I have had enough of this to be honest, I have only just turned 16 and now I have been having to live with this gunk in the back of my throat. I was in hospital for what the doctors think was a bad virus affecting my glands and causing me to go yellow, but because I live in the UK, they are probably all wrong as per usual, if you want my opinion, I think it was glandular fever, they've also told me that the yellowness was casused by gilberts syndrome!! This is a bloody pain in the arse, why doesn't the doctor do anything about it? Instead of giving me some bloody nasal sprey for a month or two, IT DOESN'T WORK! I have been under a lot of depression lately, and it's all because of this nasty experience of going to hospital and not having a  clue what is wrong with me! Even today, I have to make my own assumptions up. I am now in a queue to see a specialist for depression, because to be honest, I've had enough of the tears, but ultimately, what would make me happy is to have all this problem cleared up, the excessive mucus in my throat, and the depression, and the worrying! I used to be on top of the world, a lively chap who made everyone laugh, I'm not anything like that any more! Life is pointless, if god wished the best of the world, then he wouldn't have made diseases and viruses, and chavs! That is it, I want to see an ENT specialist, and if they can't rid this problem, then I'll tell them exactly how I feel, and then I'll probably smack them one! And my  doctor who seems to think that everything is fine, well it isnt't, especialy not for me at the moment. How can one continue to enjoy life and look forward to a good future when one is having to live like this? When I blew the candles out on my birthday cake, my one wish was for me to feel good about myself...

I too have suffered from all of the symptoms you have described. It has been at least 12 years for me. I have tried everything as well. My ongoing research has shown me that balancing your PH levels in your body should help your problem. I have learned that an acidic body will create more mucus and acid. I recently combined real raw honey after each meal with dietary changes. It is amazing how many people suffer from this yet doctors treat you as if you are making up the symptoms. Out of several thousands of dollars of internet supplements, dr's, perscriptions, books, cleanses, and the like I found the most recent remedy to help me the most. Mucus can come from your stomach and gather in your throat just like acid. This is why it feels like it is always present even after you clear your throat and discharge it. It never goes away. Mucus can be similar to acid and reflux. I have always disregarded that theory until of late. The honey helps with the sealing of the valve in your throat which prohibits the mucus from coming up into your esophagus. Dietary changes help in reducing the amount of mucus your body is producing. These two things have helped me thus far. My problem is not nearly as irritating as it had been and seems to be getting better daily. Good luck.

I have had the same problem for three years. I thought I was coming down with a cold but all I got was the mucus feeling in my throat. I have never smoked. I have been to 2 ENTs and numerous other Drs. I have been given almost every allergy and sinus drug available, tried mucinex, nasal sprays, nasal cleansing, and the inhaling of vicks. I was told by one doctor that I had acid reflux and she did a ph test and my numbers were the highest she had ever seen and convinced me that surgery would fix my problem. I had the surgery 2 1/2 years ago and still have the original problem I went in with. I had no other symptoms for acid reflux, just the feeling in the throat. I am in the process now of trying herbal remedies. I have been told that Wild Cherry Bark, Pokeroot, and Burdock root may help alleviate the problem.

My wife has suffered with symptoms of excessive mucus in her throat for about 6 years now. We thought it was symptomatic from a hemi-thyroid-ectomy she underwent about 4 years ago, but have recalled that she was having this problem well before that.

She is currently taking synthroid to manage her thyroid level, but the levels have not settled where they should yet.

She experiences extreme nausea, excessive events of having to clear her throat and says that she feels like she's try to pull the mucus from her stomach when she engages the throat clearing.

I have read many of the posts in this space from people all over the age spectrum, therefore the explanation of "age related" shared by many of the doctors we have visited about this problem, seems to be misdiagnosed.

Please give me some direction. There has to be an answer for this problem. Lori is currently being seen at the Mayo Clinic, here in Arizona but we still cannot zero in on a resolution to this problem.

Thanks for any feed back the group or Doctors can offer.

I also suffer from all of the above I have been living with it for about 2 years now and find that the mucus in my throat is worst after eating, especially anything dairy, mainly milk. My GP told me reflux etc.. although I was not confident when leaving and the medicine he prescribed did not help with the nasal sprays etc.. I am concerned as to why there appears to be no solution to this problem and why my GP was puzzled by my explanation like he had never heard of it before. It makes social life and the job I do very difficult especially when I have appointments after my lunch. Any ideas or solutions welcome...

Further to my earlier post, I now believe that chronic inflammation may be the cause.

My wife came across a book called the Fat Resistance Diet (you can find it all over the web, including on www.FatResistanceDiet.co.uk), and it's all about a hormone called Leptin that gets disrupted because of the modern diet that most people eat.

The doctor who wrote this book found that although he was treating people for chronic inflammation, his patients were losing weight as well.

Anyway, for different reasons, my wife and I have tried to adopt the principles of this diet, as best we can, and we're also taking supplements (e.g. the Leptin Control Pack on the above website, as well as other anti-inflammatory products and supplements such as Tart Cherry, OmegaXL and a few more - I just take the pills my wife gives me), and I seem to be experiencing a general improvement.

