I just recently turned 45 and ever since age 11, I have always had, what I would consider abnormal periods. My doctor placed me on birth control pills to try to regulate me, but nothing worked. I have never had a normal 28 day cycle. I would always go 18 to 21 days.
In my middle 30's, I bled for 45 days without going to the doctor, hoping that one day it would stop. I finally gave in and went to the emergency room because the abdominal pain was unbearable. The doctor placed me on some pills to stop the bleeding. I stopped bleeding for 10 days and then started again. After bleeding another 30 days, I went to see my OB GYN. As soon as the pap smear results were in, he scheduled me for a DNC. He had explained that my ovaries had developed some fibroid cists and that was what was causing the excessive bleeding.
Now that I'm in my 40's, mother nature is playing some nasty tricks on me. I only had three mentrual cycles last year.... January, October and November. At first I was excited, thinking that maybe this would be the end to all of this and that menapause was well underway. I haven't missed a period at all this year so far.... and this time, I was experiencing some very severe pelvic pain.... causing me to double over. I've also noticed that right before I start menustrating, I bloat something terrible and have the worse gas pangs I've ever had.
I've never been able to get pregnant and I also have a hypo thyroid. Could this be contributing to the symptoms I'm having?
Any answers you can give me will greatly be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hello! I believe that hypothyroidism could have had a lot to do with you not being able to get pregnant.
Low thyroid production can often cause lack of ovulation and menstrual problems and irregularities. It seems to me that you had a short luteal phase. This means that the timeframe between ovulation and menstruation was too short and hypothyroid can cause this as well. This phase should last around 15 days to nurture a fertilized egg, and too-short phase can cause failure to sustain a fertilized egg, which shows up as infertility.
Hypothyroidism often increases levels of prolactin, which has a negative effect on fertility. Sometimes it can’t even be determined how hypothyroid affects fertility.
When were you diagnosed with hypothyroid? Did you get rid of the cysts on the ovary?
My mother had a hysterectomy because of these cysts that were bloody and threaten to burst!
