Been having odd "cigarette smoke" moments too.Started noticing it 3 years ago, while I was at work, and I just thought it was the aircon, until I asked some other people, and they couldn't smell anything.
I figured it was just psycosomatic, but couldn't figure out what was triggering it.Glad i found this bundle of posts anyaway.
I have noticed it is stronger when I have a cough. Not so strong with a cold.
Sounds like I have a mild case of it though, compared to some other posts I have read.
I have never smoked, but when I get it, I do feel a compulsion to go out and buy a packet and smoke one.Could be worse.....at least i don't want to buy a damp dog.

This cigarette smell sensation is a real mystery to me and has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks. I don't smoke and no one near my home smokes. With all the posts I have read it seems like it's either 1) in my head, 2) a spirit is watching over me or 3) something bad is coming. So, I started to think, issues 2 and 3 I can not control, but issue 1, I might be able to do something about that. I took some vick's vapor rub and placed a small dab just under my nose. And what do you know, it worked, masked out the smell and helped with the dryness I was experiencing in my nasal passage. I don't think this is a fix, but it sure was nice to have something to give me a break from that God awful smell!
Good luck everyone and I hope this gives a few of you some peace of mind! :)

I posted to this thread a few months ago when I was constantly smelling cigarette smoke. My neighbors were smokers and are no longer smoking outside and also the air is clearer since it's gotten colder. I think the stress of smelling the smoke made me obsess and focus more on it so mentally I was always on guard for the smell. Bottom line, I think by meditating, accepting the smell and relaxing helped in the long run (along with the weather changing). I'm more hopeful as I thought this was going to be a chronic lasting thing. Be hopeful and optimistic and accepting. That will relieve the stress and hopefully relieve the mysterious cigarette smells.

I have this sometimes, too. I still smoke on occasion. I think it's a psychological-biological thing. Since you've smoked in the past, it might be your brain remembering (and/or craving a cigarette) tricking you into thinking you smell cigarette smoke, or actually making your nose smell it again for the purpose of tempting you to smoke another cigarette. This is just a hunch; it is in no way researched or factual. But I'm 70% certain this is what you'll find if you research the phenomenon.

i used to have the same thing.. it made me crazy. I don't smoke and no one in my house smokes..... but then I realized it stopped when I cut back on coffee. I used to go to Wawa all the time. I'd have a large coffee every day (24oz). when I stopped going the smell went away. I thought it was coincidence but then my son brought me home coffee for several days and it came back. He works for Wawa. since not drinking wawa coffee it hasn't come back. hmmmmm

I too have noticed this condition in the last week or so while recovering from a bad cold. I have also noticed a faint smell/taste of wood smoke when I go for a walk, and just yesterday realised we have had quite stagnant weather lately, with mist and light fog persisting much of the day. Perhaps the old London pea-souper smogs and airborne pollutions are returning by stealth. Has anybody had a medical reply to this question?

I HAD ONCE QUIT SMOKING FOR 3 YEARS WHEN IN MY EARLY 20'S, I STARTED BACK AFTER GOING THROUGH A VERY LOW POINT IN MY LIFE. I KEPT SMOKING AND TRIED TO QUICK SEVERAL TIMES JUST TO PICK THEM BACK UP. I AM 50 YEARS OLD, AND I QUIT SMOKING SINCE OCT 2010, THANKS TO HELP FROM CHANTIX. I COULD NEVER FIND A WAY TO TOTALLY KICK THIS HABIT, BUT CHANTIX HELP ME GET OVER THE MOUNTAIN THEN I HAD FAIRLY SMOOTHE SAILING AFTERWARDS. I THOUGHT ABOUT CIGARETTES WHEN I WAS UPSET, BUT DIDN'T ACT ON IT. I KNOW FOR A FACT I COULDN'T KICK THIS HABIT WITHOUT CHANTIX HELPING ME OVERCOME THIS TERRIBLE HABIT. I DIDN'T QUIT MY FIRST WEEK LIKE THE COMMERCIALS ADVERTISE. I ENDED UP TAKING TWO FULL PRESCRIPTIONS AND THEN ABLE TO CONQUER MY NASTY CIGARETTES. I REALIZED IT WAS IT IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL HABIT AND ADDICTION AS WELL AS IT IS A CHEMICAL ADDITIONS. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONQUER ALL OTHER EXPERIMENTAL ITEMS, KNOWING I COULD BECOME DEPENDANT ON THEM, SO I SEPARATED MYSELF FROM THOSE THINGS AND PEOPLE WHO WOULD REMIND ME OF THOSE THINGS. TO ME, CIGARETTE SMOKING HAS BEEN THE HARDEST DRUG I HAVE EVER TRIED TO QUIT. I KNEW I TRULY NEEDED THE ENCOURAGER CHANTIX. IT DIDN'T GIVE ME SUICIDAL THOUGHTS, JUST REALLY WIERD DREAMS I NEVER EVER DREAM. DREAMS WERE NOT A PROBLEM. ONCE I QUIT AND WAS OFF CHANTIX, MY DREAMS CHANGED BACK TO MY NORM. I K NOW THIS POST IS 4 YRS OLD, AND I SURE HOPE YOU QUIT BY NOW, BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T I WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO TRY CHANTIX TODAY, I AM A HOUSEWIFE AND HAVE NO REASONS TO PROMOTE THIS DRUG, EXCEPT I KNOW IT WORKED FOR ME. I HAVEN'T SMOKE SINCE 2010, IT IS NOW JANUARY 2013. GOOD LUCK AND MANY PRAYERS!

For the last week I too have been smelling cigarette smoke and thought I was going round the bend! I starting searching and am amazed how many people have this kind of problem. There are very few answers however from those posting. I am going to the doctor tomorrow for other reasons but I also want to highlight this and see what he says. I am just recovering from the flu and hubby thinks this must be the reason. I have now read (probably too much) about this issue and it would seem important that everyone sees a doctor to check it out at least. It's driving me crazy and taking over! I detest cigarette smoke and have never smoked. I will feedback thee outcome of my doc appointment if there is anything to report back.