There are occasions now when my sense of smell returns, sometimes even though my nose is still completely blocked up, which is weird.

I'm still suffering from what feels like excess mucus and am blocked up a lot of the time, but it doesn't seem as bad, and we're pretty sure this new anti-inflammatory diet / drive is helping.

as the rest of you i have this same problems
it has been atleast a whole month already. however me being a smoker has been making it much worse. im trying to quit but thats besides the point.
im down to 1-2 cigarettes a day. but after those cigarettes have been smoked i will be coughing up very nasty brown chunks mixed in with my excessive mucus...if i dont smoke i will not see any brown chunks mixed in. kinda scary honestly
even if i drink blue kool-aid for example. i will be spitting out blue mucus
its like someone installed a filter in my throat and its catching everything that goes thru.
unfortunatley i have a job that does not provide insurance and i dont have the money to see a doctor. i was hoping this would go away but its not.
not only is it a becoming a pain in the rear its starting to scare me...
at night i feel like someones got there hand around my throat limiting
my breathing.

I am feeling all of you right about now! I have had this phlegm in my throat for so many years. I thought it was normal because I had allergies and frequent sinus infections. But then I noticed that it was actually making my breath smell terrible and I could not have that!! I went to the Dr. he put me on Mucinex and other related drugs. I tried some of my friends Acid Reflux med's and that didn't work either. Well, one night I was searching for weight loss diets because I've been trying to lose weight too and I've been sort researching all these diets. I found some website which talked about Apple Cider Vinegar and how it helps to balance your bodys PH levels and lose weight. Much of the American diet consists of food that is highly ACIDIC (Meat, Poultry, Fish, Eggs, Grains) and we should be eating more ALKALINIC foods, like fruits and vegetables. So anyways, I started looking up more information on Apple Cider Vinegar and saw this one forum, where this lady wrote thabout this excessive phlegm in her throat. The Dr, whose name is "Dr. Ted" from Thailand, replied to her saying that she needed to use a more neutral solution of ACV rather than the typically prescribed solution, which is 2 TEApoons of ACV with 1 TEAspoon honey in an 8 oz glass of water. Instead, he told her to add between 1/2 half TEAspoons to 1 whole TABLEspoon of Baking Soda, or more depending on the amount of mucus you wake up with in your throat. You are to take this 2 to 3 times a day. I guess its the Baking Soda which neautralizes the ACV and that is what Dr Ted says makes all the difference, the Baking Soda. Well, I tried this and it worked! But, you do have to do it 2 times a day or maybe 3 sometimes. Oh and by the way Dr Ted says to use "Bragg's ACV". ACV is used to balance out your PH levels and I think the cause of our allergies and phlegm build up is partly due to our genetics, but also our diets being too acidic, which is the typical american diet. I even read that aerobic exercise also creates acid in our bodies, so just balance it out by eating green veggies, green tea, plenty of fruits like bananas and apples. Caffienated drinks, except for Green Tea, are all Highly ACIDIC. Try staying away from coffee and see what happens with that phlegm in your throat. Soda pops and Cola's are acidic try staying away from those too.
You should take ACV everyday because it will help balance out your PH. Thats all, hope this helped you, because it helped me a lot! Good Luck!!!

I have had chronic phlegm the past year or two and a recent bout of bad bronchitis has aggravated the problem. It is definitely worse after I eat and uncomfortable to always be hacking and clearing my throat - at work and socially. I’ve read through a lot of the posts about other peoples ideas and experiences and it made me feel better as there seem to be several possible causes/approaches to getting rid of the persistent phlegm ball. I'm trying to make sense of all the recommendations. I will let you know what I try and if anything works..

I had nasal polip which I had removed about 3 years ag, I have had constant flem, throat clearing and caughing up of small amounts of thick flem which at times seem to come from my throat and at others from my lungs. This really is a pain, Dr says the same, basically keep taking a nasal spray, nasal washes and drink lots of water. These at times seem to help the problem a little but nothing more. It seems as soon as I clear my throat I need to clear it again and it is worse after eating.

Thanks for the info from other posts, now going to try and find ACV and give that a try. It is so continual that I no longer socialise as I find it embarrasing having to constantly clear my throat.

Hubby had Heller Myotomy 2 yrs ago. He was fine for one year, could eat, drink anything he wanted. Then another swallowing issue has come up. Very thick & excess saliva, mucous, yuck. He can literally spit up 24 ounces of this yuck in an hours time. Good days, he can swallow just about anything. Very few of these. Then bad days more often, he can't swallow anything. So much phlegm, food won't go down. It just gets stuck in esophagus and he gags, and it hurts him so bad he has to vomit it up. Has lost 35 lbs. Gave up on GI doc. Going to internal med next Friday. Now I am reading that an ENT may be the one to go to. Have heard that Internal Meds are mystery solvers so will try that. Then ENT.
