I had the same problem this morning and I am pretty freaked out. I started bleeding last Thursday and I wasn't supposed to because I started a new pack of pills that week to skip my period because I was in California on vacation with my bf and it would have interrupted it.
I have had some bad cramping and there was a lot of pressure the other day near my kidneys. This morning when I pulled out my tampon I got that piece of flesh and I was freaked. I didn't save it because I have no opportunities to see a doctor within the next week and my regular gyno is never available and always rubs everything off as normal (she even missed a mass in my mother's breast..pretty horrible doctor)

so I hope it's just the lining of the uterus but it is hard to find out about because noone takes the time to educate women about their bodies. There is still much to be done in the fight for women's rights.

I just started taking birth control pills... this was my first pack (Triceclyn Lo) and on the 19th pill my period came. I thought this was unusual because I'd been told it was on the first few days of taking the "placebo" pills that I'd get my period. When I went to change my pad I had tissue that so many of you describe. It was quite solid... not gooey or even jell-o like and pink/fleshy coloured. Almost like the inside of my cheeks... I think.
I am also a little relieved to read that it has happened to so many people... But it still freaked me out ALOT and I'd like to know what it is/was...

The same happened to me, but my clots look like muscle pieces with white a white lining. I had two of them, they were HUGE. I always got them before, but they were simply bloody, and hurt like hell. I have a history of fibroids in my family, so I know this is what it probably is. I'm only 20, and I am going to get a full exam soon. :-)

I'm a 27 year-old, never had children, haven't been sexually active in a few years :'(
I'm on Tri-Nessa for acne (I've had acne since high school and it kept getting worse, been to several dermatologists...I got on Tri-Nessa so I'd be able to start taking Accutane...turns out birth control pills is all I need to get my acne under control!) After I started taking this birth control, starting with the first menstrual cycle after, I got all this excess discharge! And it's been that way ever since! (Been on Tri-Nessa for 5-6 months, maybe)
The symptoms I get during my periods (GRAPHIC, SORRY):
Lots of discharge and less actual blood.
Periods tend to last a few days longer than they used to.
There's always discharge, but I often find a mysterious GLOB or BLOB sitting there.
Cramping is much worse than it was before.

I'm no doctor obviously and of course you'd want to get checked out by your own doctor (as I will someday when I have the money) but I'm willing to bet that for most of you, your symptoms are probably resulting from the birth control pills you take.

That's my two cents.

I got the same symptoms you all have described (2 large piece of flesh-looking substance) but mine was definatly from a miscarriage. I tested positive 2 weeks before this occured.

Last night I had happen to me what many of you described: large chunks of fleshy tissue fell out. It was light pink with some white and they were connected together with stringy materials. I instantly panicked thinking that I did have a miscarriage. I called the emergency number at my Gyno's to see what I should do. The doctor told me that because I tested negative for pregnancy the week before (I was 2 weeks late) and because I did not experience heavy bleeding that the most likely culprit is that my whole lining instead of dissolving and falling off just decided to drop off. From what I have read about incidents like mine, it looks like that any delays in having your period causes a large build up of the lining or thickening or whatever, but what happens is that there is more to shed and this results in more clots and tissue chunks. The doctor says that it is rare that the whole lining does that but that it does happen.

I am intensely relieved to know that it most likely was not a miscarriage. Now I just need to get it together enough to discard of the tissue I collected just in case. I know now that it is not a baby, but at the same time, for a brief amount of time, I thought it was which makes just tossing it in trash kind of hard :\

I hope this never happens to me again.

WHy are there no answers on this yet? I am very concerned.. this is the second time this has happened to me, but I have not been irregular with my period or the pill. Every time this occurs I get a very sudden, sharp pain in my uterus, and then I find a thick sheet of tissue in my menstruation. It is definitely a layer of flesh, I just need to know if this is abnormal and if I should be seen (again).

I had the same thing happen to me when I woke up today... about a 3 inch by 2inch piece of tissue like chicken skin! I take Quasense BC (generic for seasonale), which allows you to go w/o a period for 3 months. About half the time I have breakthrough bleeding, which is very light. Today was the first time I had breakthrough bleeding accompanied by this tissue. I have also noticed no response from people after seeing their ob/gyn. I do not see my ob/gyn until Sept. 23rd, so I will do my best to come back with some details. Thanks to everyone else who posted... I'm glad I am not the only one!

I'm a little appalled at how few people have come back to tell us what the doctor has said.

