You definitely need to be patient. The spots do get more noticeable, which sounds like a bad thing, but that's just them getting pushed closer to the surface. I've already peeled one layer of skin off after 2 weeks of usage, and they're closer than ever now. I'm hoping in another 2 weeks I'll get some more peeling, then I'll exfoliate to get rid of these bastards

has anyone tried tretinoin cream or gel? I hear that's so far the most successful treatment for fordyce spots, they control the sebaceous glands and stop too much sebum from being produced and cause your lips to peel. Sounds like jojoba oil does the same thing, not sure if its more effective or less effective than tretinoin though. I know tretinoin takes months before it gets rid of all your spots,. maybe thats the case for jojoba as well. I think ill try both

I hear tretinoin can be very effective, and it's similar to Jojoba Oil in what it does. The only thing is that it's a prescription medication with a couple of side effects. People say it gets rid of their fordyce spots "over time", so it's probably a matter of months rather than weeks or days. So it's probably the same case for jojoba oil as well. The fact that I've noticed some improvement means I'm on the right track, though the finish line may be a couple months away. I'm going to stick with this until August or so, and if I'm not happy with the results I'll give tretinoin a shot.

this is my 10 day of using jojoba oil..when i woke up.. i used scrub invigorating..i am very disappointed..not one spot came off..but i have notice that the spots are more noticeable. i read on your earlier post tedmosby83 that on your 10th day..your lips just peeled and 10 spots came out without using any exfoliates..well not with me..my lips are not peeling at all..just wondering..why would jojoba oil make you lips peel..i've notice the oil is like capstick and keeps my lips from chapping..so how can it peel..anyways..im still going to using it for a while and keep you guys posted... paul

Exfoliating won't solve the problem. The main problem is too much sebum production, so even if you manage to get rid of the spots using an exfoliant or a chemical peel, the spots are just going to come right back.
You have to get to the root of the problem to eliminate it, otherwise the effort is futile. You need to somehow stop your body from producing too much sebum, and products like tretinoin cream or jojoba oil can certainly help with this in the long run, but you still need to get to the root of what causes too much sebum production in the first place.
So I have a question for all of you, do most of you have other skin conditions such as acne, blemishes, eczema, or psoriasis? If so, they exist for the same reason the fordyce spots exist. They're all external manifestations of an internal condition, and unless you treat the internal condition, your skin/lip problems are immortal. Usually the root of the problem has to do with your general health. It could be a vitamin/mineral deficiency, dehydration, poor sleeping habits, not enough exercise, stress, or a combination of some or all of those.
I would recommend taking a potent multivitamin (one that will hit most of the recommended daily intake values), drinking plenty of bottled or filtered water, sleeping 8 hours a day, and exercising 3-4 times a week. By all means, use jojoba oil. It's the safest and probably the most effective lip conditioner on the market. But you need to get to the root of the problem in addition to that. I'm convinced that the root of my problem is a zinc deficiency, because like many people I eat a very small amount of foods rich in zinc.
Good luck to all!

I should also mention which vitamins/minerals you all need to focus on for your fordyce spots and other skin problems. Make sure you hit all of the recommended values for these vitamins (in fact you should probably exceed them), but for the minerals try to stay as close to the RDIs as you can.
Vitamin A - strengthens the protective tissue of the skin and prevents acne and other skin problems. It helps reduce sebum production. This vitamin is essential for the maintenance and repair of the tissue which the skin and mucous membranes are made of. It is also a powerful antioxidant needed to rid your body of toxins. Only need to eat 10 baby carrots to hit your RDI.
Vitamin B Complex - The B vitamins help to maintain healthy skin tone. They are also helpful in relieving anxiety and stress. Stress can be a major player in causing skin problems. The B vitamins should always be taken together. The vitamins in the B complex are Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Pyridoxine and Cyanocobalamin. Each one of these vitamins has a specific role in promoting healthy skin, as well as overall health. You'll need to get your RDIs from a multivitamin.
Vitamin E - an antioxidant that enhances healing and tissue repair. It prevents cell damage by inhibiting the oxidation of lipids (fats) and the formation of free radicals. A powerhouse for the skin, you'll need to get your RDI from a multivitamin unless you're a sunflower seed lover.
Chromium - aids in reducing infections of the skin. One of the most underrated minerals, you can get part of the RDI from a multi, but there are many good food sources such as broccoli, apples, potatoes, lettuce, beef, and turkey. Shoot for 120 mcg of chromium per day.
Zinc - aids in healing of the tissues and helps prevent scarring. It helps prevent acne and fordyce spots by regulating the activity of the oil glands. Zinc promotes a healthy immune system and the healing of wounds. It is also an antioxidant which helps to fight and prevent the formation of free radicals. It is known as a potent sebum inhibitor, so this mineral is essential for all of us. Again, you'll need to get most of your RDI from a multivitamin, and there are also good food sources such as beef, lamb, chicken legs, and pumpkin seeds. Shoot for 12-15 mg of zinc per day.

i take centrum AtoZinc multivitamins. im pretty much in the same boat as everyone. been on jojoba oil for 8 days now. exfoiliated today but no help. lips feel much smoother but spots are still there :-(

If you're taking Centrum vitamins, make sure you're taking Centrum Forte or Centrum Advantage, not the regular ones. Make sure any multi you take has 7-8 mg of zinc. Zinc and Vitamin A are by far the two most potent sebum inhibitors, and most multis don't have enough of either.
Of course you still need to do the other things, getting enough sleep and exercise, eating a healthy balanced diet, and drinking plenty of water. If you're doing all of that AND you're getting enough zinc and Vitamin A AND you're using jojoba or tretinoin and you still see no improvement after 1-2 months, then there's nothing you can do really.
