I'm in my 11TH week now.
I'm still on the pads using 1 a day. I still have a few little squirts/drops that I feel from stress incontinence during the day but it's not enough to change the pad. The squirts/drops happen for no reason at all. The blood has almost completely gone I rarely see any. I use to see it mostly after I took my blood thinner in the AM and PM. My bowel movements are still messed up sometimes I strain and sometimes not. I still see a little blood after straining.
I had a little set back about a week ago. One night I woke up about 3AM and I had pissed all over myself. I don't know if the wetness woke me up or the fact that I had to pee because I went to the bath room and my bladder was still full. So I went back to wearing the diapers at night. So far it has not happened again.
Things have changed a lot since the surgery but the last 2 weeks seem about the same
I hope you keep improving.
Philip
Thank you for your detailed answer of your follow up with Dr. Miller. You are always so helpful with your answers.
I hope your Psa test in November will stay the same or improve. You had a negative biopsy before you had the HoLEP so you should be okey.
I have not had any biopsy since 2003 so I take a chance with there being a 10-15% chance of cancer.according to my previous Psa tests.
O well I will find out after the surgery.
I am 8 days from my surgery, will have it on the 14th of March.
Are you going to use Dr. Miller as your Urologist at your yearly examination?
Dr. Millers office has already scheduled me for the 6-week follow up. I will drive down to nashville on my follow up, it is only 8 hour drive.
Well just got back from seeing Dr. Das. He said he knew as he was injecting the bulking agent several weeks ago that he didn't think that it would take. He said when he went in with the scope to do that that everything looks great and clear however not fully healed yet. As the tissue heals its less responsive to absorbing collagen. It was a try.
Basically he wants to give it more time. He indicated my bladder sphincter is working fine, just not sealing up properly upon closure. Kegels Kegels Kegels was his suggestion. His nurse practitioner Darlene came in to discuss how to do the exercises and I will increase my frequency. I will go back in two months and at that point if we need to do something else we will address it then.
I have read some other's accounts on this board about full recovery taking 6 months or so, including incontinence issues. I will work harder at the Kegels and push forward. I am hopeful time will be my friend!
I would like to have Dr. Miller as my urologist (despite the distance) since I do not have much faith in my hometown urologist. However, I don't know if she will take me on regarding non-surgical issues.
Since I am now familiar with the process at Vanderbilt, feel free to contact me anytime before, during, or after your hospital stay if you have questions. I will try to stay on top of my email around that date.
Best of luck to you,
On the 31st. Dr. Krambeck sent a male student in to talk to me about the surgery. Well the surgery went well I was in surgery for 1 1/2 hours(actual surgical time was 1hour), the predicted time was 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours. I was moved to a patient room about 1:00 PM They put a catheter in me that allowed fluid to enter my bladder and then drain out into a bag. It was large and uncomfortable. About 8:30 pm I found a position where I was comfortable. I sure didn’t get much sleep. In addition I had to have an antibiotic via IV. That took four hours of drip. It was repeated in the early morning.
Check out day! About 4:00 AM the nurse removed my catheter, what a relief. I was able to urinate and I was cleared to go home. My wife drove me home. I was unpacked and settled in by 1:30 pm. After being tied down for a couple of days I wanted to get out so I drove church to get our mail, a friend held it for us. Then to the drug store to pick up supplies. While there I became a little light headed, guess I had lost a lot of blood or maybe it a side effect of the anesthesia. By bed time I had gone through four or five heavy duty pads. In addition I made a change during the night. I noted that on occasion when I used the toilet I had a strong stream. I did pass some clots but Dr. Krambeck's nurse said that was normal.
By the second day home I was doing better. Whenever I sit down I know that I have had surgery. I can’t say it is painful but I felt tender in the perineum. By that evening it was much less sensitive to sit down. The next Dr. Krambeck’s nurse call and reported that my pathology report showed negative for cancer. That was a blessing since I just went through a colectomy to remove colon cancer. I used a total of four pads including the overnight one that was not very damp.
By about Feb. 5 my bleeding had stopped. By Feb. 28 I am down to about two pads; one during the day and a lighter pad for overnight. I found that because I had lost 30 pounds since October 2017 so I downsized my undershorts so the pad is held snugly to my body. The exception to the two pads is when I have extra activity. I will be returning to the gym soon. This will be another challenge.
It is still unsettling to be dripping when walking or just standing even though I am doing the Kegel exercises.
It is about 5 weeks since my surgery. I have returned to the gym. I don’t drink much before I go to the gym. I make sure to empty my bladder before I leave for the gym and when just before I start exercising. Since I have been out of the gym for 3 months the workouts a very light. They are usually 20 minutes of cardio and one or two machines. I am staying away from free weights and standing exercises that would put excessive pressure on my body. I will add to the workout routine slowly.
The incontinence seems to be the same for the last three weeks, two pads; one during the day and one at night. I do use a third one for the gym but I may be able to use that as my day pad.
I am flying out to Nashville tomorrow. I have read that many people had constipation after the HoLEP surgery. Does the hospital give you things for constipation? Or should I bring that with me?
No worries. Dr Miller will have you covered. She will give you Senekot the evening after surgery.
That said, if you tend to have problems along that line then have some of your own available (we did - but I did not need it).
Also, be sure to drink enough fluids --- especially after the catheter comes out.
Good luck and don't worry. They are remarkably well organized (and that is from a critical care nurse).
I thought of one other thing. I suggest you carry your prescriptions (if you have any) with you when you go to the hospital. I was very surprised that they did not prescribe my usual home medications for me while I was in the hospital. Perhaps it was just a one time oversight. However, I was glad that I had my own supply to take on my own schedule.
I had my Holep surgery, everything went great. No pain at all. Was able to urinate as soon they took off the catheter. The first day, I had leakage. Today has been very little leakage, it has improved since yesterday.
I am very happy with the Holep surgery and with Dr. Miller. She is a great surgeron.
I am planning for booking ticket for my 6 week checkup. How long time does the follow up visit take?
I plan to fly in and out the same day.

Hej Philip and everyone else on this website,
Today is one week since having HoLEP surgery at Vandebilt in Nashville. I am extreamly happy with the result. I have no pain, no incontinence. I have no blood in the urine any longer, I have been drinking at least 3 quarts of water every day, I think that helped with cleaning up blood from the urine.
To anybody thinking about having a HoLEP surgery, I would recomend Dr. Miller at Vanderbilt.
I also got my pathology report back, no cancer, so I am quite happy right now , and also happy about being able to pee like a young man.
