 4 to 6 percocet a day since then. I developed a tolerance to the percocet and just this last week my doctor switched me to two 20 mg of oxycontin a day. I find these are pretty good for pain control although the pain never goes away totally and they are very strong and cause me to be very nauseous. I am hoping that will wear off after awhile. I'd just like to thank everyone for sharing their stories. It helps to know there are people out there that understand. No one who hasn't experienced this condition can believe or comprehend how painful it is. Also, if you have this, try to stop drinking! It's hard, I know, but I realize that if I had stopped drinking sooner I might not have to live in pain for the rest of my life. Thanks again.

I should also add that I had my gallbladder removed in June of '06 and had two more severe acute attacks after that. In April of this year I had a celiac access block or "nerve block" to try and deaden the nerves that transmit pain from the pancreas to the brain but I have not noticed any discernible pain reduction from this procedure. That is not to say it might not work for some people, but it did not help me. I guess pain killers are the only option right now. Thanks again.

MY prayers are with you in regards to your personal experiences..I hope you find some relief, that will make your pains stable at least...to help yourself, try to wean off your drinking, and get into a healthy eating regimen..and i know the rest will follow...I reallt feel you can do it..since you have done it in the past, but due to your losses, you started to drink again..so i know that you can quit again...and try to manage your losses and the life changing events not with drinking or eating junk..these are just your ways to cope withh stress and lifetime events that had made your life unbearable..Once you master the art of 'cleansing your body and mind' thru quitting drinking and getting into healthy nutrition, i know your well being will come back to you, and if you are in pain, due to your illnesses, you can be on a program of Dilaudid or fentanyl patch, which are the 2 most strong painkillers with minimal dangers to your body..
Please, do take care of yourself, you can lead a better life, if you do..everything starts with you, and it ends with you..
so, regain courage again, and fight the demons away..to a better quality of life....My prayers go out to you..Have FAITH, IN yourself, and in the higher powers that you believe in, and all will come together for you....

I to was dx with chronic pancreatitus not due to drink, got it from one of my hiv meds. I started getting abdominal pain back in 05 but yhought it was just your normal stomach ache. Then it hit me so hard all the way down my back and the pain excruciating. It cause me to loosetime at work on sseveral occasions till they had to let me go via a company lay off. Even tho I had drs note explaing to them that I would be needing at least 7 days to rest csuse I couldn't really sleep due to the pain. Then hr also found out I was hiv positive so I really think that was the main reason I was on the lay off list. They fisrt gave me vicodin and that only workrd the first couple of months. Lots of hospital & er trips. O now have to take oxy 30mgs been on them for the past 4 yrs and it helps a lot reducing the pain from excruciating to really bad discomfort. (Which I will take over the pain). Last month they put in two stents and they gave me creon, however I still have attacks. It seems that the stents made my daily discomfort turn into daily pain. I am not even able to sleep laying down I have to sit up on my couch turning everyway I can with my heating pad till I find a comfortable position. Is anyone else have to do this? And if so any good positions I might be able to try that will give me some relief for more than 15 to 30 min. Bless you all your stories have been helpful