I'm 30. I started hormonal birth control for the very first time (I've always been a condom kind of girl) on August 19th, so a little over three weeks ago. I got a Depo shot two days before my period was scheduled to start. For almost two weeks I've been having abdominal pain similar to but not as bad as I usually get the first couple days of my period. My period (or breakthrough bleeding, or whatever this is) started three days ago. This morning I changed my tampon and found a largish piece of light colored tissue clinging to it. Another appeared on my toilet paper as I wiped preparatory to putting another tampon in. I've always had, uh, chunky menstrual discharge. Ew, that sounds so weird. But I've known for 20 years that almost none of the menstrual fluid is actually blood (just enough to make it red) so I've never thought twice about how much of it comes out in, y'know, pieces. This is the first time I've had such large pieces, and the first time they've been this color.

Reading over all the previous posts, it looks like this happens when there's a significant change to hormone levels so I'm not really concerned. I don't have a doctor because I don't have insurance (I got my Depo shot at Planned Parenthood) so I'm not going to be able to go in to ask about it. I'm not sure I would anyway, given that those of you who have asked don't appear to have gotten much info at all.

My research on the internet suggests a possible theory that somebody may want to pass along to their doctor should anyone actually go ask. Like I said, I'm on Depo. The fake progesterone basically tricks my body into thinking it's already pregnant. Now I found this on Wikipedia: "In case of an extrauterine pregnancy, the endometrium nevertheless becomes decidualized. A woman may shed the lining in the form of a decidual cast, which may be mistaken as a miscarriage, when, in fact, the ectopic still persists." In plainer English, the pregnancy hormones from the tubal pregnancy cause the uterine lining to begin turning into a decidua, which is what the mother's body uses to interface with the placenta of her fetus. The resulting "decidual cast" is what interests me. I looked around and found this article that seems to discuss something very close to what's happening to many of us:

Then I found this blurb in an abstract of a medical article: "Membranous dysmenorrhea is an unusual clinical entity. It is characterized by the expulsion of huge fragments of endometrium during the menses, favored by hormonal abnormality or drug intake."

So I think it's very possible that our hormonal birth control is causing some form of membranous dysmenorrhea. It's not a common condition (or at least it's not a commonly reported condition) so your general practitioner probably won't be knowledgeable about it, but it's something a gynecologist should have at least been told about in med school. And if someone asks their doctor about it, please come back and tell me if I'm right! Also, if you're not on birth control and are having this issue, you should probably go to the doctor and see why your hormone levels would cause this. Oh, and one more worry: ectopic pregnancies sometimes do not prompt the body to start producing the hormone that over the counter pregnancy tests measure, so you may get a false negative but still have an "extrauterine pregnancy."

Hi, I'm 34 an use condoms with my husband. I am so glad that people are talking about this! MY periods are always very normal and timely. I had a piece of tissue pass a few days ago after horrible cramps that looked like the skin of a plumb and was about the size of a silver dollar. It TOTALLY freaked me out because I had never seen anything like that before in my menstrual flow. I feel much better now about it since it seems to be happening to many other women as well as me. I was thinking of all kinds of nightmarish things like cancer after doing some reading online. This discussion has made me feel much better. Thanks!

Hi There. I went back onto Yasmin 3 weeks ago after being off any BCP for 8 months. Yesterday, thick whitish lumps of tissue passed out of me - had some pain but not much.

I saved the specimen in a sterile glass bottle, refridgerated it overnight (gross, I know), and took it to my gynae today

She was very pleased to be able to have the tissue tested by the lab. Results will be out in 2 days

She says it could be one of two things:

1 - Failed pregnancy or ectopic pregnancy
2 - Delayed period and crazy hormones due to starting Yasmin again

She did a sonar and physical exam but she says it does not look like a failed pregnancy because there is no evidence of a "pregnant uterus" or any tissue residue in the uterus.

She did a pregnancy blood test to be sure.

I will come back and let you know what the lab results were.

Thanks to all on this forum!! It helped to read about similiar experiences.

Hi Its me again - Just wanted to come back and let people know what the lab results were

My gynae called yesterday to say that the tissue I passed had been tested

They found that it was a Uterine Polyp - a small growth that grows off the stalk from your uterus (wall)

Its related to Estrogen and is common when people are not on the Pill nor any other hormone treatment

She thinks it fell off because I started taking the Pill again - hormone related

It usually occurs in women who are between 40 and 50 yrs old (I'm 29!!!)

It is visible on a scan if its still growing inside - In that case they put an instrument up and into your uterus and snip it off.

Hope this information helps those who are not sure.

If this happens to you please get an internal scan done at your Gynae ASAP and save the speciment!! in a clean jar (keep it refridgerated) because they also need to test it for cancer cells.

My gynae said that it I should have regular scans when I'm off the pill again to see if polyps are a recurring problem for me - can affect fertility etc

Good Luck everyone!!!

I had the same thing happen to me this morning along with severe cramping and bleeding it was the worst pain i've ever experience. When i saw the tissue i looked it up at and found this answer: "It's the lining of your uterus shedding during menstruation. This is typical"
Hope that helps put everyones minds at ease :-) [/url]
