Ray: I have read of numerous such complaints by different people on this web page. So I would say it is a Normal occurrence. However, I did not experience it so I don't know anymore about it.

Hi, thanks for your sharing, this is really helping !!!

I am hoping to schedule a surgery with Dr. Humphreys as well. May I ask did you see him in ur first appointment ? Did they do urodynamic testing, MRI, CT-scan in either of your pre-surgical appointments ?

Would much appreciate the input. Thank you so much :) And hope all well

Hi, do you meet with Dr. Humphreys in the first appointment ? I thought it would be a nurse practitioner

Hi Philip,

Yes, I hope it is a normal occurrence. I guess I am impatient but it was major surgery even though they play that down a bit.

Hey. Just wondering have you had the surgery yet ? If possible, would you mind sharing what they did for your pre-op evaluation, particularly what they did before u were put on the schedule for surgery

Is the flow study just you pee in the measuring cup or it's a probe inserted into your penis ?

Flow Study: You are requested to arrive with a full bladder. You then void into a bucket type device that measures your flow rate, volume, and interruptions. After each flow study a bladder ultrasound is usually done to check the residual urine volume in the bladder.

Hej Philip,
How are you doing?
I had my 6-week HoLEP post op.last week. the results was kind of mixed. The not so good was that I had 110 ml left in the bladder after the flow test.
The positive part was that my PSA level was down to 0.28 , which I am very happy about.
Everything else is good, never had incontinience but the first couple days, and only blood in the urine for the first 5 days. So I am very happy about my HoLEP surgery.
I still have to go up one time in the night most of the time, sometimes I make it the whole night, without going up to pee.I wish there were a way to train the bladder to not send the signal to the brain to wake up.

Who was your surgeon? Was your surgeon Dr. Miller at Vanderbilt?

Yes, I would recommend her if you consider HoLEP surgery.

Hello Sunshine:

I am well. Thank you for asking. I have basically few, if any issues post-HoLEP surgery. I thank both Dr Miller for that, and also the fact that I did not wait forever before having the procedure done.

Congratulations on your PSA!! Mine was 2.2 which is within acceptable range but higher than expected post HoLEP and therefore causes me some concern.

I believe your slightly high post void residual (and this is purely my opinion) may be due to the fact that you lived with high bladder volumes for quite some time before having the surgery. Hence, the bladder may have lost some of its elasticity and tone (just my thinking). I believe that with time, Kegel exercises, bladder exercises, and lower abdominal exercises that you will regain some of what you once had when you were younger. Also, I believe that standing to void helps empty the bladder completely, and also consciously attempting to relax and let things drain post void is also helpful (before you rush on your way). Did you ask Dr Miller about the issue?

My only issues are that occasionally, if I am in a hurry post void (and do not allow full drainage), I will get a squirt of urine once I think I am done and tucked away. But, this is actually rare. I am adjusting to the lack of climax sensation which happens often during intercourse and I am thankful that I am able to carry on with my sex life.

When all is said and done, I have minimal post surgery issues and I think that HoLEP surgery with Dr. Miller is one of the best choices that I have made in my life.

Hej Philip
Yes I do think that mine bladder have lost some elasticity. I had also been drinking a lot of water before the uroflow test, and there were some time between that test and the post void residual.
Dr Miller said that could have caused the high amount, she also said it would get better with time.
How do you do bladder exercises? I know how to do kegels, but I never did it very much since I didn't have incontinience.
What was the difference between your PSA test at Vandebilt and the PSA ZRT test?
I got my result back today from ZRT it said only that it was less than

Sunshine:

Post flow study they also took a long time before doing my residual. At the time I thought it was rather sloppy since I had also been drinking a lot of water. So, there is you explanation for the slightly elevated residual. No worries.

My PSA at Vanderbilt was 2.29 and the test kit was 2.0 --- so pretty much the same. Don't know why you are having problems posting.

As far as exercises: I do Kegels; traditional lower abdominal exercises; and bladder exercises of my own design (such as trying to squeeze out a bit more post void; and increasing the flow rate when voiding; etc).

When all is said and done I think we are both pretty well fixed up and good for another round. I am glad my recommendations resulted in a positive outcome for you.
