I had that problem in the past. When I was 14 I was at school and suddenly got hot and started getting cramps. I stood up and tried to walk but my feet felt like cement blocks and I fainted. I ended up getting my period and my mother brought me home. I went to the bathroom and got up and before I flushed I spied a fleshy looking pinkish mass in the toilet. I studied it and my first thought was that I miscarried. Yes I was sexually active at that time and got scared so didn't tell my mother about it. Plus my period has always been irregular and I was like a month late.

I'm 18 now and I haven't seen that fleshy mass during my period since then. But I also don't pay attention to it often, so it is possible that it has happened and I just didn't see it. My period is usually very heavy and very very painful. Like right now I'm in bed loaded up on generic menstrual relief pills and trying not to move too much so the pain doesn't come back in full force.

I'm relived to know that it was probably not a miscarriage and feel dumb that I didn't fish it out and show my mother then we could have done something about it.

I have this happen to me occasionally. I am 34 have a history of endometriois. My Dr. had recommended that I take my birth control straight through for 3 months so that I have less periods during the year. This is when I began noticing the large discharge of tissue. It is very startling. My mind started racing coming up with all sorts of ideas of what this could be. In speaking with my Dr. this is can commonly happen when the body is shedding the lining of the uterus but is more common when you are using the pill and especially when you are reducing the number of periods you experience during the year.

However what is not normal is the excessive pain that many people on this board are reporting. I would always recommend being honest with your Dr. about the amount of pain you are experiencing. I experienced severe pain for years but didn't bring it up because it only occurred once a month for a period of 1-3 hours. It turned out that I had endometreosis which was once treated my pain has decreased significantly.

So I just had this happen to me for the first time this morning & was pretty freaked out about it. My first thoughts were miscarriage, or cancer haha. This thread has helped calm me down a lot, I'm not really worried anymore. I will still be going to the gyno though because it seems like most women who have this occur are starting new bc, or doing something of that sort to change their hormone levels. This is not the case with me. I am 21 years old & I have not been on bc for about a year but I am sexually active & my per was 15 days late this month. I was really starting to think I was pregnant when my period finally came. I had pretty bad cramps, had to go home early from work, but I took midol & they went away. This usually happens when my period is late so I thought nothing of it. Then this morning I had the tissue... Most of these women describe strings of tissue, but one described more of a pouch with darker ends, which is exactly what I had. It was definately tissue, similar to chicken skin I suppose... but much thinner. I'm still a little worried because this is the first time the tissue incident has happened to me, & like I said I haven't done anything different, no birth control. So I'm a little worried a may have endometriosis (however you spell that) or that it was a miscarriage... If I learn anything new I will post. But in the mean time, if anyone sees this & has answers, your input would be much appreciated!

This always happens especially right after I get back on birth control. I also think it causes some of my cramps. It really freaked me out the first time and I'm definitely glad to hear it's relatively common.

Hey all- I'm actually a doctor, 33yrs, on the combined oral contraceptive (in a relationship), never been pregnant, and I too freaked out when I passed a lump of flesh associated with excruciating pain, during my period. So, I actually kept the piece of flesh (I'm a doctor, don't find it too gross ;) ) and had it analyzed. Here's the results:

"grey and light tan sheet of membranous tissue (65x55mm). Sections show a cast of decidualised tissue with sparse embedded simple glandular structures. reliable distinction between pregnancy related decidua and progestogen induced decidual reaction is not possible however pseudodecidual reaction is favoured. gestational elements are not recognised. no evidence of cytological atypia or malignancy. DIAGNOSIS: Pseudodecidual Cast"

Here's a website that describes this as one of the consequences of the pill: "the stroma can be plump due to progestational effect, but can sometimes have a pseudodecidual reaction so florrid that it resembles true decidua & can slough as a cast ("membranous dysmenorrhea")"

Hope that puts some of your minds at rest!! It put mine at rest ;) emily

This happened to me, but I'm sure it was the result of a miscarriage. I had a faint positive for a couple days, and the test never showed up darker. I began to spot... then it stopped. I took another test and the positive was even fainter. I started my 'period' a couple days later. I bled normally at first, then the day this happen I experienced really sharp pain, with nausea and a headache. Took the tampon out and had a weird fleshy thing on it. I wasn't very far along, and the bleeding is almost gone now, so I'm sure it was a complete miscarriage, probably wouldn't have noticed if I had waited to be late for a whole week.

I'm so glad I came across this thread...just today the same thing happened to me. I started taking Jolessa (generic Seasonale or Seasonique) about two months ago. Last week I started breakthrough bleeding and it went on for several days. I was annoyed, so I decided that rather than wait 5 more weeks until my allotted period week, that I would skip this week's pills instead and have a period. I figured that would help get rid of the breakthrough bleeding (I know, you shouldn't fool with your BCP and I don't recommend it to anyone). But all the pills are the same amount of hormone and my husband is gone for three months, so I figured what's the harm? Anyway, today all of a sudden I had these terrible cramps. And I mean terrible. They took my legs right out from under me and I crumpled to the floor in the bathroom before I knew what was happening. It was horrible, but only lasted a minute or two - thank God for that. Then I passed this large fleshy clump. It was gross but I was really worried. I know it's not possible but I thought my whole uterus had fallen out! I figured it was just a large piece of uterine tissue, but in case I had internal bleeding or had had a miscarriage, I saved it in a bag and went to my nearest urgent care center. The took a pregnancy test which came out negative. The doctor said she's never seen a clot that large (I guess it's about two inches by one inch, triangular shaped, light pink, totally gross). I have to try to schedule a GYN visit ASAP. The doc said they would likely want to do a sonogram. I will try to schedule that for tomorrow if they can fit me in I guess, but it sounds like everything will look normal, from what other posts have said. I will come back to let everyone else know. Should I stop taking the pill completely? I will ask the GYN. It really shook me up, though. But I'm glad other people have come on to say that the same thing happened to them.

