I also have an allergy to HFCS. It took me years of keeping food journals to figure it out. I was having a great deal of trouble with coughing and wheezing after eating- to the point where people would beg me to get allergy testing to see what food I am allergic to.
I also had developed a strange "eczema like" patch on my face that is going away now that I have removed HFCS from my diet. It is not easy. the stuff is in everything!
Thankfully, the public is more aware of the danger of this additive and it is becoming easier to find foods that do NOT have this added!

I have an allergy to HCFS as well. I was lucky, my father had the allergy so I did not have to research and go through too much hell. My symptoms are scratchy throat, coughing up phlegm copiously and getting really tired and sweating. So far I have not had welts that directly correspond to the allergy. If you find this on the internet, here is what I did. I got rid of any soft drink with HCFS. Look out it is even in chocolate milk! For whatever reason, I got rid of bread as well. I can eat corn tortilas but I don't make it a habit or corn either

I have general allergies, none to corn as such.  But if I eat foods with HFCS, I notice I start wheezing and increase thick mucus.  I have also had the all-over iching.  I've stoped eating HFCS and sometimes get by mistake and I know it within 24 hours.  Before I knew about HFCS and was getting it from just about every food stuff, I started to think I had major breathing issues.  So sad that many people do not know anything about HFCS issues.  Food companies, please stop using it!!!

I too am in my forties... I woke up this morning with a very dry throat and a lump in the back.   I have experienced this a few times and came to the conclusion it was the Chardonnay I love to drink (this was a few years ago).   Very disappointing.   I have cut out Chardonnay but as I mentioned I woke up this morning with the dry throat and lump.  I had some red licorice yesterday... Corn Syrup.  I have had a few instances where I get horribly choked up - once on milk duds and the other on a tootsie roll (I am not a junk food junkie- even if it sounds like it :) They choked me up so much it was very difficult to breathe.   I looked at the ingredients of all these foods and corn syrup is the main ingredient as well as artificial color red (40).   I did some research on Corn syrup they say they add enzymes... this is a process that they do for Chardonnay as well.   Maybe it is the enzymes added?  My son just woke up and told me he has a dry throat and a small lump - just saying "no" to corn syrup!

I'm in my mid 40s and it is evident that corn syrup, fructose, high fructose, etc. give me hives no matter what. Wheat or any related grain can also result in hives but not as bad as corn. It takes about 3 days to clear. Wheat only takes one day to clear.

It shows you that this compound or chemical should not be in our foods. NOw I cannot eat a lot of foods, but i lost 13 pounds, no rosacea, no belly fat, and no sinus infections (bronchitis, etc.). I can go to sleep and breath normal.

My mother also has the same effects with corn. Other people we talk too, are coming to the same conclusion. The industry needs to stop using this chemical in all of our foods.

I thought I would be fine with a small amount of corn syrup as I have tolerated Salen's Hot Dogs before.   I am already aware that I have celiac so I avoid all brands which have gluten in them.  I only ate 2 hot dogs and French's mustard on them.  Both are gluten free but the Salen's contains corn syrup.  I have eaten them before but just today I developed symptoms similar to my gluten allergy symptoms.  At first I thought that I might have gotten glutenized by mistake but in checking the brands they were both gluten free.  Couldn't have been that so what.  Corn syrup... I had a similar reaction to Schwans Chocolate Ice cream about a month ago but I thought it had just been cross contaminated some how.  But in checking the company insists that there is no wheat only milk but it did have corn syrup.  So I figure it must be corn syrup.  I avoided it for a while but then I ate a hot dog every few days for about a month and now this.  I think it builds up in our bodies increasing the toxicity.  So I think from now on I'm avoiding it.  I don't feel like getting these symptoms again:  Mucus build up in throat, ears stuffing up to the point of not hearing well or at all, headache (possible migraine starting), blurry vision, shaking hands, numbness in feet, pain in left ankle where I had a bruise, dizziness, and acid reflux/feeling like I want to vomit.

I agree. That commercial ticks me off. I can't stand them saying corn syrup is safe and its like cane sugar.  Most of the time its chemically altered genetically modified corn that's made into syrup.  Its vile tasting anyway.  I don't understand the need for it since we have better tasting alternatives - other than its cheap.  I'll stick to my agave nectar, honey and raw cane sugar thank you very much. Be very careful with artificial sweeteners too. I found aspertame in regular (not sugar free) royal gelatin.  I refuse to buy many processed items because of the crud they are putting in them when its not necessary just to save a buck.

My reaction to HFCS, aspartame and the host of other man made sweetners is extreme imsomnia. If I have even a little HFCS or the others after 3:00 pm, I wake up about 1:00 am and my mind races and I cannot go back to sleep till 5:30 or 6:00 am. If I have a larger amount of it, my joints feel swollen and sore. It also causes mood swings and a host of othe reactions. The chemicals used in processing the corn syrup etc. are most likely the biggest cause of most of everyones problems. I have also realized that these man made sweetners are not listed on many products like, Hytop apple juice, and other imported foods. Just cause it is not listed on the label doesn't mean that it is not in the food. READ THE LABELS...... but .... watch your reactions also......

If you are allergic to penicillin and corn syrup it could be likely that you have an allergy/hypersensitivity to mold. Both are derived or processed using mold.

My husband has Celiac Disease, but was recently diagnosed with an allergy towards high fructose corn syrup (which affects him more than the Celiac). He had a severe rash all over his legs, stomach, chest and face when he digested HFCS. The affects are horrendous and takes a long time to disappear. He was miserable! We now take so much time looking at ingredients for HFCS as well as wheat!! Meijer brand ketchup, sauces..etc has products without the HFCS which works well. Check out Weber brand of bbq sauce that uses molasses instead of HFCS. We use this a lot for grilling. We no longer use sodas. BTW - Karol corn syrup no longer uses HFCS in their product!!! :) Commenting your concerns to companies really helps. They may change their ingredients because so many are developing these allergies over time. My husband and brother in law didn't develop these allergies until their early fifties. I believe it's our bodies way to let us know enough is enough. We were never meant to ingest these ingredients. They are not natural.

that mucus-y throat and coughing fits are symptoms of asthma

Probably, but in this context they are about allergies to high fructose corn syrup.

Holly, for over 20 years I have gotten a severe skin eruption (or sore) on the roof of my mouth after eating HFCS. And as many others have commented, it is EVERYWHERE! It began with Life Savers (ironic) which of course just sit on the tongue/roof of the mouth until dissolved. Always in the exact same spot too. This week, it appeared (rather painfully) on the other side for the first time. Ate some deserts at a wedding reception, and of course they must have been loaded with HFCS. Where do we go to sue these bastards/liars who think they can shove this fake c**p down our throats (literally as well as figuratively).

Genetically Modified Corn (GMO) started in around 1998. I don't know if your symptoms started around that time, but GMO corn is a big factor in allergies But the extraction to corn syrup also presents a lot of factors too - corn syrup is being substituted where we would usually have cane sugar. Beet sugar can also trigger a response..

Chapped lips usually means too much salt. You might try cutting down or out the salt in your diet to see.

Holly, I know this is ages after your post but I had the same lip issue. It was terrible and nothing I did solved it. I moved and my new doctor readily diagnosed me with an over abundance of yeast and put me on an herbal supplement and antibiotic for three weeks and it went away!
