Hi Blayneb,

Thank you for the response. I appreciate your input so I know what to do and expect. It is day #7 for me now. Had my Holep at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. Friday 3-23-18.

I think I am over drinking since I also have a small bladder. I also see blood during bowel movements and at the end of urination. I feel pain at the end of urination also.

I do not know how the stress and urge incontinence will play out for myself. I will have to look up Kegel exercises on the net and start. I guess, I will have to learn patience. I really did not know what to expect from Holep.

I thought they were only going to take the obstructing prostate material out but I think they took a lot out. My prostate was not very big but had bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and chronic prostatitis over the last couple of years which got on my nerves. Hope HOLEP does the trick. Once again thanks for the great advice. Ray

HI learner,

Thank you for your input. I am not doing keels but will look them up and do them. I think they will help out. I have both pain and bleeding at the end of urination. Don't know what causes that. I do not have any pain during urination. I did but it went away. I was lucky that I found a HOLep doctor in my Harrisburg, PA area. Doctor was John Knoedler who works out of Hershey Medical Center, Hershey PA. He is a fellow from the Mayo Clinic. As far as drinking water, I think you are right. I believe I am drinking too much of it. I already have a small bladder to begin with. I am going to reduce my intake starting today. I will see what that will do. I hope your recovery is going well. I will keep posting my experience here over time. Thanks again for the tips. Ray

Ray, I was told to drink at least the normal amount of water to help prevent clots. I am not on blood thinner but I take fish oil when taken in large doses can be a blood thinner.

I had my HoLEP at Indiana University on JAN 31. I am still using a pad but I have noticed that lately I only use one pad in a 24 hour period. For reference it is a TENA pad for moderate leakage.

Blayneb,

A 150 gram prostate must have given you huge problems. Mine was small and caused a lot of problems. I am going to cut down on my intake of liquids. Thanks. Ray

Hi Guest

Thanks for the tip on the fish oil. I already have some at home but was told not to take it for a week before surgery. I think I should start taking it again based on your recommendation. Thanks for the tip. Ray

Hi Guest

I also had problems urinating after they took the catheter out. Lots of blood. Continued for about 3 days and bleeding not so bad. Called doctor about things a few days ago and he said all side effects for normal for HOLEP. Thanks again. Ray

Hi Ray;

Yeah I was very tired of standing at a urinal for 10 minutes trying to pee (dealt with it for many years) but now I pee like a fire hose and empty in like 10 seconds! Plus, I go all night (6 to 7 hours) now without having to go. So all in all, though the incontinence and bleeding is a pain (and yes I still have some pelvic and peroneal pain after urination) it was well worth it to have HoLEP, and I just wait for the day sometime in the future (I am hoping in another month or 2) when the symptoms completely subside. I am quite glad I had this done, and eventually I am pretty sure you will to. All the best!

Hi Blayneb,

I still pass some clots here and there after one week. Also, burning with urination but not as bad as it used to be. I take my last antibiotic pill tomorrow. It just feels weird inside. Urethra feels hot and bladder neck feels hot. I suppose the prostate is still bruised up a lot too. It has only been 7 days since the surgery. I guess I got a ways to go. I am glad that HOLEP helped your symptoms a lot. Hopefully, all symptoms will go away soon. Thanks. Ray

Can you give me her email address. I’m also suffering from BPH and looking for a HoLEP procedure expert. Thank you. Ed.

For some strange reason this site does not allow users to post contact information.
However, you can find Dr Miller easily on the web --- either through her practice at Nashville, or through her page at Vanderbilt University (that is where I got her email address).
If you contact her in person via email she usually responds quickly and in detail.

If you don't have any luck let me know and we will try to work things out. She is definitely worth connecting with.

Posting my 4 month post surgery/catheter removal status which was yesterday 4/12. Blood has finally totally subsided. I no longer see blood either at the end of urination or during any bowel movement, even if I push hard (which I of course try to avoid). Urination continues to be great (fire-hose status) and I continue to sleep all night (6 to 7 hours) without the need to go. That is the good news. Now the bad: I continue to have incontinence. I do have marked improvement, but I continue to dribble and leak with any kind of forceful stress. This has been rather trying recently as I am in the process of selling our home and have had to do tons of box packing. lifting, carrying, etc.. which causes me to leak to an annoying extent. I am going through about 2 or 3 light duty CVS pads daily during this stretch. I'll normally change after my shower at night, sleep all night with the same pad, and then wear it until the early afternoon when I will change it. Then I go to my nighttime shower before I change. Sometimes I'll change a pad in between time if higher activity causes me to leak more heavily. I continue to do kegels multiple times a day, every day. I am really hoping I see significant improvement if not complete continence by the end of the 5th month. In the meantime, I am trying to stay as positive as possible, realizing I HAVE made significant progress in 4 months and continue to believe complete continence is only a matter of time. Any comments, words of encouragement or questions are welcome. My best to all.

Blayneb,
Don.1 here. I’m one week behind you. My 4th month also. I’m about the same as you with everything. I wear 1 pad a day without any problems and some days I think I could do without them. Some days I still have a little stress incontence where I will feel like a little drip or a tiny squirt comes out like a drip after you finish peeing. I seem to have those at odd times but not when I’m doing something stressful, they just happen. I hope one day I can get back to my boxers and everything is hanging loose. Lol.
Good luck with your recovery.

Hi Don, great news! Very happy for you. I'm definitely not confident I could go any time without a pad but I am hoping in another month (or less) that may be possible. I like you will dribble at unexpected times, but it is never a large amount, just a small dribble or drip. I also forgot to mention that my urge incontinence has also improved. I can hold when I have the urge to go longer than I used to (though not anywhere normal yet), so incidental improvement there will hopefully continue. All the best to you, and looking forward to the day (sooner I hope) when we both will be 100% continent!

Guys,

I am now 3 weeks away from my HOLEP surgery. Urine clear, no blood and no great pain during entire urination. However, the only thing I still suffer from is pain at the end of urination. At the very end of urination, I get pain as the bladder empties out the last of the urine. I think it is coming from the bladder outlet sphincter and/or top of urethra. Maybe both have been damaged by the surgery. Also, during the day, I have slight pain there which causes a feeling that I have to urinate when, in fact, I really do not have to. Is this normal? How long does this last? Where is this pain coming from? Thanks, Ray

Hi Ray,

For me this was very normal. I wish my symptoms were as mild as you seem to be experiencing, but were all different. I had general pelvic pain at the end of urination for months as well as blood into my 3rd month. HoLEP is major surgery and will take time to resolve but I think you should be encouraged that your symptoms seem relatively mild. All good news. All the best. Btw this is Blayneb I think I forgot to log in.