I just had this happen today it really scared me. I just got on the pill not even a month ago and got my period on time. At first my cycle was light wich was fine cuz it was the reason I got on the pill in the first place, but the last few days its gotten heavier like it used to and I've been having bad abdominal pain. This morning there were large chunks that looked like chicken skin as someone els here had described. I tried looking around on line, but couldn't find any info on why this is happening. I know its not a miss carrige because I'm not sexually active. Can someone tell me whats going on?

This just happened to me today.... Basically, I was on Tricyclen-lo for 6 months, went off the pill for four months, making my periods irregular (main reason for me going on the pill in the first place). Last month I started the pill again, this time using Tricyclen. I was a week late for my period, and figured I probably wouldn't get it, and just started taking the pill this month. Out of nowhere, I got the WORST cramps I've ever had, and about two hours after I got my period, I passed a large triangular sac of skin, that looked to be about the size of my uterus and about 1cm thick. It wasn't very bloody at all, just tissuey, and the cramps died down after that. Like a few other people posting in this, I think it was just two months worth of lining built up, and its thickness just caused it all to come out at once. It's weird that there aren't any more resources about this... but I'm sure 95% of the time, this isn't a problem. Anyways, I feel fine now and I'm not too worried. We'll see what happens next month, lol.

Hi everyone! I just had that same experinece this morning with discovering this pinkish grayish tissue when having my bath. It was very strange to me, decause I have never had that before. just started back on the pill for three months and did not have a period five days short of three months. I have endo and was placed on this pill to releive the awrful pains I experience as a result. I decided to keep my tissue to show my doctor and if there is need to test it. I prayer it is nothing serious. I am a little less worried knowing that it is something that seem to be common among so many of us. I too hope there is a doctor who can shine some light on this topic.

Hi everyone!

I wish I found this post earlier. I had a very similar situation happen about a week ago. I had the worst cramps I can ever remember having. When I went to change my tampon I found a huge (about 3in x 2in) piece of tissue that looked like chicken skin. I had never seen such a thing! I was quite worried! I picked it up (a little bloody) and played with it in my fingers to understand the texture and even smelled it since I know foul smells is something to worry about ... but it didnt smell like anything. I put the tissue sample in a sandwich bag and brought it over to my womens clinic. My Dr., who I am quite unhappy with, asked me if I stuck anything up there (my va-j-j) b/c she said it looked like tissue. I said, ... what, nose tissue? Your crazy! It looks like chicken skin! OMG.

Anyway, the test results came back as Decidualized tissue. You are all pretty correct. It is the shedding of the uterus. She did have me take a blood pregnancy test to make sure that there were no dead babies (well, she said "not viable") babies in there....like you said above .. a fallopian tube or those other places where a pregnancy can happen but not be able to live. I havent gotten the test results from that yet. I personally do not feel it was a miscarriage. I have never been pregnant so I cant be sure, but being on the pill and not having that much sex I highly doubt it.

BTW, speaking of the pill, I am on Seasonique ... which is the 3-month BC pill ... so I think that it was just build up. It is obviously not the most natural thing to not have your period for 3 months.

I hope this helps!

Hi. I am 39 years old. I am having my menstural cycle this week and the oddest thing happened that has never happened to me in all my years of having periods. The other night when i went to the bathroom, after i wiped this big gob of something was on the tissue. It had only a little blood on it not much but it really disturbed me because it looked like it was a piece of an internal organ. It was bout the size of a fifity cent piece. I dont think it was a miscarriage because my tubes have been tired for 17 years now. Ive always clotted during my cycles but the clots were always red. This was a light yellow color almost an off white color.

Hi, I'm 21 years old and just started taking Jolessa the generic form of seasonic 3 months ago on this birth control i only get my period every three months. i got my first period on this birth control a few days ago and i had really bad cramps and when i woke up the next morning i had a mass of like skin or tissue in my pad naturally i freaked out and i called my Gynecologist. he told me not to worry and that if i had break through bleeding on my next box of birth control i should give him a call back. he didn't really give me a reason why this happens but hearing from a doctor not to worry about this really calmed my nerves. i worry about everything and i thought this was going to be something really bad. I'm glad my doctor could help me and i hope i helped some of everyones nerves about this. i wold still recommend to call your doctor because everyone is different but don't freak out!

Im really glad I found this forum, this terrified me last night, but from reading this, it seems common from the use of yasmin and depo?. Might be worth mentioning to doctors that the yasmin could be causing it?
Awaiting test results, my doctor was not concerned though.
