Having just had mine removed yesterday with similar symptoms, I was instructed (like many of you have said before) that the CO2 gas they use to inflate the abdomen is part of the problem. The doctor explained that most of the gas dissipates while the patient is in recovery; however, more often that not, some gas will be trapped under/around the diaphragm area. Thus, the inability to really inhale without a piercing pain. The same gas is responsible for the shoulder pain. This trapped gas usually resolves itself within 4-5 days. Moving around helps to also move the gas around and out. I did call the doctor this morning and the office suggested taking a Gas-X to help relive some discomfort. I was also told getting a massage (while sitting upright in the chair) with focus on the shoulder/scapula/neck base area also helps the gas to leave.
The hospital staff also strongly encouraged walking 5-10 minutes every hour you are awake. I did this yesterday and was absolutely miserable. I walked inside our house back and forth holding the HUG pillow to ease some of the discomfort. Today, it was less frustrating, a little simpler, no pillow and made me feel better about the process because this morning, I was REALLY regretting my life choice :)

Had the same problem but on right side under right rib cage. I could only get about a third of a lung of air then a sharp pain. Seven days later when i was bent over there was a thump ???something moved back into place and immediately could breath with no pain.
