My father had this. He eventually over the course of his life underwent several kinds of treatments, but ended up having two spinal fusion surgeries. He was able to get relief at that point from many of his problems. My son is also having problems, and has just had an MRI, and will likely have to see a neurosurgeon this month.

I too do yoga, have been since 16. Found out I had an L6 when I was 18 because a chiropractor student offered to give me free adjustments; didn't have any pain or anything. He said that was probably because of the yoga, that most people with a L6 have pain. I'm still teaching at 33 and the students who come in with an L6 get major relief. If they stop, they always come back because the pain comes back and nothing else helps, chiropractic, massage, injections, etc. I don't get bodywork. All I do is yoga. I definitely think there is something to the balanced flexibility and stability training that we do.

I had back pain from the age of 18, I visited the hospital for years while they tried different treatments, none of which helped. I finally had a CAT scan when I was about 38. I had sciatic pain down my left leg and numbness most of the time. They finally operated at the age of 38 and removed lots of extra bone from one vertebra.

I only found out that I had the extra vertebra years letter when I was experiencing more pain.

I am now 69 and have learnt how to 'manage' my back. It is mostly OK but let's me know if I have overdone it.

Be reassured that there is life after back pain!

I have half of an L6 which is wedge shaped causing scoliosis to the left which then pinches my sciatic nerve on right side to be pinched causing severe sciatica. Every doctor I saw said I should deal with the pain as long as I can and I'm to that point. Problem is I'm 34 and can't afford to be out of work for a year recovery. Guess I'm gonna "deal with it".

Same story here as others...went to the chiro for lower back and neck pain, x-ray revealed extra vertebra (L6). Some adjustments help if they stretch the ligaments, but others make the problem worse. The chiro showed me some excellent stretches to perform every day (just like stretches for runners--grab an ankle and pull each foot up behind, pull each knee up to the ribs in front, slowly lean over and reach for toes). Resting flat on a hard floor and slowly raising and lowering legs and twisting spine helps too. I found a great seat cushion that goes everywhere with me (look for Augymer sciatic cushion), along with a mesh back support, even on planes (it doesn't count towards carryon luggage restrictions because I sit on it). Heat feels wonderful, and I often sleep on a heating pad. But recently I started taking gelatin every day, and this has done more to decrease my neck, back, and leg pain than anything else. Best wishes to all who suffer the extra vertebra!

I have a 6th vertebrae that has fused to my right hip. My chiro found it on an X-ray a little over a year ago, when I was 38. I've had hip/back/sciatic pain for years... the sciatica during my last pregnancy (at age 27) was debilitating - I couldn't get on & off the toilet or out of bed without assistance.

A few things help me: regular chiro adjustments, massage therapy when I can afford it, pelvic floor physical therapy, stretching, & the biggest help: a shoe lift. My chiro fitted me with a slim (1/4" tall) shoe lift inserted into my athletic shoes, on the side opposite the fused vertebrae, & it has helped tremendously. If I wear any shoes without a lift, the pain is almost instant upon standing.

I have an extra lumbar. I am a registered nurse. I have had 3 back surgeries. I am rh negative.

Yes, I new I was rh negative but I didn't know about the extra lumbar until just ONE of many radiology reports mentioned it. JUST ONE. I find that odd. I have had 3 back surgeries and countless xrays, MRI's, and CT myelogram. And only ONE report mentioned that i have 6 lumbar. Anyway, I'm a registered nurse. I ended up rupturing at the "L5-S1" (Which was actually at the L6-S1) TWICE. I blame myself because I returned to bedside care nursing on 12 hour shifts too quickly doing exactly what I had been doing in the first place that my back couldn't handle. But I too have read there is a connection with rh negative factor and the existence of an extra lumbar. I fit the description. I also have green eyes. But I have always had higher than average heart rate and my basal temp can be almost 99 degrees so I don't fit the usual description there. I also have hypertension which is the opposite of what some claim to be more common with rh negative factor. Eczema asthma and other allergy and auto immune symptoms run high with our side. Don't know if that is a factor or not.

Have have been dealing with this for quite some time I have had multiple steroid injections in my spine medications pass to me that only made me sick or worse been through many doctors chiropractors and rheumatologist and had found out that I have a 6 vertebrae a lot of my readings on it say that it doesn't cause pain and some people do say that in my experience it causes a lot of pain the doctors couldn't pinpoint where my pain was coming from until they found this. I'm currently off all my medication for the last 2 years and have been in the medical marijuana program that is turned my life around and my health I highly recommend it and for those who don't want to smoke there are many other options besides that put your health before anything else.

I have the 6th vertebrae as well. Unfortunately, I do have problems. I was told I have fusion and experience low back pain that can be set off by just sitting or twisting. I have also found trouble sleeping because I apparently am compensating for this and it in turn makes my hips ache...this really causes problem when I try to sleep. I've tried a chiropractor and didn't find it helpful. I went for a massage and it actually caused severe pain in the days following. Any suggestions?

I as well have a 6th lower lumbar vertebrae.

I have all the above mentioned symptoms and I was just diagnosed with having a 6th vertebra. It is very painful. I've been dealing with this pain for almost 4 years. I will be having a joint injection to diffuse the pain til I have the surgery to remove the bone. I have no choice, because I don't want to end up with nerve damage.
