oh my god.
i'm so glad i'm not the only one!

i had this discussion with my friend today and she has the same problem too.
we're both 15/16 years of age.

everything feels thick and thin when i put my fingertips together or touching my doona/sheets.
its so freaky, i start crying and yelling and i barely remember what happens the next day.

everytime it happens my parents say its all in my head and i need to see a doctor,
it makes me scared even more when they say that.

does anybody know what this is called?

I'm 15, I've had this since I was 4, its really scary, it only happens to me when I have a fever. Its so great to know that I'm not alone. I never knew what it was, now i do thanks to my friend 'Bloody'. What I have found is that my hands, my fingertips are REALLY painful. The only thing that helps is holding something cold like an orange or an apple from the fridge. It normally happens at night. It lasts not longer than 10 mins, usually, sometimes shorter. Thanks to all the people who commented, i have so much information now. wish I knew what it was though...

Hi my hands and arms used to go like everyone has been describing when I was a kid and had a temperature.
Later in life I got the same feelings of heavy and thin hands when my eyesight used to go all weird when I was driving to work.
From what I've been able to find out it is associated with migraines - especially in children - and is called Micropsia.

I too have had the same sensations, more so as a kid and typically in bed at night. I don't believe it is Micropsia or other sight related problem because it extends beyong that sense and Micro/Macropsia doesn't really seem to fit. When I was a kid i describe it to my parents as 'everything is going fast', and i  remember the thick feeling in my fingers. Nowadays I'd describe it as exagerated and distorted perceptions, but my description as a 5yr old kid was just as good  since it is so difficult to put into words.    I have suffered migraines  with scintillating scotoma since i was a kid, less often now (46yr old). I'd like to know whether or not ppl here are long term migrain sufferers, or least had them as a child.

I came online tonight and Googled "heavy hands" because my 10-year-old complains about this problem from time to time. Sometimes its "light hands". It can cause him to worry. I've noticed he mostly complains about it when in the car or early in the morning when he wakes up.

I had the same thing when I was a kid, when lying in my bed at night. My hands felt huge, heavy, and my tongue also....dry and thick. I also remember when I'd wake up in the middle of the night, I could see the furniture in my room. It looked tiny as if it were so very far away. I'd always reach out to try and touch it, but never could. My room was tiny by the way....We moved to Canada when I was about 10 and I never really had the problem again after that. I wonder if it's generic...would certainly explain the situation with my son. Of my three boys, he is the most like me in many ways.

Same deal. Only as a young child. Woke up feverish several times in my youth, screaming and freaking out because my fingers felt like sticks. No history of abuse, drug use or anything sinister. No problems with my eye sight. Sucks that no one knows what causes this but is reassuring to know that it wasn't all in my head.

So so glad iv found this site i really was begging to think im going crazy! its started last week, i was led on my bed, closed my eyes and all of a sudden it felt like my hands arms and head were getting really really big, of course when i opened my eyes they were fine but closed them again and the same thing happened....it terrafied me! the same thing happened a couple of nights ago i got up went to the loo and led back in bed and again all of a sudden my hands started to feel like they were getting big, it feels so real and it freaks me out so much that it brings on a panic attack, my stomach terns to knots, my mouth terns so dry and i keep trying to swallow, my body terns all cold followed by shivering and twitching, and the general over of fear and of the unknown and loosing your mind. and again the same thing happened last night as i was trying to go to sleep.

Iv had a read of everyones posts here and it is great to know im not alone cos i genuinelly thought i was going crazy, whats worrying me now is that i cant recall this happening to me as a child or a result of some sort of fever or trauma, i also dont get migranes and i wouldnt say i was under a great deal of stress just the usual amount from day to day living so why all of a sudden at the age of nearly 25 iv suddenly developed this weird condition i do no know?! but i will be honest im pertrafied! im thinking about going to my doctors but i fear that they may never of heard about this and will think im crazy and will just put me on some sort of drug or even worse find something seriously wrong with me. Is there any medical answers to this or reasons why we feel like this and how it can just happen?

iv come accros quite alot of forums like this and it does seem to be quite commen and at least we´re not alone but its just frustrating as there doesnt seem to be any answers or reasons why this happens. i dont know if this is something that im now doomed to live with the rest of my life but at the mo its really making me miserable :(

Thanks for reading

I am 34, British, Living in Ukraine,  had the big hands/fingers feeling when I was young, even remember looking at shadows of my hands on the wall and feeling confusion at the feeling that my fingers felt like sausages. Had a stressful few days and couldnt sleep tonight until gone 6am.. just starting to fall asleep and bingo, there it was that weird feeling again so I googled it and hit this site / thread.

Glad I am not alone.

Anyway, being the type of guy I am I looked further, and here is what I think we are all suffering from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_in_Wonderland_syndrome

One strange thing that maybe is just me, is that at first when I was younger it scared me, but after a while I almost found it comforting, pleasant... Like ah that strange feeling again.... nap time...

So Alice in Wonderland Syndrome.... appropriate

I'm from Seattle and I've experienced this "Alice and Wonderland Syndrome" since I can remember. It happened a great deal when I was 5 and younger--often combined with night-terrors. I could sense an incredibly large/heavy mass swinging near me, like a pendulum. It was completely overwhelming, like I was slipping off my bed. For some reason I have one visual memory, an image I imagined in my head to visualize the forces I was feeling and it looked like crappy 3D graphics from the '80s... like checkered planes and spheres floating and rotating around me.

From ages 8 to 17 or so, I experienced the migraines with shimmering weird patterns.

I'm 27 now and I only experience the thick-thin sensations once or twice a year, and it's not overwhelming anymore. I'm curious about it. Most of the time I just get the thick-thin sensation, or the chair I'm sitting on starts to feel incredibly hard--even if it's a soft couch. It felt sort of like my sense of touch wasn't on the surface of my skin anymore, but deeper (which I guess is where the dissociative speculation comes from). I also get the feeling that I'm moving, like in a car speeding up. It is unsettling, but doesn't bother me.

From what I remember of timing, it seems like it usually happened before bed or early in the morning. I recall once being at a coffee shop with friends and getting a very strong feeling that my tongue was enlarging, almost like something was flowing out of me. I also find that I often get mini-experiences of this when I pray.

There probably isn't a lot written about it since it doesn't actually prevent (most) people from living there lives.  There's no sense of urgency to spend money for research. I really do hope that something gets written soon, though. Anyone know Oliver Sacks personally? I wonder if he's thought about this.

Wow, I am going through this right now and went on the internet to see if there were others like me!  My whole family (three older sisters and one younger brother) experienced this on a regular basis as well when we were younger (I am now 24).  We called it the big and small feeling because we didnt know what it was.  My mom thought it was black magic and we always felt like it was some kind of voodoo lol.  But yeah, I would normally happen when I had a high fevor or like right now, I am kind of sick and just over-tired.  I remember one time I felt this way and smoked up (because I was so curious about how I would feel).  It was the most interesting high I ever had!.  But yeah, I'm so freaken glad that there are others like me out there.  I wish I knew the medical term for this.  Its just so hard to explain to people.

I had the feeling of holding a thick suitcase in one hand and a thin needle in the other, and then felt as if I were shrinking, which always led to feeling extremley nauseous. It started when I had glandular fever when I was 6 and happened a couple of times a year till I was late teenager. Always at night, esspecially when ill, although if I concentreated hard enough I could make myself feel it at any time, and still can. I always thought it was just a halucination specific to myself and can't believe its so common. Never told anyone before as I didn't think anyone one would understand it!!!!
