Happy to say that mine did eventually go away...it took a couple of months though but my hearing has returned to normal. I just had to wait it out - when I told my ENT specialist about the muffled hearing and feelings of pressure build-up in my ear he acted as if he had never heard of anyone experiencing these symptoms after a grommet procedure before and that possibly I was imagining it!! Very frustrating and insulting!!

Good luck, hope it clears up for you soon X

Hi,

I had grommets fitted 11 days ago and my hearing is terrible. I cannot hear my own voice properly so I'm unsure of how loud I am actually talking. I have the same problem with sounds not coming across correct such as car doors etc and i'm really worried this is not going to get any better. I have called the hospital where I had this done on several occasions and they dont seem too concerned - just keep telling me 'these things take time'. Its my first day back at work today since the treatment and I couldnt go on in this job if this is how my ears are going to be. Really worried but thanks to the last poster who said their ears did improve after a couple of months. Its longer than I would like to have waited but if I know it will eventually improve thats a relief.
I will keep everyone updated with my progress and if everyone could do the same it would be much appreciated.
Good luck all.
Brian.

I had two grommets inserted last June 2010 so i could fly. It was almost impossible for me to fly anymore as my ears don't naturally pop properly, taking days to clear after a flight. The grommets, surprisingly, are amazing and I have flown all around the world safely and happly - without any anxiety or pain - for 8 months. however one of the grommets has come out earlier than expected. The other one is still there. But with one ear now without a grommet flying is again tricky. I travel as much by train as I can and risk the odd flight back home. the whooshing noise everyone talks about I experience and it has never gone away. I also felt as though I could hear everything inside, my bones, my hips, every movement became so loud and strange it was to experience this. For me they are a miracle, but having general anaethetic to get them in is my main concern.

Im considering getting the grommet insetion and adenoids removed but what i have read with all the side affect altered my dicision ,Im rethinking now weather to get it done.

Most of the accounts are just days or weeks after the operation so their are always going to be problems a bit like a healing process. The imprestion i get is that The people who had the operation months after seemed happier ,and suggest that the problems went away .Could this be the case why the people with the problem at the start did not return to tell what happened further.

my question :

does your voice get higher or high pitch after you operation thus decreasing confidence. If you hear things louder ???

Its feels good hearing words to my problem with my ears.I feel for you all and understand what your going through.
Im a 33 female. Had tittanium grommets in 6 days ago.my left ear ok,but my right is bad.Cotton wool feeling, hearing my own voice, mixed up sounds ect.
I had plastic grommets in 4 years ago.But it took about a week 4 my ears to settle down. Then it was great.life got good.
one of them fell out about 18 months after,That ear was good untill a couple of years after. Then muffled sounds came back and infections followed. so doc send me back to hospital.had op last week, they took the old grommet out(right ear)pop news ones in.
Having these ear problems makes you feel cut off.not wanting to talk,or listen some times. my fingers are crossed things get better. ps i hate hearing my own voice in my head. x x x

Hi,

Just a quick update to let everyone know my progress. I have to say I have noticed an improvement in my hearing although its still not too great.

Its now been a few months since my treatment and the ENT clinic is more than happy with how the op went and say everthing is healing well. I seem to be able to hear other people now but still cannot hear my own voice - really 'boomy' in my head! One thing I have learned though is to stop pinching my nose and blowing. (I used to do this all the time before the op to try to relieve the pressure). When my consultant heard I was doing this he was quite annoyed and explained that all this was doing was slightly dislodging the grommet and prolonging the healing progress.

Once again I'm just playing the waiting game but as I said before things have definetly improved. Still not convinced this op was a great idea but I'll post back here soon with any progress. Hope this helps.

I had a grommet op 13 days a go and I'm having the same issues. It's like there is a fan beside my right ear (I only had 1 grommet inserted in my right ear.)  The ENT A&E department suggested I use Otrivine and Sterimar a few times aday and it does help. It might be because my Eustachian tube is blocked? I should state that you can only use Otrivine for 10 days at a time. I have a little clarity for a while each day but I hope this goes away as I had this op so I could fly as well..

Hi everyone

Just been reading some your posts and decided to join iXD

Ive always had probs with my ears since i was small and i had grommets put in as i suffered with and still do with glue ear.

Ive suffered with glue since but it didnt last very long thank god but recently the last 3 to 4 mths( after  i had the flu) . iive had glue ear.

Its finally got to the point where my doc has reffered me to an ENT at last because my ears have given up on me and i now have a ear infection in my right ear as well as glue. Ive been on antibiotics for 3 daYS which i have to take for 7 and to be honest my ear has gradually gone worse, i now feel quite deaf in my ear im finding it hard to hear myself speak and listen to my family. I also have that horrible rushing sound which stresses me out and i think makes things worse.

Grommets do work but it takes a little while for them to settle from what i can remeber.XD

I see the ENT in 6wks.

all i w ant is to hear again wither grommets or hearing aids

good luck al

whooshing noise stopped after a month or so. I think the noise was related to my pulse or that I could hear my pulse, I know this sounds silly but your never know.

I know, I'm still not sure if the operation has worked for me. I'm going on a test flight at the end of March and if I get vertigo symptoms after that I will never be able to fly again.
