I thought I was having an hallucination, but it's quite odd. I'm smelling smoke that seems more like cigar smoke. It's been happening for a few days, at work, at home, on the commuter train...no cause that I can see from my environment.

I do take an anti-depressant, but I've been on it for two months at full dosage, so this is a curious phenomenon. If anyone can find some useful literature about it, I'd be very grateful; likewise, if I find anything, I'll be sure to share it.

About two years ago the same happened to me. I am a non-smoker and so is my husband...we did not have any neighbors...the entire cul de sac was vacant except for our unit. I would occasionally smell a faint odor of cigarette smoke and I would ask my husband if he could smell it and he would always say no. No one could smell it but me. It's funny because I recognized the brand of the cigarette because my mother used to smoke a certain brand until she passed away. My mother had never visited my home because she passed away before we moved to this particular home and I did not have any of her belongings. Occasionally, in the middle of the night I would awaken to a nudge coming from the foot of my bed but only on my side. I would look up thinking it was one of my children trying to wake me up but no one was there. I would look at my husband who was fast asleep and he didnt look like he had moved. It was weird.

This is where it gets really strange..I recently bought a home and it is of brand new construction. My sister a non smoker, has been smelling cigarette smoke lately when she is in my home office. None of us smoke. She checks outside to see if someone is outside smoking and comes up with nothing. She ask me if I can smell it and I cannot. I am beginning to think that this has nothing to do with our health. I really think we are experiencing a visit from someone that has passed away who was a smoker. In my case, I know it was my mother because I recognized the brand of cigarettes by the smell. I do not know who could be visiting my home now because I cannot smell it anymore...maybe its my mom's way of saying that she's still around...watching over us or something.

Glad to find this thread. For the last few days I have been constantly smelling this stale cigarette smoke odor. I am 57, in good health, although I could stand to lose 15 or so lbs.

Like many of you I thought that the smell was eminating from somewhere - like the office ceiling vent or my coworkers clothing. But I am smelling the phantom smoke smell even after I leave the office.

I was at a party 2 days ago and there was a fair amount of smoking going on the outside steps of the house. Some of the smell was wafting into the house - that was real. Could it be that that triggered something? Or that the chemical receptors in my nose are still filled with smoke molecules?

I was somewhat concerned with my phantom scent because I remembered something about perceived smells (like burnt toast) being symptoms of various brain disorders like epilepsy or problems from stroke. It would be nice if someone who really knows what these phantom smell issues are arising from would put up a post and clue us in.

... I used to have this all the time ... now just occasionally. Here are some suggestions:

1. Some of us are very sensitive to the smell of tobacco smoke, even someone smoking in the neighborhood with the wind in the right direction coming toward us can cause us to smell it.

2. Smokers standing near intake vents will bring the smell into a building.'

3. There is a part of the brain being triggered to remember the smell, like an itch. Much like when the first brain operations were done, touching certain parts of the brain caused the patient to smell burnt toast in the operating room.

4. The people who have passed on who were adamant pro smokers have come back to haunt us with the smell. boo ha ha

I have asked my mom about this tonight. I've been having this experience for years on and off (that of smelling like someone has smoked a cigarette using my body). However, I've never smoked nor does anyone around me, especially when I smell it. It is so overwhelming and I am the only person who smells it. And it gives me a sense of losing my breath also. HElp!!!

Do a search on "OLFACTORY AURA" and "MIGRAINES"... I think that you will find many answers there regarding this peculiar phenomena..

This crazy affliction has dogged me for several years now. It started in my late 30's. First I thought it was something in my house that only I could smell. Then I noticed it in other places. Then we MOVED and I still occasionally smell cigarette smoke when nobody else does.

It can get so strong that I gag and my eyes water! However, if I cover my nose and filter the air with my shirt, a bed sheet or whatever, it stops!

The good news is that it is now much less frequent and the short episodes are less intense.

Nice to know I'm not the only one with this bizzare affliction. My advice is to laugh it off and realize that when it comes to "lifes little curve balls", things could be A LOT worse!

Im 22 and my mom is 48, we are the only 2 in our family to have this ability to smell a smoke from time to time, sometimes its strong and sometimes it's faint. Our household has been smoke free for 10+ years. My belief on the subject has to do with it being someone who has passed on coming around, it's their way of letting you know they are there, I know very few believe in "ghosts" and try to rely on science alone to explain things but keeping an open mind never hurts, just my opinion.

Glad to find this post. And to know that it's not just me and my wife!

We live in a 40 year old house. We did a 'studs out' remodel on the place, with all new flooring and walls.

In the master bedroom, we can smell cigarette smoke on occasion. Typically, it's at about 5:00am. We have no neighbors around us who would contribute to this smell.

What's different about my story vs. others is that we BOTH smell it when it occurs. It's a funny thing when it happens, to see who smells it first.

We have found out that a chain smoker did live in the house years ago, and we believe he makes himself present from time to time.

If you smell smoke and no one else around you smells it please tell your doctor. If you also have many headaches please go to your doctor now! A good friend of mine had these problems for a couple of years... she had a brain tumor! They didn't find it the first 2 times she went to the hospital and when they did find it it was too late. She passed away 2 years ago. Please go to your doctor! Phantom smells like something burning are often associated with a brain tumor. please, please, please tell your doctor!

This has been happening to me as well since I quit smoking. I am fairly sure the smell is coming up from my lungs, that is why the smell is so strong. I find it is worse when I have a cold.

Same thing happening to me here. Except once a friend told me that he can actually smell it coming off of me.

I had that same sense but for me that happened several months ago, maybe even a year ago.
Thought I was crazy too for smelling it when there was no real smoke around and no one I was with said they could smell it.
Mentioned it in passing to another co-worker and she told me that she had that happen to her too. We work in separate offices and both offices are "smoke-free" and the same for at home. Both of my parents had smoked but they have passed on. Can't imagine what may be the cause or possibly a combination. It has been awhile so I really can't piece together what may have brought it on. Perhaps next time I will take better notes. Hopefully that won't happen anytime soon as I am not a big fan of smoking.
