I'm not a medical professional, and each case is obviously going to be different for the individual, but my understanding is that if your mucous/snot is a dark yellow or brown colour, that points to a bacterial infection.
I do think that our world over prescribes medications for everything, but bacterial infections are not just more harmful, they're also bloody unpleasant. So, go and get antibiotics if your mucous is a dark colour and if it smells bad, that too points to a bacterial infection.
Many people on here are talking about the taste at the back of your throat of this foul-tasting mucous. That's a sign of a bad sinus infection whereby it drips down your oesophagus. Because it is bacteria-infused mucous it can actually do more harm if this is happening, leading to throat and/or stomach problems.
In Australia we have a different health system where we can go to some doctors for free, so I think it is common for us to buzz off to the doctor for a quick prescription; we're possibly less-discerning about it than Americans. But antibiotics do still have a place. They were never created to eradicate illness; they were made to assist the body when this was needed. The right dose of antibiotics should give your immune system the assistance it needs to fight the illness off, not do it for your immune system.
I currently have most if not all of the symptoms discussed on here. Acute sinusitis is horrendous. It is painful, debilitating, and manifestly unpleasant. Sometimes these things cannot be done alone, and can do further harm if not treated properly.
And it would be so great if people wouldn't troll one another on these forums. Considering we all come here looking for answers and to share out experiences, it's not necessary to bath-mouth one another just because we disagree. Whatever happened to 'if you can say anything nice, don't say anything at all'?

Sinus illness is not by any means uncommon. Given how many people suffer from it at once during certain times a year. 10% can add up to a substantial group of those suffering with bacterial or fungal infection. %10 of 100 people is not the same as %10 of 1000000.

Generally one's credit, is what you're a slave too.
Here in Il, they don't consider teeth, a good reason for help. Just an example.
I'm having this same problem.
Even when I put my head down, it smells foul.
Hope you got everything taken care of. I seen this was an older post.
