You all are killing me.

Hi, nurse here.
YES you need an antibiotic. There's a chance you could possibly ride it out and see the end of it after another week or so, but if you want it gone now you'll need an antibiotic. then there's always the chance that it (may) get worse, and if left untreated, turn into a blood infection and Sepsis (which can kill you if not treated at the hospital). All of you on the antibiotics cause resistant bacteria chain should know that it is when people treat viruses with antibiotics that won't do any good to help the person that cause this. Or when people don't finish their antibiotic all the way through and as directed. So go get an antibiotic, and finish it as prescribed. And don't listen to anyone who isn't in the medical field because frankly, they don't know what they are talking about.

Actually if the mucus has a file smell or taste it I verry unlikely the Dr would send him home. That is usualy a sign of a bad bacterial infection and could lead to phanomonia if not treated with antibiotics.

You DO NOT need a antibiotic for a sinus infection. That’s funny! Most the time they are just viral.

Not true... I am 50 years old and have 5 documented times that I been to the doctor for a bacterial infection only to be turned away. Each of the 5 times I went back to the same doctor 7 to 10 days later. Every time the doctor prescribed antibiotics and my symptoms abated within 2 days. I have learned when I get sick just to wait for 1 to 2 weeks before going to the doctor. Maybe something to do with the way my sinuses are formed. But please stop spouting off your generic off the cuff answers and do some critical thinking. You must be a doctor.

In the United States... is like "auto bankruptcy"
even with Insurance - if you (working class) go to a Doc.

Sooo... if I can Self Treat - I don't go broke!
Love these forums. At age 57 I've treated all my illnesses (and often know more than the medical staffs)... through research.

Save your money. Save it for jobless liberals in the US. Diagnose yourself!

Keep in mind, however... at times - you might be bled to death by having to participate.

I HATE DOCTORS.

You have no clue what your talking about yes it will clear up by its self regardless an CAN NOT spread to your brain the most it will do is drain into your lungs Not causing meningitis. Nothing can cause meningitis but meningitis

In rare cases, an untreated sinus infection can spread to the brain or to the tissue surrounding the brain. If the infection spreads to the tissue of the brain, then you are at risk for seizures, brain damage or even death. Bacterial meningitis and even a brain abscess can occur leading to hearing loss, stroke, permanent brain damage, and even death. I have to be REALLY careful, as I’ve already had two strokes, two craniotomies, and a previous septoplasty (chronic sinusitis). Right now I’m dealing with a sulpher smell after having undergone dental surgery and being on antibiotic prophylaxis. . . That’s why I am here. Stop giving medical advice without having proper knowledge.

I am having the same problems, but I have an autoimmune disorder that cause my salivary glands and tear ducts to not put out enough saliva or tears. The result is very thick green mucous that doesn’t drain but makes a big wad that I have to flush out. I have, over the years, taken a lot of antibiotics, but it’s just a never ending pattern: sinus infection, antibiotics, a brief reprieve, then it starts all over again. I had surgery in 2002 to cut out the turbinates that were pitted from sinus infections and that did the trick until 2 or 3 years ago. Now I have to flush my nose at least once a day with my Navage or NeilMed bottle. Sometimes it’s so
Clogged, it takes 2 or 3 treatments to get all the junk out. Like you, it has a foul smell and tastes like sulphur. This is the best advice I can give you. A clean nose is a happy nose!
