I am 63. I started smoking aged around 14. I smoked about 10 to 15 a day over the last few years, probably more before that.
I gave up 8 weeks ago. At first I did so much excecise it was mad. Walking miles, riding a bike and yep it was Ok for a couple of weeks.
Then the withdrawals started coming on. The bloating started a few weeks ago. Every morning I do a two mile walk around a nearby lake.
I was plodding along doing it in about an hour and got it down to 45 minutes but the last few weeks have been hell. The bloating starts in the morning and on the walk my stomach swells and goes as hard as a rock. I feel a desperate need to burp. I keep going and eventually I do several enormous burps, damn near echoes around the hills. This relieves the gas but when I eat around midday the stomach swells again. It is very uncomforatalbe and sometimes it seems my gut is so swollen it gets awkward to breath.
It has been a hard eight weeks. I never thought it was going to be easy but this gas and gut problem I really didnt expect.
And yes like so many others I wonder why not many sites tell you about the real bad side of giving up smoking.
I read the letters on other sites of people giving up and running around the world before breakfast but for me it has been pretty awful.

I just posted about my experiences post quitting. I'm 40, been smoking since I was 16, with a 4 year break where I ran a marathon, raced bikes, did 3000 yard swim workouts. Of course I'm 40 now so it's all downhill, according to the doctors. I haven't been getting a good breath since I dropped the smokes, I get that distended gut, which puts pressure on my lungs, makes me worse. I don't even want to eat because of it. I was half wondering if I had a lung problem, or a stomach problem. I saw the lung doc and she told me the coughing and c**p I'm clearing out, the breathing issues, it was all a normal part of not smoking. Yeah, that's nice, huh? I'm sure you feel the same way. I feel like picking up a smoke right now to test the theory because.....this stinks and it has caused major anxiety, so much so that I am now on Ativan two or three times a day, which I think is causing me to be a bit unstable, or rather prone to depression. I have quit before and not had these issues. The doc thinks this suffering is part of quitting at my age. You've got a few more years on me (smile) so maybe the same is true. Whatever this is, I wish it would go away.
I hope you feel better.
Have you seen a GI doc because I swear, I was going to make an appointment this week.
